INTRODUCTION
A total of 250 species of Pteridophytes has beenrecorded for the Reserva Biológica San Francisco(RBSF), including five newly described species fromthe vicinity of Podocarpus National Park (Lehnert2006a, b) that are endemic to the region, or at leastto Ecuador. Covered here is the RBSF from 1800 to3140 m, where ca. 380 collections of ferns and fernallies were gathered by the first author for the DFGproject “Cryptogamic plant diversity of the Purdiaeanutans forest in southern Ecuador and its relationshipto soil, climate, and vegetation structure”. Within theframework of the larger project, the frequently usedcomparative study site, Bombuscaro near Zamora, isnot included here because no extensive collectionswere made there by the authors. Since we focused ourefforts primarily on the Purdiaea nutans forest, whichcovers the ridges between 2000 and 2600 m in theRBSF, our list for that area is fairly complete and wellsupported by collections. Less studied are the queb-radas and the subpáramo zone of the reserve. Thusfuture collections are highly likely to further increasethe total number of pteridophyte species known fromthe RBSF.
The major reference for this study was the check-list of Ecuador (Jørgensen & León-Yánez 1999),which lists more than 1300 species of ferns and fernallies for the country; 177 are considered as endemicsfor Ecuador (Valencia et al. 2000).
