ITER is based on the 'tokamak' concept of magnetic confinement, in which the plasma is contained in a doughnut-shaped vacuum vessel. The fuel—a mixture of deuterium and tritium, two isotopes of hydrogen—is heated to temperatures in excess of 150 million°C, forming a hot plasma. Strong magnetic fields are used to keep the plasma away from the walls; these are produced by superconducting coils surrounding the vessel, and by an electrical current driven through the plasma

The poloidal field (PF) magnets pinch the plasma away from the walls and contribute in this way to maintaining the plasma's shape and stability. The poloidal field is induced both by the magnets and by the current drive in the plasma itself

Conclusions
After 3 years in the project:
• Design and manufacture of the main tooling has proved to be a very
challenging task, many novel issues requiring novel solutions,
• All the special tooling for DP manufacturing have either been positively
commissioned or in the final assembly/installation phases,
• The procedures for the acceptance of conductors and RPs have been
tested and are routinely executed,
• The Prototype DP related activities are underway and turn insulation is
planned in the next weeks. Passage from stage 1 (R&D + process
qualification) to stage 2 & 3 (manufacturing of 1st and subsequent WPs)
awarded to CON at the end of 2013. Production has already started
(winding of first series DP).
