RICHIE ROSE

The fall of 2010 will mark Richie Rose’s third season with VMI men’s soccer, as he was brought to Lexington on May 30, 2008 as an assistant coach. He was offi-cially named the program’s newest head coach on March 15, 2010, marking the first head coaching position of his career.

Rose, who graduated from Lander University and was an assistant there for four years, comes to Lexington from the Greenwood, S.C. institution. While there, the England native’s duties included working with the players on a daily basis in technical, tactical, and physical training, as well as assisting with video analysis of performance and the recruiting of new players both domestic and foreign.

In addition to those responsibilities at his alma mater, the new VMI head man was the coach at Greenwood High School for two seasons, where he was in charge of the day to day coaching and management of players. Finally, he spent two years as a coach educator for the South Carolina Youth Soccer Association, which entailed his being a part of the process of youth soccer coaches earning various certifica-tions.

Prior to assuming the majority of the roles listed above, Rose was a Head Coach of one portion of the South Carolina State Olympic Development Program. He also spent several years coaching in England, where he coached players ages 8-16 at The Middlesbrough Football Club Youth Academy and The York City Football Club Centre of Excellence. He was also a youth team player at York City during the mid-1990’s.

Rose holds his Union of European Football Associations UEFA A License Diploma, United States Soccer Federation A License, and the UEFA Youth Coaches Award. He is currently a coach edu-cator for The Virginia Youth Soccer Association and a State Olympic Development Program coach.

THOMAS NEWMAN Athletic Trainer

Thomas Newman, a 2010 graduate of The Pennsylvania State University, will serve as athletic trainer for the men’s soccer team this season, as well as the Keydet baseball program.

Newman joins the Institute after an undergrad-uate career at Penn State, where he worked with intramural programs, swimming and diving, gymnastics, men’s ice hockey at Penn State as well as baseball, softball, and basketball at State College High School. TONYCONWAY

Assistant Coach - First Season - VMI (2001)

Tony Conway, a former three-year letterwinner for the Keydets from 1997-2001, will return to his alma mater this season to assist first-year head coach Richie Rose.

Conway, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, was a team co-captain for the Keydets during his senior year in 2000, and started 16 of 17 games that season.During his freshman year, he played in one match after spending most of the season recovering from a broken leg. The following season, he quickly became a key con-tributor in his sophomore year on defense, playing in 15 games with eight starts.

Additionally, he picked up his first career assist in a match against Bucknell.

As a junior, Conway was one of seven players to play in all 17 matches for the Keydets, earning 12 starts. Conway also provided a much needed offensive boost from the back line, as he led the team in assists with helpers com-ing against Belmont, UNC Asheville, Wofford, and The Citadel.

Prior to Lexington, Conway played in the youth club sys-tems for Crystal Palace FC, as well as Reading FC as a youth in Scotland.

Following his graduation from the Institute, Conway was tabbed the head man of the Rockbridge County High School team, where he was also a teacher for three years.

He is now entering his third year as Associate Director of Admissions at Washington & Lee University, where he serves as the administrator for the universities recruit-ing software and database, in addition to web presence and various print and elec-tronic communications.

5 VMI Athletic History

Athletics at VMI form an integral part of the school’s aim to educate the whole person. The athletic program, managed honorably over many years, is critical to VMI’s determination to encourage “the sound mind and sound body.” Mr. Giles H. Miller ‘24 ,coined the VMI educational expe-rience as a three-legged stool with academics, military training, and athletics all forming pillars supporting the mission of the Institute. VMI’s proud intercollegiate athletic history dates back to 1866 with the formation of a baseball team, but the first organized squad came in 1892 when cadet Walter H. Taylor served as captain and coach of the first football team in 1891. Since that time, VMI athletics has evolved into a rich and storied history that continues to thrive into the 21st century.

A few highlights of VMI’s athletic history include: undefeated football teams in 1920 and 1957. The 1957 squad under the lengendary coach John McKenna finished 9-0-1 and was ranked 13th in the final Associated Press poll. In 1934, the alumni educational fund was established, forming one of the first athletic scholarship organizations in the country. In December 1924, VMI joined the Southern Conference beginning an illustrious his-tory that saw Keydet squads capture seven league football titles, three basketball championships, 31 indoor and outdoor track championships, five cross country championships, 10 wrestling championships, nine swimming championships, and five cross country titles.

Perhaps the most famous athletic story in VMI history was the two-year glorious run of the 1976 and 1977 teams basketball teams. The 1976 squad advanced within one game of the Final Four before bowing to Rutgers in the East Regional Final, and in 1977 VMI finished with a school record 26-4 mark and reached the “Sweet 16” round of the NCAA tournament.

Famous VMI athletic alumni include George Marshall, a football player from the class of 1901 who served as chief of staff in World War II and was awarded the Nobel Prize for the Marshall Plan that rebuilt war-torn Europe. Jimmy Leech, Class of 1921, starred on VMI’s unde-feated 1920 squad and was inducted into the Collge Football Hall of Fame. Bobby Ross, Class of 1959, distinguished himself in the college and professional coaching ranks and led Georgia Tech to a national championship in 1990 and the San Diego Chargers to the Super Bowl in 1995. Ron Carter ‘78, who played on the NCAA tournament bas-ketball teams of the 70’s, played with the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA. Thomas Haskins ‘97 became the NCAA’s leading rusher in I-AA football, breaking a mark that stood for 17 years. In 2002, basketball player Jason Conley became the first freshman to lead the NCAA in scoring when he averaged 29.3 points.

Ten VMI athletics or coaches are currently enshrined in the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. They are Jimmy Leech (football), Frank Summers (football), Joe Muha (football), Bosh Pritchard (football), Paul Shu (Football), Weenie Miller (Basketball Coach), Johnny Mapp (football/track), Nelson Catlett (football), Bobby Ross (football), and Bob Thalman (football).

The school nickname “Keydets” is derived from a southern drawl pronunciation of the word “cadet.” The kangaroo serves as the school mascot and is one of only four U.S. colleges that uses the marsupial to represent its sports teams. VMI fields 17 teams on the NCAA Division I level.

VMI, with an enrollment of 1,400 cadets, has the third smallest enrollment among NCAA Division I institutions, behind only Centenary and Wofford. Approximately one-third of the Corps of Cadets plays on one of VMI’s intercollegiate athletic teams making it one of the most active athletic programs among its student body. Of the VMI athletes who complete their eligibility, 92 percent receive their VMI diplomas. In August, 1997, VMI fielded its first women’s athletic program with a cross country team and has since added three additional women’s sports. More will follow as female enrollment increases in the coming years.

Throughout most of the 20th century, VMI athletics teams competed as a member of the Southern Conference and played a large role in the rich history of one the nation’s oldest college athletic conferences. In December 2001, the school announced that it would join the Big South Conference in 2003, beginning a new athletic chapter for a new century. VMI’s first year of competition was, in fact, the 2003-04 season, and the Keydets have enjoyed success in the conference since, including multiple post-season honorees. That list has included Reggie Williams, who led NCAA basketball in scoring for two consecutive seasons, the 2006-07 and 2007-08 campaigns, when the Keydets received national attention for their fast-paced style of play. In 2008-09, the Keydet programs posted several notable results: VMI basketball posted 24 wins and came within just one victory of the program’s fourth NCAA tournament appearance, as twin brothers Chavis and Travis Holmes became the top scoring twins at the NCAA Division I level. In addition, runner Donnie Cowart earned All-American honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while women’s soccer finished at .500 for the first time and earned its initial post-season win, a 2-1 win over Winthrop in the first round of the Big South Championship. Finally, VMI won the Big South Sportsmanship award for the fourth-consecutive season.

The 2009-10 athletic season was yet another successful campaign. The Keydet baseball team defeated No. 1 Virginia, 12-3, at Gray-Minor Stadium and garnered its highest-ever ranking in a national poll at 26th. The women’s cross country team netted its highest-ever finish at the Big South Championships, while the Institute also added another women’s offering in water polo. Finally, the department earned its unprecedented fifth-straight Big South Sportsmanship Award.

2010 Season Preview

2010 SEASON OUTLOOKThe 2010 VMI men’s soccer team is ready to get off to a fresh start with an old face in a new place, as former assistant coach Richie Rose will take over the reins of the program this season. VMI fans can expect a better product than years past, as the intensity and quality have improved drasti-cally this preseason according the VMI’s new head man.

“The main thing about this year so far is that the intensity and the qual-ity has improved drastically,” said Rose. “We, as a team, set a different approach this year of doing a lot more developmental work through the tactical and technical side of the game, which will benefit us this year, and in the long run.”

The program returns a solid core of players with significant experience, as 16 letterwinners, along with nine starters, return to take part in version 2010 of the Keydet program.

“Every coach has their own style of play, and their own style of leader-ship and management,” said Rose. “Therefore, it will be somewhat of a different style this season, but still building on what has been built in previous years.”

This different style was evident early in the preseason in the teams first exhibition match of the season. The Keydets hung tough with No. 2 and defending NCAA National Champion, the Virginia Cavaliers, holding the Wahoos scoreless for 53 minutes before falling 4-0.

“At the beginning of the season in the past, we have set too many out-come goals. This season, we decided to set performance goals, as well as outcome goals. During preseason games this is big, and that is something we certainly did against Virginia, one of the top teams in the country,” said Rose.

”Our goal there was to try and play our game and not be intimidated. We had success them that long, working the ball around, and we achieved our performance goals, but not our outcome goal.”

GoalkeepersThe rock of the VMI squad, four-year starter Brian Sowell, returns for his senior season after putting his name atop of the VMI record book in several categories. Last season, he logged 1,583 minutes in his junior year top put him on top of the minutes played with 4,415 in his career. Additionally, he now leads the program in save percentage at 77 percent and in career saves with 308, while ranking third in shutouts with seven and in goals against average at 1.88.

“Brian started as a freshman, and we would like to see him break the shutout record,” said Rose of his standout goalkeeper. “He is a key player for our team, and should be able to keep us in games this season. Now the game has changed and nearly 70 percent of the game is at their feet, he has to refine and adapt his game. He is a great keeper and one of the best in the Big South, and I hope he gets all the accolades he deserves this year.

The backup position will be up for grabs, with sophomore Taylor Feuerstein and freshman Daniel Kitchen will battle for time behind Sowell. Feuerstein was on the squad last season, but did not see any game action, while Kitchen was an All-District selection as well as a Second Team All-Region and All-Metro selection during his senior season at Douglas Freeman High School in Richmond.

“For Taylor, I would like to see him not be satisfied being backup, but if he doesn’t set that goal of becoming the No. 1, he won’t be the No. 1. I know he will keep working and get better,” said Rose of the Cary, N.C. product.

“For Daniel Kitchen, I am very pleased. He is an outstanding goalkeeper coming from the Richmond Strikers, and has shown with an outstanding preseason that he is ready to challenge for the No. 1 spot. His all-around game has been excellent. I want to get him some more time on the field to see what he can do this season.”

2010 VMI Men’s Soccer Fact Book 7

2010 Season Preview

DefenseThe defense returns a solid group of returners, and Rose will look to sprinkle in a pair of promising freshman in Stephen Mallon and Santo Ripa. Additionally, the durable two-year starter junior Brandon Gary as well as the mercurial Zaher Shihata, the versatile David Rochow and the leadership of Kurt Zimmerman could change the ways of the Keydet defense.

“We have a good mix of the guys that we brought in with Stephen and Santo, who will give us some very good depth in the style that we play. Both are big, strong, dominant boys who will win balls and play a more physical style for us. The leadership with Brandon, and the cohesiveness of Zaher, David, and the senior leadership in Kurt should hopefully keep us from conceding as many goals as we did last year.”

MidfieldThe midfield offers a trio of players who bring qualities to the pitch in Matt Seinfeld, Brian Harding and Kip Zechman. Seinfeld, who missed a majority of the season last year due to injury, is finally back to form. Harding, a senior who has been a solid contributor in the midfield for three seasons and was the teams leading scorer a year ago with seven points, also returns. Zechman played in 16 games last year, 13 as a reserve and logged 566 minutes.

“I am very excited for the central midfielders that we have in Seinfeld, Harding and Zechman. Each bring different aspects to the game. Kip brings composure, Matt brings great skill on the ball, composure, and the ability to score some goals for us, and with Harding, you’ll see someone who is physically and technically be able to dominate with skill as well as work rate,” Rose added.

What the central midfielders have in skill, the outside midfielders will match in pace as well as balance. In that group is junior Ayao Sossou, who was the lone selection to the All-Big South squad as he was named to the second-team for the first time in his career. Zimmerman, a team co-captain, along with the afore mentioned Rochow and Stewart Wilkinson will “bring great depth in the attack and good balance on the defensive end,” according to Rose.

ForwardsFor a team that scored only 10 goals a year ago, where the offensive punch will come from is a valid question. Senior co-captain Sonny Landry, along with classmate Zach Morgan will bring experience, while junior Amir Shihata, who is fit to form, will be looked upon for a reliable scor-ing punch.

“This is going to be one of the most experienced attacking units we have had in awhile, as we bring guys back like Morgan, Shihata, and Landry. I am hoping that they are going to score goals for us, and also help our team develop in attacking situations,” said Rose.

Additionally, junior Jacob MacIntyre, who played in 16 games with four starting nods a year ago, will get a good look and is “strong in the air,” while freshman Chase Barnett has been impressive finding the back of the net in preseason training.

Coaching StaffJoining Rose on the sideline for his initial season will be assistant coach Tony Conway ‘01, who will assist with the goalkeepers as well as all other facets of the program.

“Coach Conway is an extremely valuable member of the coaching staff and soccer program as a whole,” said Rose of his top assistant. “He brings game experience from his playing career in England, and not long ago, here at VMI.”

Rose is even more excited about the fact of having a VMI alum on his staff to guide him through situations that VMI can produce.

“His knowledge of the Corps and his success of being a student-athlete at VMI have already proven to be priceless. Having someone to help manage the cadets and help balance academics, soccer and the Corps, and having someone who understands these demands can help players balance their responsibilities,” said Rose.

“I have always believed that how the head and assistant coach work together determines the success of the coaching staff, which adds to the harmony of the team. Tony is great to work with and always has the bests interests of the players and program on his mind.”

A former player, Daniel Welsh ’10, will also be on staff this season as a volunteer assistant coach after concluding his playing career last year.

ScheduleThe 2010 slate begins with a pair of out of conference matchups, begin-ning on Thursday, Sept. 2 in Baltimore against UMBC. Two days later, the Keydets will make the trip to Annapolis to take on Navy on Sept. 7.

“To open up the season by coming to Maryland and face UMBC, as well as face Navy in their tournament,” said Rose of the early-season portion of the schedule. “Playing another service academy team is nice because the players feel like it is more of a level playing field, and they know that the players on the opposite side of the ball are facing similar challenges.”

Of the 16 opponents the Keydets will face this season, the teams com-piled a winning record of 133-125-39. Nine of the teams also had winning records.

“Anytime in Division I, you’ll never get an easy schedule,” said Rose of this season’s slate.

“Teams we play have lots of skill and good depth which makes for tough matches, but that is what we like. We can compete with all of these teams, and I would like to think we can have success with the schedule we have. The Sculley Tournament is something that we are proud to continue, something we want to continue, to honor the man that started up the entire program. Liberty will be here once again, and are always a tough team, Marshall has improved very much in the past two years, and St. Francis, N.Y. comes back after last year pretty much dominating the tournament.”

In the 2010 Big South preseason poll, the Keydets were tabbed to fin-ish ninth in the conference. Despite the unfavorable ranking in the poll, coach Rose remains cautiously optimistic.

“The game isn’t played on paper. The preseason polls are based on what we did last year, and the year before that, but everyone can have a good year. We have been competitive, I think now with the experience and quality that we have, mainly with the experience and quality that we have, this will be one of the first years that we don’t have to start freshman. I think this year we can achieve higher than we have in the past. It is about time for us to come into the conference and put our foot down.”

25 The Big South Conference

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evi-dent by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mis-sion of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid - receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range stra-tegic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first

live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a part-nership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has expe-rienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basket-ball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s bas-ketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships - the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event.

In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence.

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its

heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 per-cent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

2010 VMI Men’s Soccer Fact Book 26

General J. H. Binford Peay III, VMI Class of 1962, became the Institute’s 14th Superintendent on July 1, 2003. Through Vision 2039, he has ushered in a period of enthusiasm, growth, and change through-out all aspects of VMI. Never losing sight of VMI’s primary “academic focus,” which he emphasizes as “first among equals,” Vision 2039 sets forth a plan that will guide the Institute for decades to come, as it moves toward its 200th anniversary.

Enhancing the physical and cultural environment is a key component for the future. Nearly all academic buildings have been renovated in recent years. Maury-Brooke Hall, the new name for the Science Building, is set for renovations when funding becomes available. What had been called Maury-Brooke Hall, the building adjacent to the Barracks with cadet support offices and activities, has been renamed Shell Hall in honor of Lt. Gen. George R.E. Shell, a former superintendent. Also renovated were Crozet and Kilbourne halls. New capability to host major conferences of state and national impor-tance came to VMI with the completion of Marshall Hall. The opening of Third Barracks and the completion of renovations of the older portions of the Barracks complex provide cadets with the most modern housing ever for cadets, though the Spartan nature of the quarters has not changed. At the same time the facilities on post have received a facelift, the details of the daily life of cadets have been reno-vated. Adjustments have been made to the class and regimental systems, to the Honor System, to cadet organizations, and to the daily schedule.

“We must have the daily schedule right; leadership, cadet life, study time, management skills, and every-thing else at VMI evolve around that,” says General Peay.

Academically, VMI remains a clear leader among undergraduate colleges. Modernized and technologi

cally enhanced academic buildings and a full academic support staff complement splendid instructors. The Institute receives annual national and state recogni-tion for its programs.

Military and athletics combine with academics to form the fabled three-legged stool, and all play major roles in Vision 2039. A significant increase in com-missioning has resulted from General Peay’s empha-sis on the importance of military service, though not necessarily a full military career. Over the past seven years, the percentage of graduates receiving commissions has grown from 34 percent to more than 50 percent. Athletics is a major emphasis of Vision 2039. Intercollegiate and club sports are the beneficiaries of major improvements. Among new or renovated facilities are the football stadium, named in honor of P. Wesley Foster Jr. ’56; the baseball stadium, named in honor of Senator Elmon Gray ’46 and G. Gilmer Minor III ’63; and the locker room complex near the baseball stadium, named in honor of Bill Paulette ’69. A number of drill fields that will double as athletic fields are under construction, and new confidence and obstacle courses have just been completed in the North Post area, known as “Leadership Valley.”

General Peay considers his Superintendency as an opportunity to give something back to VMI which has had such a significant influence on his life and that of his family. His Father, J.H.B. Peay, Jr. was a graduate of the VMI Class of 1929, and he and his wife, Pamela, have two sons, who are also gradu-ates: Jim, Class of ‘98, and Ryan, Class of ‘02. Born in Richmond, Virginia on 10 May 1940,

General Peay, upon graduation, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery, embarking on a 35-year career in the United States Army. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from VMI, a Masters of Arts degree from George Washington University, and he is also a gradu-ate of the United States Army War College. As a cadet, he was a quarterback on the football team, a member of the Honor Court, a Battalion Commander and awarded the Institute’s prestigious Cincinnati Medal at graduation.

He assumed command of the 101st Airborne Division on 3 August 1989 and led the Division throughout Operations DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM in the Persian Gulf. Promoted to Lieutenant General in 1991, he was assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, Department of the Army and Senior Army Member, United States Military Committee, United Nations and on 26 March 1993, he was promoted to the rank of General and appointed the 24th Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army.

His last assignment was Commander-in-Chief, United States Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, from 5 August 1994 to 13 August 1997, with responsibility for the region encompass-ing twenty countries in Africa, the Middle East, Persian Gulf and South Asia. General Peay is cur-rently Chairman, the Allied Defense Group, and a Director with BAE Systems, Inc.

27 Page Title Goes Here Athletic Director Donny White

The most ambitious capital improvements to athletic facilities in 20years have been launched under the Vision 2039 initiative of VMISuperintendent General J.H. Binford Peay, and Athletic Director Donny White has been a guid-ing force in the process.

Over the past several years, both the football and baseball programs have seen their facilities signifi-cantly upgraded with the additions of P. Wesley Foster, Jr. ‘56 Stadium and Gray-Minor Stadium. Those changes to Post will continue, with fur-ther athletic facilities included in the North Post project, scheduled for completion within the next year.

White is entering his 28th year in VMI Athletics, having spent 15 seasons as a coach and the past 12 years as Athletic Director. Upon his return in 1998, White immediately went to work addressing the challenging issues facing the VMI athletic department. At the same time, he has built support for intercollegiate athletics among the VMI community and its alumni. His effort has resulted in a change inconference affiliation, increased fund-ing for operations, the development of women’s athletics, and a better overall competitive environment for VMI sports.

The 2009-10 athletic season was yet another successful campaign underWhite’s leadership. The Keydet base-ball team defeated No. 1 Virginia,12-3, at Gray-Minor Stadium and gar-nered its highest-ever ranking in anational poll at 26th. The women’s cross country team netted itshighest-ever finish at the Big South Championships, while the

Institute also added another women’s offer-ing in water polo. Finally, the department earned its unprecedented fifth-straight Big South Sportsmanship Award.

Those successes fall in with several other notable accomplishments achieved in recent years under White. In 2008-09, the Keydet basketball pro-gram posted 24 wins, defeating Kentucky at Rupp Arena along the way, and came within just one victory of the program’s fourth NCAA tourna-ment appearance for the second time in threeseasons. Also in recent years, the lacrosse and women’s soccer programs have experienced landmark postseason success, the men’sswimming & diving program won back-to-back NEC titles, and participants in both track & field and wrestling have competed in NCAAChampionships, including runner Donnie Cowart, who earned All-American status in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 2008-09.

White compiled a distinguished VMI coach-ing career in two sports spanning 15 years. He joined the football staff in 1971 and helpedlead the Keydets to two Southern Conference Championships and a State Championship. White coached the defensive backs to a number onenational ranking in 1975 and a number four rank-ing the following season. He served as VMI co-

defensive coordinator from 1976 to 1981and had the Southern Conference’s top-ranked defense in 1977. His defensive backfields led the conference in pass defense three times. White also recruited seven football players who were selected all-conference.

In the fall of 1981, White became VMI head base-ball coach and began to resurrect a program that had not won a Southern Conference game thethree previous years. His 1982 debut squad compiled six league wins and White was named Southern Conference Co-Coach of the Year. Histeams won 85 games in six years and his 1987 squad reached the Southern Conference champi-onship game. While serving as baseballcoach, White also taught on the Physical Education staff as an assistant professor.

White is a 1965 graduate of VMI with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. As a cadet, he was a Distinguished Military Student, named Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, and was awarded the VMI Intercollegiate Athletic Award for excellence. White co-captained the 1964 VMI football team and was selected All-Southern Conference in baseball for three con-secutive years as a shortstop while also leading the team in batting. He was inducted into the VMI Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.
