Three ways of working in Communities

1 Providing a service to meet some needs

2 Developing people’s abilities and gifts so they can meet their own needs

Community Action

• Legitimate, useful and effective• Sometimes used as a blend• Jesus used all three.

Community Provision

Providing services to people who use what we offer. They are not involved in shaping or delivering the service.

• Good for immediate need, crises, making contacts.

• Identifies you as the giver.• You keep the power and control.

Community Provision

Focuses on the effects of the problem and not its roots

Can create dependency

Leaves the cause of the problem unaffected.

Community Action

Collaborating with local people and organisation to plan and deliver services.

Campaigning to get things put right

• Good for getting local people together.• Tackles the issues that affect people.• Good for looking at the causes of

problems• Brings in power from outside.

Community Action• Can be short term, focussing on one

campaign about one issue.• Can lose connection with people’s actual

everyday needs.• Can be hard to spot the Christians at work

in this.

Enable local people to take responsibility and act in response to needs and issues.

• Local people set the agenda, identify own resources and needs.

• Local people take control of the process• Good for long term change• Power is handed over.

You will not be able to control the agenda.

You can lose the overt Christian influence.

You may have to deal with some people in your church or project who may be uncomfortable with these aspects.

All are legitimate. All have their strengths and weaknesses.
