Next weekend will be “Commitment Sunday Weekend” within our parish. Parish life
depends on the shared time, treasure, and talent of the parishioners. The parish council
developed the “Commitment Sunday” form that is found in this weekend’s bulletin. The
council is hoping you will take it home this week and prayerfully consider ways you’d like
to be more involved within our parish. Next weekend, at each of the liturgies, a new copy of
the form will be passed out and time will be allowed to fill them out. This is for all
parishioners from 3rd grade through adulthood. Our parish has always thrived, and continues
to thrive through God’s goodness and the generous commitment of so many people. Lent is
the perfect opportunity to reflect on our involvement and recommit ourselves to our active
participation in parish life.

Thirst for God
This week is the 3rd Sunday of the Lent during which we are invited to reflect on the
Encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. As Jesus and his disciples were on
the way from Judea to Galilee they were passing through Samaria. Being tired of the
journey, Jesus sat on the ground by Jacob's well, while the disciples had gone out to the
city to buy food. As he was resting, a Samaritan woman came to draw water at the noon
time .Jesus asked for water from her. Jesus was thirsty and he had a deeper thirst. What
was his thirst? His thirst for this woman was a total conversion of faith and salvation.
His thirst for her was that she should be liberated from all of her sensual pleasures and
immoral life and she should have a total change to a new life in God. She needed to
thirst for the forgiveness of the Lord for all her past sins. She was desperately in need
of the savior to help her in this regard, because she lived a very bad life.
She was thirsting for a genuine relationship with God. She was a woman with a bad
reputation and everyone knew her past life. The Lord said that she had five husbands
and the current one, with whom she lived, was not her husband and she lived in sin.
Indeed she lost her peace, because of her immoral life. She was thirsting or longing for
forgiveness and a release from all of the chaos in her life. Jesus knew her real and
genuine thirst was for a change of life. After her encounter with Jesus she perceived
that real and genuine thirst for God and God experience only can satisfy her life, but not
the sensual pleasures of the flesh. Once she realized this thirst for God she became a
renewed person and witnessed this experience to other women and they all came to
know about Jesus.
In conclusion, the Samaritan woman was thirsty at the well. There are a lot of people
thirsty for so many things. Some are thirsty for material goods, some for bodily
pleasures, some for honor and prestige, and some for powers and positions. Like the
Samaritan woman we need to look at or introspect our own lives and see what we are
thirsting for. We need to thirst for God alone who can satisfy our lives. During this
Lenten season let us come to the well of Jesus our living water which is the water that
does not run out and quenches our deepest thirst for God. My soul thirsts for God, the
living God. This is the good news this week.
