pulling no punches
After the massive success and popularity of boxing at the Olympics, interest for a Loughborough club was aroused in both returners and freshers. Unfortunately, the coach who had previously run a weekly box-fitness session had moved on, resulting in no provision at all for these students.
Without a level 2 coach or a certified facility the University could not
affiliate as a registered boxing club with the Amateur Boxing Association,
and so the Athletic Union contacted local community club Shepshed ABC
for support. The club discovered that they could launch a Shepshed ABC
“Satellite Club” on campus which would enable University members to
take part in amateur boxing shows, and so the Loughborough Students
Boxing Club was created!
The club meets twice a week on the University campus, and once a
week at Shepshed’s gym allowing participants to spar in a ring with
professional equipment. Shepshed ABC has been running for 11 years just
3 miles from the University and already has a number of student boxers
attending. It is fully affiliated to the ABA and dedicated to providing new
opportunities to its members. Just last week it had a visit from Olympic
Gold Medal Champion Luke Campbell who was inspiring to all the clubs
attendees and praised the Uni/Club link to the new satellite Club’s
Chairperson Hannah Bradshaw.
Head Coach and former professional fighter Shaun Norman will be
delivering the sessions and is thrilled that the link has been made. “I’ve
had students attending Shepshed ABC for a long time and am looking
forward to providing them with sessions on campus and also setting up
links with other Universities for shows. The club will also be providing
sessions for those who are just interested in achieving greater fitness
levels through the sport too!”
Hannah Bradshaw, Satellite Club Chair commented: “At the club’s first
taster session the sheer number of people displaying a keen interest in
boxing blew me away. I believe that this enthusiasm has been brought
on by our country’s recent success in the Olympics and we plan to
keep the ball rolling in Loughborough. We are pleased to link with a
local community club that can provide us with the chance to compete,
and also use their facilities whilst we apply for funding for our own
equipment.”

Saturday 27th October saw the annual BUCS Cycling Hillclimb, an event
which (I am sure the riders will testify) should be re-named, Annual
Agony Day. A hill climb is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin, a
timed mile run up Curbar Gap in Derbyshire with an average gradient of
11% with parts ramping up to close to 20%.
This year’s event was organised by Sheffield University and took place
in glorious sunshine and autumn chill. With Loughborough’s tunnel
of support lining the road looking out over spectacular views over
the Derbyshire Dales, the scene was set for some serious pain. The
women’s event was a closely run-affair for places 2 through to 11 with
only 31 seconds dividing ten competitors. Loughborough’s own Molly
Weaver, obliterated the field by 25 seconds, even with what she claimed
was a wheel which was rubbing against the brake; a very impressive
performance for a fresher. National U23 Women’s Time Trial Champion
Eli Thorogood fought hard to create an impressive 1-2 finished for
Loughborough. Loughborough Women’s Team also claimed the team
prize; giving them two golds and a silver for the day.
The men’s competition had a great turnout of 150 riders. Regardless of
ability, every single competitor got great support on their way up with
spectators sprinting alongside them and creating a tunnel of noise in
true Tour de France style, greatly contributing to the atmosphere of the
event. The race itself was incredibly tight, with only 6 riders going sub
6 minutes in impressive displays of power and lack of upper-body. The
podium unfortunately evaded Loughborough, but sibling rivalry saw
Loughborough’s David Nichols pip his brother Andy to the post by two
seconds to claim fourth place.
The team prize was won by half a second by Sheffield who slightly edged
out Loughborough to conclude an awesome day of sunshine, sweat
and exhausted athletes. The event proved that despite current affairs
in Professional Cycling, the British domestic scene and university cycling
thrives on.
KEEPMOVINGON UPWOW caught up with Loughborough student’s cycling to find out about their gruelling hill climb, and how they got on.

IMS if fully underway, with many amazingly
close games, tense one-day events and skilled
performances, the top place on the score
table is for any halls’ taking. JP have proved
their worth already gaining two trophies,
while Faraday continue to demonstrate that
consistency is key; placing well in many one-
day-events.
Recently, we have had IMS Exec hustings. A massive congratulations
to the new IMS Exec elect: IMS Chair, Steffan Lloyd (Elvyn), Vice-Chair,
Martha Riggs (Bill Mo), One-Day-Event Co-ordinator, Ben Samuels
(Cayley) and Stash, Media and Merchandise, Jenny Twentymen (Faraday).
I wish them all the best when they take over in March and I’m sure they
will do a great job! I want to take this opportunity say a huge thank you
to all sport secs who are leaving their committees for their endless hard
work and commitment and welcome to those new to committee who
made it through their challenges!
Your sport secs have to be commended for the amount of teams they
train and organise for all the leagues and one day events. We have had
competitions in: handball, pool, darts, ultimate frisbee, rush hockey,
The Big Match season has been abundant with fixtures over the last five
weeks. Men’s Hockey took on Nottingham University’s First XV in a fierce
battle on the Waterbase in mid-October. Five minutes in, Loughborough
scored the first goal and the momentum was kept up throughout the
match to give the Loughborough boys a 4-1 victory over the visitors.
This great start to the weekly fixtures was followed by the Men’s Rugby
League meet with Gloucestershire on the floodlit 1st XV pitch. Despite
great energy, Gloucestershire were rewarded a couple of early penalties
which threatened an early lead. However, the side were unable to take
advantage and Loughborough’s strength saw them take the first half
12-0 and finish the game cheering in dominance with an impressive 30-4
victory.
As October came to a close, it was the turn of Men’s Volleyball to take
on Cambridge. The opening of the match was very close, with Cambridge
taking the first set 25-23. The pressure was on the home side and they
retaliated fast and hard; dominating the following three sets to take the
match 3-1 and preserve their undefeated stance in this season’s BUCS
efforts.
In November, the attention turned to the women as Netball 1s took on
rivals Leeds Met Carnegie at the Netball
Centre. The Loughborough girls put out a
strong side and attacked quickly, taking a
10-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and
19-8 at half time. Although Loughborough
held the advantage of the momentum and had
managed to take the score to 21-14 in the third
quarter, a dislocated shoulder for Leeds Met’s
Laura Gentle unfortunately saw an early end to the
game which plans to be rescheduled.
As WoW goes to print, Men’s Basketball 1sts have just taken an
impressive victory against Northumbria 1sts in David Wallace. Momentum
was set early in the match as an impressive score of 32-18 saw
Loughborough take the first quarter. Northumbria’s defence tightened
up dramatically in the second quarter, although it didn’t last long. As
the Loughborough force pushed through, the final score, 96-57, echoed
around the hall sealing a powerful, dominating performance from the
boys.
Up until Christmas, we have Big Match fixtures from Women’s Hockey,
Women’s Football and Men’s Rugby Union so head down and show your
support as Loughborough take on the best teams in BUCS!

beach volleyball, tug of war, bowling and canoeing. So a massive well
done to everyone who has got involved and I can only encourage more
of you to take part and make the use of the sporting opportunities on
offer.

Newham Neptunes ended Loughborough Student Riders unbeaten start to
the season with a nail biting game. Loughborough looked shaky in the first
half, missing starting guard Connor Washington and forward Emile Hopkins.
Trailing by 11 in the second quarter, the Student Riders rallied behind the
hot shooting of Will Maynard and began to close the gap. The interior
presence of Jerrelle Okoro and Damian Cope help bring Loughborough all
the way back into the game, Okoro tying the game with just two minutes
to go. Newham’s experienced guards continued to frustrate Loughborough
and a few costly mistakes down the stretch cost the young side the
comeback, falling just three points short, 69-66.
Without Drew Sullivan available, Joe Pinchin stepped in as coach for the
match.
‘We showed glimpses of how good we could be today but our first half
performance left us in a very tough situation. The team responded well
to being short-handed and improved throughout the game and we had a
good shot to tie at the end of regulation but today wasn’t to be. We have
to take this experience and learn to compete at our best for the entire
game.’
The National Cup has seen both Men’s and Women’s 1st teams in action.
The Student Riders men faced Derby Trailblazers, tough Division One
opposition. Despite keeping the game close, Student Riders failed to get
over the hump and Derby took the game with a 13 point win, 78-65.
Loughborough Student Riders Women were to have better luck, however.
Facing Manchester Mystics at home Loughborough took a small lead early
in a scrappy first half. Manchester stuck around until mid-way when, in the
third quarter Loughborough tightened up on the defensive and continued
to get good offense in transition. Pushing the basketball, Loughborough
won, 62-40.
Despite a victory that sees the Women’s 1st’s undefeated and into the
quarter final of the national cup, Coach Matthew Harber was cautious.
“Our performance versus Manchester had a mix of positives and negatives;
in that we showed clear signs of improving our defensive strategy and
execution, but we struggled offensively at times. We know that we have a
long way to go if we want to be competing with the top flight teams this
year, but I’m confident we will continue to grow from week to week.”
In Mid-November, five members of the Loughborough Basketball
Programme were in action for the British Basketball League against Mersey
Tigers. Leicester Riders seized victory with a 79-40 score line of which
four of the five Loughborough players registered points. Joe Pinchin was
delighted with the performance: “It was great to see the five Loughborough
players on court together this weekend, they all looked to be enjoying the
game and played well in the minutes they received. Connor [Washington]
was excellent throughout, demonstrating his offensive ability at that level
but also his maturity in leading the team. Jamell [Anderson] was good too!
It was great to see him grab a starting spot this week, he has settled into
the season and I am sure there is a lot more to come from him.”
Leicester Riders are now four points clear at the top of the league and
it is certain that many more great things can be expected from the
Loughborough Basketball scene this season.
