School routines and schedules are well underway.
Teachers are busy getting to know their students and what
individual needs they may have. As a parent, I can tell you
that I feel blessed to have the staff we do in our school.
Currently, we have 126 students enrolled from PreK to Grade
12. It is exciting to see all our busy classrooms.
Last spring students and parents completed the Tell Them
From Me survey. Thank you for all those who took the time to
complete this survey. At the beginning of the school year, the
teachers met to look at the survey results as well as the
reading data that had been collected from the previous
year. This data helped our school establish our Learning
Improvement Plan (LIP). Our LIP has two goals we are
focusing on:
By June 2016, 80% of Grade 1-8 students in LCS
will comprehend, at grade level, what they read
as measured by Fountas and Pinnell (Grades 1-
4) and Basic Reading Inventory (Grades 5-8).
By June 2016, there will be a decrease of anxiety
in Grade 7-12 LCS students from a mean of 48%
to 28% as measured by the Tell Them From Me
Survey.
Our first fundraiser was a bottle drive. This fundraiser has
been ongoing throughout the past few weeks. Thank you to
all who donated their bottles. If you still would like to donate,
we are accepting bottles until the end of September. A
special thanks goes out to Adam Crooks who brought in his
trailer for us to store the bottles. Our next fundraiser will be in
November. We will be selling Mom’s Pantry products. Please
keep your eyes out for the order forms.

On September 8, I attended a Career
Work and Exploration (CWEX) inservice.
This is an excellent program for high school
students. Students complete classroom
modules online. Once the online
component is complete, they are
partnered in a work place where they gain
hands on experience.
Mrs. Cornet, Mrs. Ellis and myself
attended a Prekindergarten basics
workshop on September 18. It was an
opportunity for us to learn what the PreK
program should like in the classroom, and
the resources that support the program.
Our School Community Council (SCC)
met this week. We discussed goals and
plans for the upcoming school year. Thank
you to the SCC members who volunteer
their time to be on this committee. Your
continuous support of school events, goals
and fundraisers is very much appreciated.
As September comes to an end, we
hope that the weather holds off for
everyone to finish up harvest and get lots
of their fall jobs completed!
Mrs. Lisa Packet – Principal
The Lafleche School Community
Council will be running a concession
at the Len Hicks Auction Sale on
Wednesday, October 21. If you are
able to donate baking and/or
volunteer to work a shift during the
sale please contact Wendy Fiset at
472-7814.
Robb Nash
Presentation
The Grade 9 –
12 students
were very
fortunate to
have the
opportunity to
attend this
division-wide
presentation
on Thursday,
September 10
in Moose Jaw.
Robb Nash
suffered life-threatening head injuries due
to a serious car accident when he was a
teenager and as a result often
experienced feelings of anger, self-doubt
and depression. After working through
physical as well as emotional issues, he
chose to use his own personal stories,
songs and videos to touch base with
young people throughout Canada. Robb
sensitively deals with serious issues
including drug and alcohol addiction,
bullying, self-harm, depression and suicide.
He inspires youth to stay hopeful,
recognize their unique strengths and make
positive choices. The Robb Nash Project is
a message of strength and hope at a time
when many youth need it most. Our
students would like to thank everyone who
made this opportunity available:

at 5:30 pm. Volunteers are needed
to help measure distances. If you are
able to help out please

Burrowing Owl Presentation!
On Friday, September 18 we had Lori
Johnson from the Burrowing Owl
Interpretive Centre in Moose Jaw visit our
school to do a presentation to all
Kindergarten to Grade 12 students as well
as the children from the Lafleche Early
Leaning Childcare Centre. She brought
her little owl friend named Potter; his name
came from the movie or book Harry Potter.
This owl sure did poop a lot! Some of the
things we learned is that burrowing owls
can lay up to 5-12 eggs, they are silent
fliers, and they can rotate their heads up
to 270 degrees. The name “burrowing” owl
comes from where they live. They live
underground in burrows, but they are
pretty lazy and they don’t dig their own
holes; they take over abandoned burrows.
When they are born they are about the
size of a thumb. These owls are
endangered so we must do our best to
protect them. I really enjoyed this
presentation. Thank you so much, Lori and
Potter!

Breakfast Club
We will once again be serving free
breakfast snacks to all
Kindergarten to Grade 12 students
each Wednesday morning from
8:30 to 8:50 at LCS. Our first
Breakfast Club will be on
Wednesday, October 7. We
receive funding for this program
through a government grant as
well as monetary and food
donations from community
organizations, local businesses,
the SCC and parents. If you wish to
donate, please contact Wanda
Longworth or Jenna Pfeifer at 472-
3192.

KINDERGARTEN
The Kindergarten class is gearing up for fall.
The students have recognized that it is
getting cold outside and that the leaves
are changing colour and falling on the
ground. Our class has been busy learning
about colours through exploration,
science experiments, taste tests and
literature. We have begun our first unit in
Math exploring sorting and patterns. In
ELA, we started with listing to draw, Jolly
Phonics and rhyming. We have also been
learning about the jobs of an author and
illustrator. Pete the Cat books have been
our favourites. Last Friday, our class got to
attend the burrowing owl presentation:
“We learnt that owls burrow in the dirt. The
foxes try to eat the owls and sometimes
owls lose their homes because the wind
pushes the dirt away.” The students love
coming to school and look forward to all
their learning experiences. The
Kindergarten PE students have been
practicing for the upcoming Pass, Punt
and Kick Competition. They have also
been practicing co-operative games.

GRADE 3 & 4
The school year is flying by! It’s hard to
believe it is almost October; our Grade 3/4
class has been busy in all of our classes.
We Are Working On…
ELA - our class is continuing on with our
comprehension skill-predicting. We have
also been working hard each week
learning new sets of spelling words. Our

consumers in various habitats. With that,
we are learning all about the role each of
those producers and consumers play in
the circle of life (food chains and food
webs).
Health - we have discussing how our
differences are what make us who we are
and about our “self-worth”.
Art - we are working on our water color
paintings and we will soon begin creating
various food chain and food web
“craftivities”.
