Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Celebrant: Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and,
that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through
Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
for ever and ever.
People: Amen.
THE FIRST READING Joel 2:23-32
Please be seated.
9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. Read by Robert Pahnke. Read by Tom Stork.
O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the LORD your God; for he has given the
early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early
and the later rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall
overflow with wine and oil. I will repay you for the years that the swarming locust
has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, my great army, which I sent
against you. You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the
LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never
again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I,
the LORD, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again be
put to shame. Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and
your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young
men shall see visions. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour
out my spirit. I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire
and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood,
before the great and terrible day of the LORD comes. Then everyone who calls on
the name of the LORD shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there
shall be those who escape, as the LORD has said, and among the survivors shall be
those whom the LORD calls.
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
4
(The 9:00 a.m. service continues with the hymn on page 5.)
PSALM 84:1-6 All sing the refrain after the choir, and where indicated.
1 How dear to me is your dwelling, O LORD of hosts!
My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. Refrain.
2 The sparrow has found her a house
and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young;
by the side of your altars, O LORD of hosts,
my King and my God. Refrain.
3 Happy are they who dwell in your house!
they will always be praising you.
4 Happy are the people whose strength is in you!
whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way. Refrain.
5 Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs,
for the early rains have covered it with pools of water.
6 They will climb from height to height,
and the God of gods will reveal himself in Zion. Refrain.
THE SECOND READING 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18
11:00 a.m.
Read by Clark Ervin.
I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From
now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who
have longed for his appearing. At my first defense no one came to my support, but
all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! But the Lord stood by me and
gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all
the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will
rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be
the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Reader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

HYMN 552 (stanzas 1 and 2) Fight the good fight
Sung by all, standing.
Words: John Samuel Bewley Monsell (1811-1875)
Music: Pentecost, William Boyd (1847-1928) Copyright: Reprinted under Onelicense.net # A-701275.
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
THE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 18:9-14
Jesus told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous
and regarded others with contempt: "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a
Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was
praying thus, `God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues,
adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my
income.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven,
but was beating his breast and saying, `God, be merciful to me, a sinner!' I tell you,
this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt
themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted."
Gospeller: The Gospel of the Lord.
People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

HYMN 552 (stanzas 3 and 4) Fight the good fight
Sung by all.
THE SERMON The Rev. Dr. Luis León
Please be seated.
THE NICENE CREED
Please stand.
Celebrant and People:
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only
Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came
down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from
the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose
again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated
at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the
Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the
Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We
acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. AMEN.

How lovely is thy dwelling place (from A German Requiem) Johannes Brahms
(1833-1897)
How lovely is thy dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! For my soul, it longeth, yea,
fainteth for the courts of the Lord; my soul and body crieth out, yea, for the living
God. O blest are they that dwell within thy house; they praise thy name evermore,
they praise thee for evermore!
HYMN 517 How lovely is thy dwelling-place

A PRAYER FOR STEWARDSHIP
Celebrant and People:
Gracious and everlasting God, the giver of all good gifts, you have blessed us
and our parish abundantly. Grant us the hope to dream and the courage to
live into our possibilities. Make us faithful stewards, both for the provision of
our necessities and for the relief of those who are in need. Bless the efforts of
our Annual Giving this year to extend the work of spiritual renewal in our
church and community of faith. Through Jesus Christ, who gave all of
himself, we offer this prayer. Amen.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Please remain standing.
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.
Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to
you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and
the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with
all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of
your Name:

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY LORD (S-130) Franz Peter Schubert
11
Music: From Deutsche Messe, Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828); arr. Richard Proulx (b. 1937)
Copyright: Reprinted under Onelicense.net # A-701275.
Please stand or kneel.
Celebrant: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and,
when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your
mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to
live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself in obedience to your
will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the
remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to
them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink
it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Celebrant and People:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Celebrant: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise
and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you
these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your
Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that
we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy,
and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your
eternal kingdom.
12
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and
for ever.
People: AMEN.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Celebrant and People:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead
us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!
Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ
died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
MUSIC AT THE COMMUNION
Anthem 9:00 a.m. 11:00 a.m. The Parish Choir The St. John’s Choir
A Prayer from South Africa James Whitbourn
(b. 1963)
Lord, help me to give myself when I am giving. Teach me to give without thought
of receiving and to receive without thought of giving. Teach me not to withhold or
to withdraw myself. Teach me to hoard nothing: love, money, time, possessions.
Make me ready to give even my life if it is required of me. And while I have it, use
it as an instrument of your peace. Amen.
-A prayer by Alan Paton
All are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us. Our tradition is to receive
both bread and wine, sharing in the common cup. Please assist the chalice bearer by
guiding the cup to your lips. You may also intinct by dipping the wafer into the
chalice. You may wish to receive the bread only. Receiving the bread only is a valid
and acceptable way to share in Holy Communion. After consuming the wafer,
simply cross your arms over your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive
the wine. Gluten-free wafers are available on request from the communion minister.
If you are feeling sick, please refrain from receiving the wine and be mindful of those near
you when passing the peace or shaking hands as you enter and exit the church.

YOU ARE INVITED TO AN EVENT
RECOGNIZING HISTORICALLY
BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
November 10, 2016
at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square
Public program is 9:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
and 1:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Every two years the Episcopal Church and its two historically
black affiliated educational institutions come together to
celebrate their historic relationship. The President, students,
faculty and staff of St. Augustine’s University are traveling
from Raleigh, North Carolina, and the President, students,
faculty and staff of Voorhees College are traveling from
Denmark, South Carolina, for the event. This provides an
opportunity for students to share with the public the reasons
why they chose to attend Historically Black institutions and
their challenges, opportunities, and dreams for the
future. The public also learns of the continuing value of
Black Educational institutions in the United States and in
particular those started by Episcopalians hundreds of years

TWO EASY WAYS TO HELP OTHERS • The empty casserole pans in the Parish House are waiting to
be filled with food for our partnership with So Others Might
Eat (S.O.M.E.). St. John’s is committed to sending food once
a month to S.O.M.E. to be served in a meal program for
homeless and low-income persons in D.C. Participation is
easy and flexible! Pick up an empty casserole pan in the
Parish House, fill it with a casserole, and drop it off in the
freezer near the dining room soda machine. A parishioner
picks up all the casseroles once a month and drops them off at
the meal site.
• When you travel, bring back unopened toiletry items for
homeless shelters. Place them in the basket in the connector
between the Church and the Parish House.
SING WITH THE PARISH CHOIR
The Parish Choir of St. John’s, a dedicated corps of volunteer
musicians who provide musical leadership for the 9:00 a.m.
Eucharist each Sunday morning, welcomes new members.
Midweek rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7:15 p.m.-
8:30 p.m., with sandwiches provided at 6:45 p.m. There is a
straightforward voice trial for admission, but the main
qualification is your interest in serving St. John’s in its music
program. Please be in touch with Michael Lodico at
Michael.Lodico@Stjohns-dc.org if you are interested in
singing with the Parish Choir or talking about the program.
PLANNING YOUR LEGACY
Is there a place in your estate planning for St. John’s? Often
people think that when they have children or other family
members that they want to provide a legacy to, they can’t also
decide to leave a financial legacy to other causes or
organizations that are important to them. Have you assessed
your “legacy” recently? Have you factored in any insurance
policies, real estate and investments that would be part of that
legacy? Could there be room to leave 5-10% to organizations
that you care about such as St. John’s? Each and every gift
that St. John’s receives makes a difference. Whether it’s
naming St. John’s in your will or trust or as a partial
beneficiary on a retirement plan, insurance policy or
annuity…your generosity will live on and might set a beautiful
example to your heirs as well. For more information or if
you have questions, please contact Lisa Kirchenbauer at
Lisa@OmegaWealthManagement.com.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION
As part of the PATH Act of 2015, Congress has permanently
reinstated the Qualified Charitable Distribution which allows
tax payers over 70 ½ to redirect up to $100,000 of their annual
Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their IRA
accounts (only) to a qualified charity. If you are making
contributions to St. John’s Annual Giving or Capital
Campaign, this could have a positive impact on your income
tax planning. You can direct some or all of your RMD to one
or more charities.
If you are interested in learning more, please contact Lisa
Kirchenbauer at Lisa@OmegaWealthManagement.com
and be sure to consult with your tax advisor to determine
the impact on your personal financial situation.
PASTORAL CARE AT ST. JOHN’S CHURCH
Praying for the sick and those in need is an important part of
our life together. We invite you to add yourself, family, or
friends to the parish prayer list. Other than birthdays,
anniversaries, and deaths, names added to the prayer list will
appear for four consecutive weeks. If you would like the name
to be on the prayer list for a shorter or longer period of time,
please let us know. We are going to begin listing in
parentheses the name of the person requesting prayers for
family and friends who are not members of the congregation.
To add a name to the prayer list, please contact the Rev.
Andy Olivo at andrew.olivo@stjohns-dc.org.

IF YOU ARE VISITING a warm welcome to St. John’s.
We are delighted to have you worship with us. Please let us know who you are and how we can best serve you
by filling out a “Welcome” card and leaving it in the offering plate or with an usher or greeter, and joining us for
the coffee hour following the service.
We welcome families with young children at our worship services. Children’s Worship Bulletins are available
from the ushers as you enter the nave. For parishioners and visitors alike, nursery care for children under age
three is provided on Sunday from 8:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The nursery is located next to the elevator on the
lower level of the Parish House. Take the elevator or stairs to the basement. We also offer Church School at
10:45 a.m. for children and youth from age three through tenth grade on the second floor of the Parish House.
All persons, including children, are invited to take part in the Holy Eucharist. Parents may decide if their
children receive the bread and/or wine. Children may instead signal their desire to be blessed by the priest at the
altar by crossing their arms across their chest.

Welcome!
AT ST. JOHN’S CHURCH, we believe Christ is calling us to be a renewed church in a changing world. Empowered by the Spirit of God, we respond to Jesus’ call as we deepen our bond with Christ through worship, become a community where all are accepted, and work together as laity and clergy to do God’s work in the world.
ST JOHN’S WAS ORGANIZED IN 1815 to serve as a parish church for Episcopalians residing in the
neighborhoods in the west end of the District of Columbia. Its cornerstone was laid on September 14, 1815, and it was consecrated on December 27, 1816. Beginning with James Madison, every person who has held the office of President of the United States has attended a service at the church. Several Presidents have been communicants. Thus, St. John’s is often referred to as the “Church of the Presidents.” Pew 54 is the President’s Pew. The architect of the church was Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who assisted in the rebuilding of the U.S. Capitol and the White House after the War of 1812. Twenty-five of the stained glass windows in St. John’s were designed and executed by artisans of the noted Lorin firm of Chartres, France.
BROCHURES DESCRIBING PARISH LIFE, the history of St. John’s, and the Episcopal denomination can be
found in the church entrance. If you are visiting, please fill out the visitor information card found at the end of each pew to enable us to welcome you personally into the life of our parish.
ST JOHN’S WEBSITE WWW.STJOHNS-DC.ORG has up-to-date information about the Church including the
