MySummerShawlettepattern,fromtheStaffProjectssectionofInterweave Knits,Spring&Summer2007,provedimmenselypopular.Short,withasimplelacepatternontheback,itfeaturedhiddenshouldershapingsotheshawlwouldstayinplaceasthewearermoved.Ithasbeenaverypopulardownloadoverthepastsevenyears.Rightfromthestart,however,knittersaskedforaplainer,longerversion.TheresultingmodifiedshawlbecametheComfortShawl,andhasbeenknithundredsoftimesasaprayershawltogivetosomeoneinneed.Iamhonouredthatthesetwopatternshavebroughtcomforttosomany.

TheshawlpicturedistheoriginalSummerShawlettefromthemagazine,re-photographedbymyselflastyear.Theinstructionsherehavebeenre-writtenandre-editedextensively,incorporatingclarifications,corrections,andthesuggestionsofknitterstheworldover.Thus,theshapeandplacementofthepanelsgeneratedbyfollowingthisupdatedpatternwilldiffersignificantlyfromthoseintheshawlpictured,whichwasknitusingtheoriginalpattern.NewphotosofseveralnewsampleshawlsarecomingsoontoaPDFnearyou.☺

MATERIALSYARNYoumayuseeithersock/fingeringorDK/sport/weightyarn.TheinstructionsarewrittenasSock(DK)wheretherearestitchcountsormeasurements.Justbesurethatyouareusingneedlesthatgiveyouclosetothestatedgaugeforthatweightofyarn.GAUGESock(DK):5(4)stsperinch.Notethatthisisalooser-than-recommendedgaugeforeachweight;youwillneedlarger-thanusualneedlestogetthisgauge.Thisresultsinashawlthatislightyetwarm,withoutstiffnessorbulk.NEEDLESUseanysizeneedlerequiredtoobtaintheabovegaugeforyouryarn.Asastartingplace:

• IknittheDKversionsusingaU.S.Size6(4.0mm).• Forthesockyarnversions,IusedaU.S.Size7(4.5mm).• Suggestion:Startswatchingwithaneedlelargerthanrecommendedontheyarnlabel.
