The Wayside School Series

Things at the Wayside School are just a little…different. The school has 30 stories, but no 19thstory. The students are slightly strange, and the teachers even more so. For example, there is Mrs. Gorf, who turned her students into apples when they misbehaved. Fortunately, she accidentally turned herself into an apple, and was then eaten by a substitute. There is Todd, who always gets in trouble every day and is sent home on the kindergarten bus at noon. His mission is to see what exactly the class does every day from 12:00 to 2 pm.

Many other strange characters and unusual events in these books make for very fun and interesting reading!

Other great books by Louis Sachar include…

Holes

Stanley’s family has a history of bad luck, so he isn’t too surprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a boys’ juvenile detention center, Camp Green Lake. But there is no lake—it been dry for over a hundred years—and it’s hardly a camp: as punishment, the boys must each dig a hole five feet deep and five feet across, in the hard earth of the dried-up lake bed. The warden claims that this pointless labor builds character, but that’s a lie. Stanley must dig up the truth.

The Boy Who Lost His Face

David is only trying to be cool when he helps some of the popular kids steal Old Lady Bayfield’s cane. But when the plan backfires, he’s the one the “old witch” curses. Now David can’t seem to do anything right He even walks into Spanish class with his fly unzipped! And when he finally gets up the nerve to ask out a cute girl, his pants fall down in mid-sentence. Is it the Bayfield curse at work? Or is David simply turning into a total loser?

Johnny’s in The Basement

Johnny's in the basement where his parents won't bother him, sitting on top of The World's Greatest Bottle Cap Collection. He's just turned eleven and his parents have decided that it's time for him to grow up. Suddenly he has to wash the dishes and take out the garbage. And get rid of his bottle caps! His birthday presents are grown-up junk like socks and underwear and -- worst of all -- social-dancing lessons. Growing up certainly doesn't seem worth it -- until he meets Valerie Plum, who hates dancing school even more than Johnny does

Someday Angeline

Nobody understands why Angeline is so smart. She could read the first time she picked up a book, she can play the piano without ever having had a lesson, and she even knows what the weather is going to be. But being smart is causing Angeline nothing but trouble. The mean kids in school call her a freak, her teacher finds her troublesome, and even her own father doesn't know what to do with an eight-year-old girl who seems to be a genius.

Sixth Grade Secrets

When Laura Sibbie starts a secret club at school, she makes the other members them give her something totally embarrassing as "insurance," to make sure they don't tell anyone else about the club. She promises to keep the insurance secret, unless someone blabs. Gabriel, who never tells on anybody, would be a perfect member of Pig City. He wants to join, too. But when Laura asks him, something goes terribly wrong. Now there are two secret clubs in Mr. Doyle's class, and guess who's the head of the new one-Gabriel! Each club is determined to topple the other, and nobody's secrets are safe.
