*Hymn 88 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Verses 1, 6, 7

Proclaim God’s Word

Prayer of Illumination

Scripture Reading Matthew 1:18-2518 Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19 Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20 But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” 24 When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25 but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

*Affirmation of Faith - The Apostles’ CreedI believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer of ConfessionMighty God, We wait expectantly for your coming by making room for you in our lives. Yet we often find it difficult to make space for you. We are often distracted by our own feelings. We crowd our lives with the world’s preoccupations and find there is little room left for you. Forgive us for not placing you first in our lives. Pardon us for seeking earthly rewards that don’t satisfy. Help us to seek you and your kingdom first so that we would be embrace you as our great reward. (Silence for Personal Confession)
