What is renewable energy?
L/O - To know what a renewable energy resource is, and to know the different types
What does this advert tell you about EDF energy??
Is EDF a green energy company?
What is a ‘green’ energy company?
This advert was criticised because it was misleading and people thought EDF was a green energy company.
EDF do not use ‘green’ energy, they are just trying to reduce the amount of Carbon Dioxide they produce. ALL energy companies are required to try to reduce Carbon Dioxide levels by about 60% by 2020
What is green energy?
Why is it important?
What is renewable energy?
Why is it important?
Green energy produces less Carbon Dioxide which is important for
reducing global warming
Renewable energy can be used again. This is
important because fossil fuels are running out
Year 7 Assessment – Energy and Electricity
How can renewable energy help us?
During this assessment your teacher will be looking at 2 things ;-
• Your ability to research a topic effectively.• Your knowledge and understanding of renewable energy.
Remember, this work will be levelled
TASK 1
TASK 1 – You are going to research renewable energy resources. You should look for the answers to these questions.
• What does renewable mean?• What are the renewable energy resources?• How do each of the renewable energy resources
work?Research using the internet can be very difficult because there
is so much information. To make it easier we often use a research planner
Use your book or paper and split it into boxes for the information you want to find. You can then add information into the
different boxes as you read each website
What does renewable mean?
What are the different types of renewable energy?
How does solar energy work?
How does wave energy work?
How does wind energy work?
How does hydroelectric energy work?

TASK 2
TASK 2 – Your task is to design a house that is powered completely by renewable energy. You will gain extra marks if you use all types of renewable energy resources. You should also add labels to your drawing to explain how each energy resource works
Remember to think about • How will you heat your house?• How will you give constant power to the fridge?• How will you light your house at night?

How hydroelectric power works
The batteries of the solartaxi store energy from the solar panels, as well as energy from the electric outlets that Palmer plugs the vehicle into every evening.Palmer, who is currently in Washington DC, plans to stop at the World Climate Change Conference in Poland before taking the Solartaxi home in December. And Palmer’s solar-powered driving ambitions won’t stop then. He’s already planning an 80-day solar-powered race around the world next year. The Solartaxi isn’t headed for mass production any time soon, and solar panels probably won’t be a major source of energy for cars in the future. But Palmer’s venture proves that we can wean ourselves off petroleum— it just takes a little ingenuity.
One man’s quest to travel around the world in a car without using a drop of gas is coming to a close over a year after it began. Swiss adventurer Louis Palmer has been driving his three-wheeled solartaxi since last July.
As you can see in the photo, the boat is powered by two fins that raise and lower with the tide, which drive the propellers. On board energy is provided by solar panels and the boat is primarily made out of recycled aluminum.By sailing from Japan to Hawai’i, Kenichi hopes to set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled in this type of wave-powered ocean goer. To be sure, this boat doesn’t go very fast (it’s got about half of the speed potential of a diesel powered craft), but this type of innovation is certainly interesting to see. As long as recreational sailing exists, why not try to minimize environmental impact as much as possible, right?
There are various ways to travel the sea in style. One of the most environmentally friendly ones would certainly be using sails alone. I mean, wind is free, right?Well, a Japanese man named Kenichi Horie is attempting to be just as environmentally friendly but without the sails. How does he do it? With a wave-powered boat.
