CONCEPT STATEMENT

Townhouse 120 + 130

Designed for an art collector as a secondary residence, offices and gallery, located at the edge of a village center, the project is a single compound with parallel structures flanking a sculpture garden, in formal and spatial dialogue with each other.

Each contains a central atrium with glass railed stairs that vertically connect the three floors, unite the buildings across the garden and increase the spatial depth and the interior / exterior relationship. The upper forms, cantilevered to maximize garden space below, are faceted to provide mountain views from interior spaces, and to open central garden south to sun and views. The garden slopes up to a retaining wall between garages at the alley, obscuring buildings to the south and connecting it to the landscape beyond. At the north a diaphanous screen wall connect the buildings and separates garden and street.

Windows are positioned for privacy at the perimeter of the complex and openness to the central garden. Exterior cladding is black zinc.
