This is my first opportunity to
introduce myself as a newly
appointed Assistant Principal at
Hatcham College. I am very excited
to be joining a school that places such a high
value on the importance of education and I
hope to contribute to this ethos during my
time here. One the things
that attracted me to
Hatcham College is a
traditional belief in the
value of discipline and
high expectations of
student behaviour. There
is also a very clear vision
that extends all the way
to the top of the
Haberdashers’ Aske’s
Federation; our purpose is
to improve the life
chances of the young
people we are educating.
These are very important pillars for the
success of any school and I feel privileged to
be in a position to help fulfil these goals. I will
be based predominantly at the Jerningham site
and I look forward to working with the students
and parents of Middle School over the course
of this year and beyond.
It seems a very poignant time to think about
first impressions; not just in light of my arrival
here but as we all embark on a new year at
school. I am very pleased to report that our
new Year 7’s have been making very positive
strides in this regard since they joined us a
fortnight ago.
An overwhelming majority of students have
made an excellent start to the year, evidenced
in excellent attendance, punctuality and
behaviour so far.
It makes the staff at Hatcham College very
proud to acknowledge the excellent first
impression Year 7 are making
and we look forward to this
continuing as we move
through the year. I would
extend this sense of
appreciation across Middle
School with students in both
Year 8 and 9 also making a
very positive start to the year.
As a new member of the
school community I feel well
placed to reflect on the
impression that students in
Middle School are making. I
have been very impressed by
the conduct of students in
lessons and around school. There is a palpa-
ble sense of purpose among students who
attend school expecting to learn. I have also
noted the respect with which a huge
proportion of students treat staff in the
school; a clear indication of the high
expectations that sees the school thrive.

As I am sure you are well aware regular school attendance and punctuality is important in maximising
your child’s educational opportunities. At Haberdashers Aske’s Hatcham College many students achieve
100% attendance and we aim for students to have attendance well above the national average, to
ensure that our pupils fully benefit from their education. Below are some important facts regarding GCSE
outcomes and poor attendance.

What are your teachers reading? - Interview with Ms Adeaga
Ms Adeaga is often very busy, like all teachers, but being an English teacher, she is, of course,
a voracious reader. “Reading helps your creative writing, increases your imagination skills,
and gives you the skills you need for analytical writing.”
The books she first remembers reading and really enjoying were Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracey
Beaker, and Hacker by Malorie Blackman.
“I meant to read loads of book over the summer, but became absorbed by a book of
commentary on the Gospel According to John, chapter 15.”
Two books have changed her life: The Shack by Paul Young and Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.
Next one on her list? I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. She’ll LOVE that…

This week, students in Year 7 have come to the end of their transition unit. Next, they will next embark on the study of 'Animal Farm' by the acclaimed author George Orwell. Year 8 are continuing their exploration of Edgar
Allan Poe's poems and short stories, whilst also refreshing their understanding of key writing skills. Finally, Year 9 have
begun reading and analysing 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens. Their upcoming writing assessment will require them to have a good understanding of the differences between country and city life in Victorian England. A homework will be set on this area of context, but any additional work completed at home will be highly beneficial.
Hatcham's Literary Legends
In order to acknowledge the immense hard-work and effort students put into their studies in English, we are starting a new weekly competition to recognise those who demonstrate a passion and enthusiasm for the subject. Teachers, as well as members of the middle and senior leadership teams, will be nominating students for this new title based their observations during lessons.
This week Year 7 and 8 students have been working on the SMASHfest competition in class and entries are now all in. The researchers will be looking
through the entries and letting us know by the beginning of next week who has been successful and
will be going through to the next stage of the competition.
The Year 9’s have continued with the transition unit and have completed topics on Biomimicry looking at
Nanotechnology, Developments in Microscopes, Glow in the dark matter and Termite mounds. This is all in preparation for their transition assessment at the end of term.
Assessments this term will take place as follows:
Year 7 – 06/10/17 – 1 paper - KS2 – 3 Transition paper
Year 8 – 02/10/17- 06/10/17 – 3 recap papers – Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Year 9 – 12/10/17 (Boys) and 13/10/17 (Girls) – 1 paper – KS3-4 Transition paper
Recommended Reads
All KS3 students are now completing a reading journal during form time each week. Students have free choice on what they read, however, we would like to promote the reading of more challenging texts. Each week, the English department will recommend a text for students to read at home which can also be used alongside their
journal. This week's pick is… ' The Hobbit' by J. R. R Tolkien.
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.

Pupils in years 7 and 8 have been working on the Arithmetic and Number unit this term. They will be taking their first assessment during the week beginning on Monday, 2nd October. Some pupils may be moving classes based on the outcome of these tests. The GCSE course has begun in Year 9 with the pupils in this year group also studying the Number Unit.
