Parents and teachers are particularly skilled in giving orders!

When you order someone to do something you must know two things:

1. WHAT you want the person to do(in other words the VERB)

2. WHO you are ordering

the VERB always come FIRST in the imperative

Remember the 3 ways of saying ‘YOU’du (informal, singular) ihr (informal, plural)

Sie (formal, singular or plural)

The ‘du’ imperative:

is the ‘du’ form of the present tense verb

minus the SNAP –st ending:

Verbs with an infinitive ending in –den, -len, -tenkeep the final –e:

finde warte

Verbs with a vowel stem change in the ‘du’ form,

e.g. nehmen du nimmst

Verbs which add an umlaut in the ‘du’ form

sehen du siehst

keep this in the imperative:

sieh!

Lauf über die Planke!

The ‘ihr’ imperative:

is simply the ‘ihr’ form of the present tense verb

e.g. kommen ihr kommt

finden ihr findet

nehmen ihr nehmt

sehen ihr seht

fahren ihr fahrt

kommt!

fahrt!

The ‘Sie’ imperative:

is the ‘Sie’ form of the present tense verb

e.g. Sie kommen

Sie finden

Sie nehmen

Sie sehen

Sie fahren
