streets and alleys and rural roadsplotting the location of apricot andpeach trees. They covered mast ofthe ares..The remainder will bevLdted this summer.

Also last summer, 'weekly surveyswere made in potato production ar-eas to study the movement oi'phidsand population build-up. Thosescouting activities continue. A num-ber of potato company ffeldmcn areassisting in that work.

A pilot area: southern Binghamand northern Power counties hasbeen designated to test green peachaphid control masures.

Gfttins said 100 percent of theknown peach and apricot tree own-ers in the test area have agreed tohave trees treated with an insecti-cide or removed.

"That is an example of the fan-tastic cooperation we are receivingfrom everyone we ask to help in thispest management program," Gfttfnsstated. 'We'e truly thankful forsupport. Without it, the programcould not possibly be as successfulas we expect it to be," he added.

Another source of green peachaphid infestation fs bedding plantsgrown locally fn greenhouses orshipped into Idaho each spring fromUtah, according to Gittins.

"If our pest management programis to succeed, w'e have to regulateshipment of bedding plants into thestates," Gfttins explained.

Cooperation on that phase of theprogram has also been outstandingThe Idaho State Department of Ag-riculture has enacted regulationsconcerning fmporting bedding plantaHelping enforce th ose regulationsare the USDA's Animal and PlantHealth Inspection Service, the Idahostate plant yathofogfst's offke andIdaho state police.

In addition, the Utah division ofPlant Industry and several ~ largerUtah bedding plant growers are co-operating to help make the greenpeach aphid management programwork.

The program fs based on researchdone by UI College of Agriculturescientfsts. Leaders in that workare Dr, Guy Bishop, yrofesmr of cn-tomolgy at Moscow, and Dr. RichardOhms, extension potato specialistand research professor at Twin Falls

Gittins noted that intertwined fnthe program are ecological and en-vironmental concerns. This fs de-monstrated by including a study onthe effects of pesticfdes, Also, fieldsampling has been expanded to gath-er information on yredator andparasite insects which feed on pota-to insect yests.

"This multi-faceted program, re-lying on vIde cooperation frommany yersons and gioups, has beensingled out at several national meet-ings as an exemylary pest manage-ment action program," Gittfns stated

If successful, the program willsave Idaho potato producers "mil-lions of'ollars with little compara-tive investment," he safff.

Soma measures of success fs ex-pected this year. "We look for sfg-niticant reduction fn aphids and di-sease in selected areas during the'1+3 crtop season where our pestinatragement program fs being con-duoted," Gittfns concluded.
