• Flightdeckcrewmembersareoftensenttootherunderwaycarriersforrefreshertrainingandreadinesssustainment.Thisiscostlytotheshipandlogisticallychallenging.Thispracticeresultsincrewmembersnottrainingwiththeiractualteammembers.InthecaseofthenewFordClasscarriers,crewmembersarenottrainingonthecorrectAircraftLaunchandRecoveryEquipment(ALRE).Lackoffemaleberthingonothershipsalsopresentslimitedopportunitytotrainfemaleflightdeckcrewmembers.
SOLUTION FEATURES• ThegoalofTEPistocreateanexpandable
frameworkofgameenginebased,immersive3DflightdeckcrewTrainingExpansionPacks(TEPs)forusebytraineesinFleetConcentrationAreas(FCAs),basedonatrainingneedsanalysis.
• 3Dgameenginesimulationbaselinewithmulti-playercapabilitytosupportallflightdeckteams(upto100players).Nostovepipetraining.
• InitialdevelopmentwillfocusonPrimaryFlightControl(Pri-Fly)andLandingSignalOfficers(LSOs).
• TheTEPswillallowforindividual,team,ormulti-teamtrainingevents.Example:AnindividualLSOcantrainwithArtificiallyIntelligent(AI)teammates,fourLSOscantraintogether,ortheLSOscantrainwiththeentirePri-Flyteam.
• Allowsfornormaloperationsandemergencyconditions(includingfaults).
• TrainsbothlegacyandnewALRE,andallowsuserstoselectandtrainontheirspecificaircraftcarrierlayout.
• Aquantitativestudytoidentifytrainingeffectivenessandlearningimpactforflightdeckcrewswillbeconducted.

LANDING SIGNAL OFFICER (LSO) TEPTheLSOTEPreceivedinitialseedmoneyfromONRCode34andPMA-205.InitialtraineerolesincludetheprimaryandbackupLSO.ThecurrentgenerationvirtualrealityheadsetswereshowntotheLSOSchoolinstructors,CAGpaddles,andstudentsandwerefoundtonotmeetthevisualrequirementsforLSOstoperformtheirduties(identifyingaircraftatadistance).Asaresult,andbasedonotherfeedbackfromtheLSOSchool,thecurrentdesignisshownbelow:

PRIMARY FLIGHT CONTROL (PRI-FLY) TEPThefirstteamthatwillbebuiltisPri-Fly,duetoitscentralizedroleandcoordinationwithmultipledeckteams.ThecurrentdesignwilluselargeTVmonitorstoshowthe“outthewindow”view.TouchscreenmonitorswillbeusedtorealisticallyreplicatethecontrolscreensinsidethePri-Fly.TacticalsimulatedbuttoncontrolswillbeaddedtoreplicatetheAirBossandMiniBossstations.Spottersmayutilizevirtualrealityheadsetstoreplicatethebinocularviewpointoftheaircraftduringapproachandrecovery.Traineerolesinclude:AirBoss,MiniBoss,Fwd/AftSpotter,ArrestingGearController,IFLOLSOperator,andADMACSOperator.
