FREE ROAD SAFETY COURSE

DID YOU KNOW?

RESEARCH SHOWS

The Wasted Lives Young Driver Education Programme is delivered FREE by Lancashire Road Safety Partnership facilitators. The short session will challenge the attitudes of soon-to-be young drivers and their passengers towards risk taking behaviour on the roads.

It will improve their ability to assess risk, make the right decisions and accept responsibility for their actions both as a driver and a passenger.

“Immediately after the course 87% of students said that they would take fewer risks on the road. Three months after the course, 73% of participants said that they now take fewer risks showing that the course has a significant long term protective impact”

Brainbox Research Ltd

“In my opinion the sessions have been an essential part of educating young people in vehicle safety for both drivers and passengers alike; the knowledge they gain from this potentially life changing experience will remain with them for the rest of their lives and may even influence others. Just one life saved makes the whole programme worthwhile.”

Tony Gillies, Curriculum Manager

Every year 180 young people are killed or seriously injured on Lancashire’s roads.

SESSION DETAILS

Studded with hard hitting DVD clips, in this activity participants will be asked to volunteer contributory factors to crashes and try to rank them into the ‘fatal 4’. Students will examine the consequences of inappropriate speed and not wearing a seat belt.

Participants will learn what a unit of alcohol is, how long it stays in the blood and how it affects your body. They will examine the legal consequences of what happens if you risk driving, especially the morning after.

Students will learn what BOTH illegal and legal drugs and medication do to a person’s driving ability. They will find out about the drug wipe testing kits and undergo the Field Impairment Tests police carry out on suspected drug drivers.

Missing Matthew is the true story of how Matthew (22) lost his life in a horrific crash racing his best mate. One moment of madness left sheer devastation with his family and friends. His parents tell the harrowing story and leave us in no doubt about the widespread devastation such a loss causes.

Vicky Peters died in a road traffic collision when she was 18. She was a passenger in a car when the driver chose to speed. This is the real life story told by Vicky’s family about the shocking incident that occured and advice for Lancashire’s young people.

“You never think it’ll happen to you but it could!”

“I had no idea taking drugs could affect your driving so much”

“I believe I am taking a lot away from today. The shocking examples brought it home and made me realise this could be me or my mates.”
