Theta Omicron… Achievement Since May 8, 1976… “and on, and on, and on!”
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the campus of Indiana University on January 5,
1911. Originally chartered and incorporated Kappa Alpha Nu on April 15, 1911, the name was
officially changed to Kappa Alpha Psi on April 15, 1915. The Fraternity is predominately African
American with the fundamental purpose of achievement. Kappa Alpha Psi seeks to train its
membership, particularly undergraduates, for leadership roles in their respective communities
and the attainment of a high degree of excellence in their academic pursuits.
Early in this century, African-American students were actively dissuaded from attending college.
Formidable obstacles were erected to prevent the few who were enrolled from assimilating
into co-curricular campus life. This ostracism characterized Indiana University in 1911, causing
Elder W. Diggs, Byron K. Armstrong, and eight other black students to form Kappa Alpha Psi
which remains the only Greek Letter Organization with its Alpha Chapter (first chapter) on the
University’s campus. The founders sought a formula that would immediately raise the sights of
black collegians stimulating them to reach accomplishments higher than they had imagined.
With achievement as its purpose, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting college men of culture,
patriotism, and honor in a bond of fraternity. Subsequently, chapters spread in succession to
the University of Illinois, the University of Iowa, and Wilberforce University campuses. By 1919,
the Kappa Alpha Psi experience had generated serious interest among black college degree
holders to form Alumni Chapters.
As graduate chapters multiplied , the Fraternity began to expand its programming, for example,
“Guide Right,” its national social out-reach (mentoring) program was started three years after
the first Alumni Chapters were formed. Today National Guide Right Programs provide
programming, role models, and mentors for at-risk youth and other youth in communities
throughout the country and internationally.
Even though Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is the only NPHC fraternity to have never extended
an honorary membership to any individual, regardless of rank in society The Fraternity has still
attracted a number of distinguished Americans. In the political realm, these include several
mayors, governors, and congressmen, most notably: Thomas Bradley, W. Wilson Goode, Bernie
Thompson, Michael White, and Johnny Ford. Brothers achieve in all forms of human endeavor
and business and law are no exception. Notable brothers here include: Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr,
Robert Johnson, Reginald F. Lewis, Bert Collins, and Theta Omicrons very own Kwame Jackson.
Civic and Entertainment leaders include: Tavis Smiley, Harry Bellefonte, John Singleton, Cedric
the Entertainer, Montell Jordan, Bishop Eddie L. Long, and Dr. Rev. Ralph Albernathy. In the
athletics arena Arthur Ashe, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Anfernee Hardaway, and Allan
Houston are also noteworthy fraternal members.

The History of Theta Omicron
The Beginning
On May 8, 1976, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Theta Omicron
Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered by eight men seeking an organization striving
towards achievement. These eight men, from diverse backgrounds, united to form a chapter that has
grown and prospered over its first 35 years.
Prior to the chartering of the chapter, twelve men were initiated under the guidance of the Alpha Kappa
Chapter of North Carolina Central University in 1973 to form a colony. Thurston Frazier, Reynauld
Williams, Raymond McAllister, Charles D. Watts, Perry Hodge, Gregory Reed, Winfred Falls, and
Sidney H. Evans were all members of the Spring 1973 pledge class. These twelve men operated as an
independent colony at UNC-Chapel Hill for their first year as a moratorium existed for new fraternities.
Thurston Frazier served as Polemarch during this time of transition. After proving Kappa Alpha Psi’s
dedication to improvement of life, the Theta Omicron Chapter was established in April of 1976 being the
205th chapter in the fraternity. Gordon T. Cureton, Dewey M. Clayton, Barry S. Stanback, Spencer A.
Wynne, and Desoto Wilson, known as the Spirit of ’76, were the first pledges initiated under the Theta
Omicron Chapter in December of 1976.
Over the years, approximately 180 individuals have been initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi through the
Theta Omicron Chapter. Among these brothers were several Morehead Scholars, Pogue Scholars,
Chancellor Scholars, Teaching Fellow Scholars, and other scholarship holders. Since initiation, numerous
brothers have gone on to prominent careers in medicine, law, and business.

Guidance
Several distinguished brothers have served as chapter advisor, including the most illustrious Laurel
Wreath recipient Howard C. Barnhill, Hayben Renwick C.N. “Pap” Parrish, Elbert Avery, Dr. Arhcie Ervin,
and Anthony Walters have also served as chapter advisors.
Theta Omicron Influence
During the early years of the chapter, Theta Omicron was instrumental in the establishment of the Iota
Xi Chapter at Duke University, Mu Iota Chapter at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and
the Kappa Xi Chapter at North Carolina State University in 1980.
Awards and Recognition
Through the years, the Theta Omicron Chapter has been very active in the Middle Eastern Province. The
Chapter has produced seven Junior Vice Polemarchs, three provincial Strategus, and one Lt. Strategus,
and seven executive board members. The Theta Omicron Chapter has also produced eight
Undergraduate Kappa Man of the Year awards, five of which were won consecutively from 1993-1997;
past Polemarch Daryl Porter II is the most recent recipient of the award in 2009. In 1987, 1992, 1995,
1996, 1998, 2000, 2004, and 2009, the Theta Omicron Chapter was named Undergraduate Chapter of
the Year in the Province.
In 1990 the chapter was named a “Super Builder” for the new International Headquarters of Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. At the 20th Grand Conclave in Orlando, Florida, Brothers Kenneth Pugh and
Kevin Davis were awarded the Guy Levis Grant Award and the Bryon Kenneth Armstrong Award
respectively. This marked the first time in the history of the fraternity that two members of the same
chapter received the two highest undergraduate awards in the same year.

KONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 3RD
AND FINAL BALL MY DEAR FRIEND!
Stefan! Ohhhh Stefan Smh!
My love for you has grown out of our many conversations and argument; sometimes I
think you say things just to make me bicker with you. However, growing to see the per-
son you are makes me appreciate you more and more. You are very special lol. I know
I can count on you and I know you are always down for your “homies”—whether that
be late trips to cookout or stopping by “The Burg” on your way back to the Hill. I be-
lieve you are going to make your mark in whatever you end up pursuing. Success will
not be a problem for you. I just ask that you remember to remain a great person, stay
true to your friends, and get some SLEEP as you take your steps toward
accomplishing it.
—”Rashy”
Stefan!Stefan!Stefan! We’ve been friends since your dred wearing, DC dressing, cackling
days! That says a LOT. I’m positive we will remain cool far past
graduation. You have been to Denver and are cool with the
Cliffords, so you are stuck being my friend! I’ve had the opportunity
to watch you grow over these four years and one thing is undenia-
ble, you love KAPsi. More importantly, you love Theta Omicron! It
makes me smile to see you live out your dream and reach such
heights of success in both Kappa and in your personal life! KOngrats

the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Always remember that God's plan for you is to
prosper you so come what may everything will be alright. Embrace the obstacles and the detours in life, they only build character. I am
beyond proud of the man you are becoming and I pray and know that God will continue to bless you. It has been a blessing to call you a
friend and although the "Bronze Bruhs" title may be retired the spirit will live on lol. Congratulations Darius on another Kappa Ball! Keep

I wish you happiness, prosperity, and joy
for the rest of your life.
You've made our family proud. Just
remember: "If you don’t stand for
something you’ll fall for anything!”
It’s been a privilege of being your parents.
God gave us the privilege of having such a
wonderful child. He blessed us GREATLY.
Tonight is your night, give all you've got
and you'll succeed.
Just believe in Yourself!
Love Mom and Dad

What an honor and blessing it has
been to watch you grow into a strong
young man. It feels like only yesterday,
your mom and I were following the
school buses on the first day of school
for you and Josh. Now we are shouting
and praising God because you both are
in college. Always remember you were
created for success and nothing can
ever stop you. Philippians 1:6 says
“being confident of this, that he who
began a good work in you will carry it
on to completion until the day of Christ
Jesus”. I Love you and I’m very proud
of all you have become.
Congratulation on becoming a member
of the Theta Omicron Chapter of
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity!

As you know Phive it’s been a long time Koming, many are Kalled but few are chosen.
It takes a real man to be a five in T.O. You should feel proud; you’re part of an elite and
select group and one of the rarest diamonds. Forget what you hear, the five is the realest
number on line. I have no doubt you will represent for all of us, hold it down and keep
that swag that only us fives can exude. The torch has been passed now it’s up to you to
light the path for those to follow. 5 Klub….you got it bruh!!!!

I COMPLETELY (hint, hint*) understand why they call you the Kon Artist now since you were able to “persuade” me to buy this ball ad. Anyways, I guess it gives me the opportunity to say that I am proud of you and the great Kappa man you have become. Enjoy your first Kappa Ball and I wish you the best in all your endeavors. Dave and Denzel 1st and foremost, congrats with all your successes thus far. Continue to lead and grow. Keep achieving and enjoy this special 35 Anniversary! -DP
