One thing at a time

• Social Mediao Twitter basicso What to look foro How to find ito What to do with it

Twitter

Started March 2006: real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices, 34 Employees.• According to Twitter, 100 million users• The leading social networks, by size and traction, are:

• - Facebook, 2x as large as MySpace, with 10.8% monthly growth• - LinkedIn, primarily for business• - YouTube (second largest search site)

Sum Parts

Twitter is part of overall marketing outreach, along with:- website, blog, social media footprint- phone- email- trade shows/conferences- speaking engagements- earned media (getting bloggers, columnists to cover your space)- analyst briefings- online reputation management

How to start

• Step 1: Create a profile, with following elements NOT optional:• 1. Real name• 2. Picture• 3. Link to your site (that links back to your Twitter profile)

Find people

• Step 2: Search who to follow, so first identify your audience(s):• - prospects (are you B2B or B2C)• - press/media (there are wikis on media on Twitter)• - investors, contributors• - politicians• - recruits• - competition

o 1. Search by Locationo 2. Search by terms, keywordso 3. Set up a search on yourself, your company (create RSS feed into

Google Reader)

Lay of the Land

• Step 3: Lingo:• @ a public note to one person specifically• RT Re-tweeting someone else's tweet• DM Direct Message (private message to that person only)• # Hashtag for searches/indexing• Lists

• Also, common IM abbreviations:• IMO In my opinion (also: IMHO In my humble opinion)• Tkx Thanks• FWIW For What It's Worth• IRL In Real Life

Shortened URLs

• Twitter only allows 140 characters• Use less than that, to help others Re-Tweet you without editing you• Tweetdeck and other clients automatically shorten URLs.

• So this: http:// http://www.google.com/search?q=techcrunch+number+of+people+on+twitter&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

• Turns into this: http://bit.ly/uzMXI

• Shortened URLs are also automatically hyper-linked (clickable) so others don't need to copy/paste the URL into a separate browser to launch the site.

Best Practices

• Step 4: Etiquetteo Do not simply feed your blog/website updateso Don't set up auto-follow DMs. Try as much as possible to look at the

profile of the person that followed you, and if they meet your criteria go ahead and follow back

o Indicate what a link is: Great info on ROI: (video) [insert shortened URL]

o Thank people for Re-tweets. Can be individually or several within one Tweet

o Forget anonymity. People have sophisticated search tools, you don't have to omit a name or brand for a Tweet to be linked to a thread about them (positive and negative)

Go!

• Step 5: Interact!• Ask/answer questions (even if not directed to you, these are public

exchanges)• Guest blog• Meet/talk with/connect IRL

• Finally: Remember that Google indexes tweets, and everything you update remains in the public domain.

name, etc. and find out your "rank")

Recommended Reading

• Recommended reading/people to follow:• Jeremiah Oyang (former analyst, Forrester Research) covers social media,

has amazing resources: @jowyang• Robert Scoble, formerly with Microsoft, Twitter early adopter: @scoble• www.sethgodin.com Seth Godin's marketing blog• Sarah Evans, @prsarahevans (good following, really plugged into the

PR/Marketing of Twitter)• All the fine folks in Madison• More Wisconsin-wide Twitterers• Media on Twitter (nationwide)

• Don't forget: Find a "Twitter now" -type plugin to add to your browser. This helps you twitter with a single-click, and shortens the URLs. You can use standalone URL shorteners as well such as bit.ly and tiny url . TwitPic is also useful for posting photos.
