Flight Deck Gear (FDG) is composed of high use and

high failure components. Limited space and budgets

call for a way to replenish these stocks without having

to replace entire units or assemblies.

Transition:

Identify material requirements for existing plastic

components.

Match or exceed the requirements with 3D printed

alternatives.

Create guidelines for desktop 3D printer use at sea.

Identify shipboard integration processes.Business Case: 3D Printed FDG

No current way to repair or replace individual plasticcomponents on FDG.

High cost replacements due to the cost per assem-bly of the entire unit.

Limited stock is kept on hand during any given un-derway period due to limited storage capacity.

Many assemblies get discarded due to failure ofitems that would cost less than $5 to replace with 3Dprinted alternates.

The Technology:

AM can be used to create replacement FDG compo-

nents on an “as needed” replacement basis.

Desktop Polymer 3D Printers are already in use

throughout the fleet and onboard several carriers.Challenges:

Safety concerns need to be identified.

Manufacturing processes need to be standardized.

Getting “buy off” from governing authorities.
