The Case for 21st Century EducationEducation is changing.Competition is changing internationally. The workplace, jobs, and skill demands are changing.

Digital Natives“Different kinds of experiences lead to different brain

structures” - Dr. Bruce D. Berry of Baylor College of Medicine. it is very likely that our students’ brains have physically

changed – and are different from ours – as a result of how they grew up

Who are the digital natives?

Our students today are all “native speakers” of the digital language of computers, video games, instantaneous communication, and the Internet.

Those of us who were not born into the digital world but have, at some later point in our lives, become fascinated by and adopted many or most aspects of the new technology are Digital Immigrants.

The ChallengeOur Digital Immigrant instructors, who speak an outdated

language (that of the pre-digital age), are struggling to teach a population that speaks an entirely new language

The Nomadic Grazing Patterns of Digital NativesDigital Natives are used to receiving information really

fast. They like to parallel process and multi-task. They prefer their graphics before their text rather than the

opposite.

MethodologyToday’s teachers have to learn to communicate in the

language and style of their students. This doesn’t mean changing the meaning of what is

important, or of good thinking skills.

What is Web 2.0?The Internet itself is a series of interconnected

servers joined by a web of protocols to provide mass communication and document storage.

Web 2.0 is an additional layer over the Internet

that allows people to interact with information and be content providers. The Read/Write Web.

Web 2.0 CultureFills the web space with blogs, wikis, and

online collaboration tools.

Most of these tools are free and offer “unlimited” space.

For the most part, they also share whatever you post to them with a global audience.

Web 2.0 CultureDeveloped Social Networking sites

Which in turn creates Social Networking Fatigue – “…induced by persistent solicitations to join new social networks. It is especially acute in those who are already members of more MySpaces than they can remember.” – Wired magazine issue 15.05, May 2007

Tag…You’re it!Web data has been connected by HyperText – the

ability to connect through a series of links.

Web 2.0 allows data to be connected through TAGS.

Tagging assigns a keyword to a piece of media like a picture, video, or blog. These tags are then shared in social networking sites to connect people based on similar interests.
