Welcome to SKILLS2015
A new toilet is needed every one and a half seconds! Some 111 million toilets are needed by 2019 to reach the goal of a Clean India (Swachh Bharat) set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Even if this goal is achieved, it will not be enough. Clearly as challenging is the cultural change needed to ensure that the Indian population makes effective use of these new sanitation facilities. There is no magic solution to achieving the necessary training and cultural change simultaneously across the huge country.
LSLS conferences are dedicated to achieving the life and livelihood skills necessary for sustainable economic growth for rural India. SKILLS2015, the third such conference, organized jointly by Rural Economic and Educational Development Society [REEDS] and Life Skills and Livelihood Skills International [LSLSI], is dedicated to the training agenda necessary to make the Clean India a success.
Skills 2015, to be held in Hyderabad, India, is timed to coincide with the UN’s World Toilet Day, November 19 - 20.

About SKILLS2015
In India, about 600 Million persons in rural areas defecate in the open; and as many as 70 per cent rural households are without access to toilets. According to World Bank’s Water and Sanitation Program estimates, this is costing the country very dearly, with an estimated 6 percent of India’s GDP, or some Rs. 336,000crores (US$ 53.4 billion)wasted annually due to lost productivity and health care costs consequent to poor sanitation.
Visualizing a nation in which the traditional habit of open defeca-tion is entirely eliminated and quality of life is improved, the chal-lenge is enormous. To provide impetus to the ongoing Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India) Campaign, REEDS and LSLSI along with government agencies, national and international affiliates is organiz-ing SKILLS2015 International Conference to address the challenges in building capacities and skills of stakeholders at various levels for achieving and sustaining national sanitation goals.
SKILLS2015 is the third in a series of Life Skills and Livelihood Skills International conferences aimed at developing the skill levels towards sustainable economies and general quality of life, of rural India. The conference draws distinguished participants representing a wide spec-trum of regulatory, academic, industrial and other sectors of life across India and overseas.

Dr. Richard W OliverConference Chair
Dr. Oliver is the founder & CEO of the American Sentinel Univer-sity, a leading online university focused on Health Care education. He was a Professor of Management at the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Oliver holds a B.Sc. in economics from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from the State University of New York.
Professor Sadananda has a career spanning internationally across many countries and spanning academic institutions and industry. Presently he is an Adjunct Professor at Griffith University and a Visiting Research Fellow at the National ICT Australia Limited. He had served as a Professorial Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales and as an Adjunct Professor at Charles Darwin University.
Shailendra Kumar Hajela a Dr. Ing. (Ph.D.) from the Technical Uni-versity of Ilmenau have had a distinguish career spanning over 33 years in the Department of Telecommunications culminating with Advisor Technology during 1991-92. He had been associated with International Telecommunication Union for over 10 years. He is a member of the Project Advisory Committee of Technology Systems Group, Ministry of Science & Technology.
Ravi K Reddy is a Chartered Accountant and a Business Advisory Consultant. He consults for many businesses, especially the small, medium and emerging enterprises. Ravi is passionate in the area of rural skills development. Recognizing Ravi’s efforts towards rural empowerment, American Sentinel University had conferred him with an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters on 19 June 2015 at Denver.

SKILLS2015 is the third in a series of Life Skills and Livelihood Skills International conferences aimed at developing the skill levels, and therefore sustainable economies and general quality of life, of rural India. REEDS and LSLSI have been jointly hosting the conference series since 2010.
Rural Economic and Educational Development Society [REEDS] is a Hyderabad based Not-for-Profit organization involved in formulating and implementing programs relating to various spheres of rural life. Its Action Programs include Drinking Water & Sanitation; Skills Development; Awareness & Education; and Monitoring & Evaluating Developmental
Programs. REEDS operations spread across seven states-Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Tamilnadu.

Life Skills and Livelihood Skills – International [LSLSI] is an initiative of REEDS to address various issues specific to the massive challenge in the area of skills development in India for meaningful utilization of its significant demographic divi-dend. Recognizing skills development as a continuing process of national and international efforts, LSLSI aims to promote
skill development and enabling support systems through co-operative and col-laborative initiatives with a prime focus on rural, underprivileged sections of society and the informal sector workforce.

SKILLS2015 is organized by REEDS and LSLSI in association with Department of Rural Water Supply and Sanitation, Government of Andhra Pradesh, National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Hyderabad (ni-msme) and UNICEF.
Department of Panchayat Raj and Rural Development is responsible for planning and execution of programs for rural development. The Department is implementing several schemes to improve living conditions of people in rural areas and to create economic awareness in rural areas. UNICEF India recognizes that the health, hygiene, nutrition, education, protection and social development of children are all connected. As we celebrate another great idea of REEDS to co-host with LSLSI, the SKILLS2015 event around one of the world’s most important social justice is-sues, sanitation for all, I wish I could have been there to share this event with you. Unfortunately the challenges of leading a University of Technology in the prevailing situation preclude my attendance. However please be assured that the conference as well as the theme bears a strong resonance with us.
21 years after democracy was achieved in South Africa the issue of sanitation and the delivery of water to households remains one of the key challenges of its reconstruction challenges for just and equitable society. This is indeed true for much of the developing world. This has partly to do with the lack of political will and the fact that for many politicians and their families this is not an issue and it has partly to do with the fact that the delivery of sanitation is often left to governments and big companies even though communities at the local level may achieve much. And this is where REEDS comes in – developing skills for local empowerment. I salute your initiatives to make tangible differences in fundamental and basic rights.

Needless to emphasize the role of Agricultural extension services play in improv-ing the efficiency of agriculture and thereby socio-economic standards among rural communities. To achieve Clean India by 2019 means construction of a toilet for 65,000 fami-lies per day or one every 1 1/2 seconds! Bringing improvement in sustainable cleanliness, hygiene and quality of life in rural areas requires both the genera-tion of primary demand and the development of a robust supply chain. Most importantly, however, is a commitment from all levels of the village to change historic cultural traditions regarding sanitation practices.
This session therefore, will focus on current and needed skills for the wide-spread adoption of healthy sanitation practices.
