CURRENT TRAINING ISSUES• Flightdeckcrewreadiness,refresher,andcertification

trainingopportunitiesarelimited.Thetrainingpipelineandavailabletechnologyforflightdeckcrewinitialtrainingisoftenlimitedoroutdated.

• Flightdeckcrewmembersareoftensenttootherunderwaycarriersforrefreshertrainingandreadinesssustainment.Thisiscostlytotheshipandlogisticallychallenging.Thispracticeresultsincrewmembersnottrainingwiththeiractualteammembers.InthecaseofthenewFordClasscarriers,crewmembersarenottrainingonthecorrectAircraftLaunchandRecoveryEquipment(ALRE).Lackoffemaleberthingonothershipsalsopresentslimitedopportunitytotrainfemaleflightdeckcrewmembers.

SOLUTION FEATURES• ThegoalofTEPistocreateanexpandable

frameworkofgameenginebased,immersive3DflightdeckcrewTrainingExpansionPacks(TEPs)forusebytraineesinFleetConcentrationAreas(FCAs),basedonatrainingneedsanalysis.

• 3Dgameenginesimulationbaselinewithmulti-playercapabilitytosupportallflightdeckteams(upto100players).Nostovepipetraining.

• InitialdevelopmentwillfocusonPrimaryFlightControl(Pri-Fly)andLandingSignalOfficers(LSOs).

• TheTEPswillallowforindividual,team,ormulti-teamtrainingevents.Example:AnindividualLSOcantrainwithArtificiallyIntelligent(AI)teammates,fourLSOscantraintogether,ortheLSOscantrainwiththeentirePri-Flyteam.

• Allowsfornormaloperationsandemergencyconditions(includingfaults).

• TrainsbothlegacyandnewALRE,andallowsuserstoselectandtrainontheirspecificaircraftcarrierlayout.

• Aquantitativestudytoidentifytrainingeffectivenessandlearningimpactforflightdeckcrewswillbeconducted.

Each TEP team will utilize appropriate combinations of state of the industry immersive technologies (ex., speech recognition, touchscreens, virtual reality, tactical simulated hardware, gesture recognition) based on up front task analysis.

Conduct training effectiveness studies to map effective training technology and content to fleet training objectives.

• Assesstheapplicabilityandutilityofemergingtechnologiesforinitialandrefreshertraining.

Conduct analysis and effectiveness studies to identify where in the fleet training pipeline technologies can be leveraged to maximize training and learning.

LANDING SIGNAL OFFICER (LSO) TEPTheLSOTEPreceivedinitialseedmoneyfromONRCode34andPMA-205.InitialtraineerolesincludetheprimaryandbackupLSO.ThecurrentgenerationvirtualrealityheadsetswereshowntotheLSOSchoolinstructors,CAGpaddles,andstudentsandwerefoundtonotmeetthevisualrequirementsforLSOstoperformtheirduties(identifyingaircraftatadistance).Asaresult,andbasedonotherfeedbackfromtheLSOSchool,thecurrentdesignisshownbelow:

PRIMARY FLIGHT CONTROL (PRI-FLY) TEPThefirstteamthatwillbebuiltisPri-Fly,duetoitscentralizedroleandcoordinationwithmultipledeckteams.ThecurrentdesignwilluselargeTVmonitorstoshowthe“outthewindow”view.TouchscreenmonitorswillbeusedtorealisticallyreplicatethecontrolscreensinsidethePri-Fly.TacticalsimulatedbuttoncontrolswillbeaddedtoreplicatetheAirBossandMiniBossstations.Spottersmayutilizevirtualrealityheadsetstoreplicatethebinocularviewpointoftheaircraftduringapproachandrecovery.Traineerolesinclude:AirBoss,MiniBoss,Fwd/AftSpotter,ArrestingGearController,IFLOLSOperator,andADMACSOperator.
