VNEA’ 27th Annual World Junior Pool Championships Once Again Held On The Beautiful Bayfront In Erie, Pennsylvania Boasts 25% Player Increase!
Bayfront Convention Center • Erie, PAJune 15-18, 2017
The Bayfront Convention Center is located on the shores of Lake Erie’s Presque Isle Bay. Both host hotels (The Sheraton Erie Bayfront and the Courtyard By Marriott Erie Bayfront) served as perfect lodging locations for this years Champi-onships. Pirate Ship excursions, fishing trips, Presque Isle sight-seeing tours, and waterpark visits were all part of this exciting weekend event. Inside the Center, you were guided to the tournament room by several Sponsor Banners that let everyone know that the VNEA was in town! As you entered the arena, several other banners and signs guided the youth through the neatly arranged room of 80 Valley Pool Tables (provided by Warner Coin). Two Vendors were set up in the room to offer the kids every possible pool accessory. Old Time Billiards and AC Billiards booths were loaded with prod-ucts for players of every skill level which included a profes-sional cue repair station.
Ozone Billiards once again sponsored the event and has been a welcomed addition to the VNEA Family. Ozone graciously do-nated every Gift Card that we awarded at our event. This huge donation is greatly appreciated and we look forward to con-tinuing our partnership with Ozone for many future events.
“Dr. Cue” Tom Rossman conducted Artistic Pool competi-tions (fun-filled Contests) non-stop throughout the weekend. Nearly every one in attendance took part in the competition with the top scores competing in the Finals for World Titles and Certificates.
AC Billiards conducted the exciting and fast-paced Speed Pool qualifiers (who can run a rack of 15 balls in the fastest time). The goal was to crown Champions in each of the 3 Divisions and set up the “Battle of the Ages” in the E2P Chal-lenge!
Jerry Briesath also brought his “Pool School” on the road to Erie and spent the weekend working with every junior player that sought his advice. Jerry’s skill working one-on-one with his students is like nothing else in the business. When you leave a session with Jerry, you can guarantee that your game has just improved!
Professional Live Streamer, Mike Warden, from TVMike.tv was on hand for the weekend to “stream” nearly every match played in The OZONE Finals Arena. Mike did an incredible job commentating the matches and displayed great professional-ism and knowledge about the VNEA. This was the second year using Mike’s services, and we look forward to using him for future events.
An informative Control Stage kept the players updated with critical tournament information and was led by Junior Tour-nament Co-Director’s, Ed Borgia (Warner Coin) and Marshall Kohtz (V.V.S). Their staff worked diligently to get through the enormous amount of matches that were played throughout the weekend.
The CompuSport Software Program again worked flawlessly to allow our events to run like a well-oiled, machine. The Tournament Committee Staff consisted of the following...
Ed Borgia - Erie, PA Marshall Kohtz - Lincoln, NE Dave Warner - Erie, PA Bill Skrutsky - Erie, PABrian Elliott - Bay City, MI Gregg Elliott - Bay City, MI
Both Singles and Team competition for the weekend were broken down into 3 divisions:
Youth - Ages 7-13; Minor - Ages 14-17; Major - Ages 18-20
Hot Action Singles Competition...
Male singles events recorded 147 entries while the female singles had 58 entries. In total, 205 shooters would square-off in a double elimination format that would lead to some great shooting and refreshing sportsmanship.
Team Competition...
The 2017 event had 65, 3-player squads. These great numbers represented 14 Charter Holders from an impressive 7 States, Ontario, Canada and New Zealand. This made up for a total of 418 ENTRIES in the Team and Singles events.
Geographic Representation...
States: Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania
International: Ontario, Canada & New Zealand
Players Reception...
A fun tradition of the VNEA Junior event is the fun-filled Play-ers Reception on Friday evening. Players get to take a break from their hard-fought Singles matches and enjoy some Pizza and Soda’s. This is also a great time for players from all over the country to socialize with one another and make lasting friend-ships with their fellow competitors.
Top Cat Challenge...
At 8:00pm on Friday evening, the VNEA conducted the “4th Annual” All-Star Team “Top Cat” Challenge! This event con-sisted of the winners and runner-up’s of the three male and three female Singles Divisions. These twelve players would form (4), 3-player All-Star Teams and would play for the title of Top Cat’s! This competition was a real highlight of the tournament and the players all enjoyed their well-earned time in the spotlight.

VNEA Juniors!Team Opening Ceremonies... Saturday morning at 8:30a sharp, the VNEA welcomed the Teams with its annual Opening Ceremonies which includes an impressive “Parade of Flags” featuring all of the states and countries involved. As in years past, VNEA Director of Market-ing & Promotions Brian Elliott welcomed the hundreds of players and family members to the team tournament. Brian also complimented the Charter Holders and the junior play-ers themselves for making this year a special event. Brian thanked the junior teams for wearing terrific team uniforms this year and applauded the players for their classy attire. Elliott then continued the ceremony by recognizing the 2017 Singles Winners and presenting them with their well-deserved trophies. This years awards were incredible “Charlie Cougar” acrylic statues that were, again, the hit of the week-end! As flash-bulbs lit up the arena floor, so did the player and parent smiles and pride. Next, ten anxious youths partici-pated as flag bearers in the annual “Ceremony of Flags” and the U.S., Canadian and New Zealand anthems were proudly played. This part of the ceremony is very important to the players as they all take great pride in their state, province and country. As many dignitaries were recognized and the days schedule was read, you could feel the excitement in the room for the Team competition that was about to unfold.
Prizes... There was a total of 36 beautiful GW Cues that were given away to the Top 4 places in the 3 divisions of team play. Dave Pearson donated these great cues as well as 72 GW Cases! Thank you so much, Dave. There were also 30 Cues and 30 Cases (compliments of Valley) that were given to the winners and runners-up of the competitive mini-tournaments and ever-popular Junior/Junior Scotch Doubles throughout the weekend.
Other Special Notables...
• Warner Coin Machine did a terrific job with table set-up and tear-down as well as daily maintenance.
• Junior Referees Jim “Woody” Woodside and Nils McConnell ran a remarkably smooth tournament with the help of Chris Talbot and Melina Thompson who did a great job.
• Local sports team Mascots were in attendance for various events.
• Terry Fullerton (Ashley & Hailey’s Dad) from Minnesota volunteered to be the official “photographer” of the event and did an incredible job!
• Warner Coin (local Erie Charter) and the Erie Sports Commission graciously sponsored the Parents Reception for parents and guardians. The event drew nearly 100 people who all enjoyed a couple hour break from the Tournament Room. The Erie Sports Commission also provided a “Gift Bag” for every tournament participant!
• AMI raised over $5,000 for the Junior Program at our Ve-gas Championships through a “Jukebox Raffle” at the annual President’s Reception.
