• 230+ holders and producers• Users – all ages, UK wide, study & leisure• NUCAF developed by RNIB

– Good idea but had flaws:– Not publicly available– Incomplete – c.50% of titles missing– Incorrect data – withdrawals often not notified– Producer/holder details sometimes incorrect

How it happened

• 1999 - NUCAF review, Reveal planned

• 2000 – Feasibility study

• 2001 – Bibliographic standard

• 2001 – Collections register designed

• 2002 – Contract for catalogue

• 2003 – NUCAF data migrated

• 2003 – Collections data entered

                                                             

Catalogue of Resources

• Use international standards• Modify only when essential

• MARC21 Bibliographic format• MARC21 Holdings format• LCSH for both fiction and non-fiction• GSAFD for fiction

                                                             

MARC21 Bibliographic format

• Use for standard print version from which transcriptions made

• ISBN, author, title, imprint, series• Abstract/summary• Audience level (children’s and educational

materials)• Awards• Warnings (in neutral language)

                                                             

MARC21 Holdings format

• Transcription producer and date

• Specific format, number of pieces

• Narrator details (spoken word formats)

• Abridgement, part transcriptions, omitted sections (e.g. index)

• Restrictions on use

• Restrictions on reproduction

                                                             

Subject Indexing Fiction

• Main character(s) – real or imaginary

• Setting (Spain) and Time (Roman Britain)

• Topic or theme – Adoption

• Genre (Science Fiction)

• Series entries

                                                             

Getting data into Catalogue

• NUCAF records migrated into Reveal

– UKMARC variant converted to MARC21

– Data enhancement, retrospective cataloguing

• Block import of records from other holders

• Holders will be able to add:

– A new title or a new transcription for a title

                                                             

Collections Register

• Where can I find?– All sources of accessible materials– Resources on specific subjects– Resources in specific formats– Resources for specific user groups– Transcription services– Contact details – User eligibility criteria and any charges

                                                             

Suppliers Register

• Web based resource• Access to update own entries• Based on RSLP Collection Level Schema

– Additional fields– Some field label changes

• Collection record– Sub-collection and Super-collection records– Catalogue available records

                                                             

Collection data - public

• Collection title, description, stock levels• Language, audience, format• Subject focus• User eligibility criteria and any charges• Contact details• Catalogues available

• Reveal contact at holder / producer• Reveal Partnership number• Whether records are added to Reveal• Whether using NIT (Intention to Transcribe)
