Teenage events such as Schoolies Weekand music festivals have earned headlines foraccidents, drug overdoses and occasionaldeaths, but Associate Professor Hutton takesup the challenge of harm minimisation at massgatherings with relish.
“I’ve been a practising nurse and I’m a mother.Of course a part of me wants to tell youngpeople to go home to bed when I am at someevents; but I know that wouldn’t work – if Iwas in their shoes I wouldn’t take any notice!”Associate Professor Hutton said.
“Young people need support even when theyare out having fun, so what can we do (asorganisers or volunteer organisations) to helpprotect young people? It’s an incredibly nebalancing act.”
A regular face at Schoolies, outdoor musicfestivals and even the Royal Adelaide Show,Associate Professor Hutton has attended ahuge range of events for young people. Theimpetus behind her research is to ask youngpeople how to best support them.
Providing insights that parents dream of, andthat regulators beg for, Associate ProfessorHutton’s work has been recognised by theWorld Health Organisation and is helpingto inform policy changes, so that support atevents for young people is more effective.
Her work has unpicked the motivation foryoung people’s attendance at events andhow they can nd what they are looking for byattending, but in a safer way.
“People use events to escape the hum-drumof daily life,” Associate Professor Hutton said.
“I want to enable event organisers to run theirevents knowing they have done as much asthey can to limit the risks and also ensure thatyoung people have the outlets that give themthe best chance of enjoying their experiencein a safe and supportive manner, even if theychoose to spend their time consuming alcoholand eating junk food.”
“My research is being shared with the SouthAustralian Police, event venues and medicalteams, and there is lots of potential for it to beused interstate and internationally.”
