Volcano infoWhite island volcano is 40 years old. White island is 48km off the coast of the North island. The island is submerged.

White island marks the northern end of the volcanic zone.

70% of the cone is under sea.

The highest point is 321m, and the crater floor is less than 30m above sea level

Volcanic Activity

• White Island Volcano is 48km off shore. It is one of the most active Volcanoes in NZ, it has been building up with volcanic activity for the past 150,000 years.

The first eruption of the currentepisode occurred at4:54 am on 5 August 2012

The town

• There is no town on the white island it is just a active volcano.

• There was a Sulphur mining which occurred at intervals from the 1880s until the 1930s and the remains of the factory can be seen on the island.
