Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 17 Issue 11
Friday 28th April 2017
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to Term 2 and with the return to school,
winter has definitely set in. I trust everyone managed to
have time off to relax and rejuvenate and that students
return to school ready for the term ahead.
I am often asked how our students fare post school and
it is so refreshing to get correspondence from them in-
forming me of their successes. I include an email from
Cynthia Lai of the Class of 2016.
“I thought I'd update you on my US Status. Last week, I
got admission offers from UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa
Barbara and UC Davis. For UC Davis I also got the Prov-
ost Award, an international student's academic schol-
arship. While I unfortunately didn't get into the Ivy's, I've
been placed on the waiting list for Harvard, Columbia
and the University of Chicago so I've still got my fingers
crossed although I am already really happy with the
outcome.
I'd like to thank you again for writing me a recommen-
dation. Without it and Reddam House as a whole, I
surely would not have gotten in and been in my posi-
tion today.” Congratulations Cynthia, you can be
proud of your achievements.
The Hamilton Island Art Retreat was another great suc-
cess despite the devastation to the island caused by
Cyclone Debbie. Mrs. Symonds reports that the stu-
dents were impressive and the facilitators of the various
workshops were of the best and engaged well with our
students. She was also impressed with how the commu-
nity had cleaned up the area and reported that it was
business as usual.
We welcome Clare Elisabeth McGregor to the Reddam
Family and congratulate Michael and Emily on her birth
on 11th April. Jude is very proud of his little sister who
weighed in at 3.6kg.
There are many holiday activities and student success-
es on which to report:
• Miles Davis was selected in the NSW U18 hockey side
and the Australian U16 Schoolboy’s hockey side for the
following hockey tournaments. This Thursday and Fri-
day he takes part in the Australian U18 Championships
in Newcastle and in May, an International tournament
in Germany.
• Joshua Devine participated in the NSW Central Coast
Judo Competition on Sunday 23rd April.
Competing in this competition is one of the require-
ments for entry into the NSW State Judo team. Joshua
won all his fights on Sunday and achieved a Gold Med-
al. He now commences training with the State team in
readiness for the National Competition to be held at
the Gold Coast in June this year. Great work Joshua.

• Yonatan Freund participated in the Australian Open
Karate Championships, where he won the gold medal
becoming the Australian Champion for 2017. The
event is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, with
nearly 1000 competitors from 10 countries around the
world. With the national season continuing over the
next few months, Yonatan has several NSW State tour-
naments coming up, as well as the final Selection
Camp for the World Championships, to be held in
Spain in October 2017. Good luck in your preparations
Yonatan.
• Jade Rimer and Sofia Styles performed in the Convict
Escapades over the last 4 days of the holidays at the
Hyde Park Barracks Museum. They have been rehears-
ing since the beginning of the school holidays with a
break over Easter. They auditioned back in March. It
was a living exhibition based on the convicts and they
were awesome. They should be very proud of them-
selves for participating and their commitment to the
Performing Arts
• Alisa Tyshchenko competed in her first International
Fencing Competition in the holidays in Shanghai, Chi-
na. The "Dulwich Ziemek Cup" is an Asian U14 foil com-
petition with fencers from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia
and other Asian countries. She finished 6th and was
awarded a medal and a medal winner's certificate.
• Jake von Oertzen completed his individual fundraising
initiative for the upcoming Community Service Trip. He
hiked a total of 120km of the Sydney Coastal Walk,
spanning from Barrenjoey to Cronulla. He set out to
finish the trail in six days and added an additional
challenge of doing it all barefoot. He ended up walk-
ing 30km a day and finishing two days early. The
whole experience was physically challenging, but ex-
tremely rewarding. Jake managed to raise $1,500 to-
wards the International Community Service Project
and had a lot of fun doing so. Congratulations Jake.

• Emily Wang has made the Regional Final of the Ros-
trum Voice of Youth Competition which will be held
on Monday 1st May. Congratulations Emily: an amaz-
ing achievement.
Today we held an ANZAC Day assembly and the mes-
sage of appreciation for those who have made the
ultimate sacrifice during times of war to ensure our cur-
rent freedoms were well made by the Junior and Senior
Executive members and Mr. Kable and Mr. Dalglish at
the Woollahra and Bondi ceremonies respectively. Lest
we Forget.
Next week’s activities include:
This year's ballet gala offering - Avant Garde will be
performed on Monday 1st May and Tuesday 2nd

The Year 7 Parent- Student Study Skills workshop with Dr.
Prue Salter in Adelaide Hall at 7:00pm on Wednesday is
a vital evening for both parents and students of Year 7.
The Year 11 students have a workshop with her on
Monday during school.
The whole school Parent Talk on Cyber Safety on Thurs-
day evening in Adelaide Hall at 7:00pm would be in-
formative for parents struggling to guide their children
through the ever-present dangers of the online world.
Have a good week,
Dave Pitcairn
DIRECTORS NOTE
Welcome to Reddam House’s 2017 ballet production
Avant-garde. We hope to treat you to a musical and
visual feast performed by the talented ballet students
of Reddam House. Performers range from Kindergar-
ten to Year 10, about 4 to 16 years of age.
Avant-garde comprises of two short ballets. Our 2016
ballet gala was a host of tutus and tiaras, an homage
to classical ballet technique. Avant-garde as a con-
cept invokes works of culture and art that are experi-
mental and radical. I was inspired by the sounds of our
two works, Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of
Paganini and Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to
the Orchestra.
The twenty dancers chosen for Rhapsody have been
challenged technically and physically, and inspiration
ranges from classical technique to Broadway, Jazz
and the Classic routines of Fred Astaire and Ginger
Rogers. This ballet displays unique patterns, solos, and
style. The images are inspired by the artist Wassily Kan-
dinsky and the choreography draws inspiration from
his famous saying. Of all the arts, Kandinsky said, ab-
stract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you
know to draw well, that you have heightened sensitivi-
ty for composition and for colours, and that you are
the true poet. We simply need to replace ‘painting’
and ‘draw’ with ‘dancing’ and ‘move’ to marvel at
what our students perform with such artistry and con-
viction.
Act Two is danced by all our ballet students and as far
as we can determine, is an Australian premiere. Britten
wrote The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra as a
narrated introduction to classical music and the struc-
ture of the orchestra. For our presentation, we use our
very own Reddam House Opera and Ballet Orchestra
as a stunning background. Our dancers represent the
main sections of the orchestra: the woodwind, the
strings, the brass, and the percussion. The dancers
dance in solos, duets, trios and ensembles. Each
group’s movement represents the instrument that ac-
companies them. As all the instruments join together in
the famous fugue, all of our dancers also take the
stage in fugue-like fashion, building to a thrilling finale.
Each of these scores was written for the concert hall,
not as an accompaniment to classical dance, and we
hope to uncover something special by bringing these
two powerful art forms together in a special new pro-
duction.

2017 REDDAM HOUSE FOOTBALL SPANISH TOUR
After the success of the inaugural Reddam House Foot-
ball Tour last year, we are launching a more ambitious
tour in December this year to Spain. Reddam Berkshire
will join us for the first leg of the trip which will see us
based in Madrid. Barcelona will be the base for the
second half of the trip. We will be playing games
against local opposition, training with some of the big-
gest clubs in both cities, watching La Liga games and
doing stadia tours of both the Bernebue and Nou-
Camp
We need a few more players to make this tour happen
so please get in touch with me ASAP and I will send
you the itinerary for what is shaping as another won-
derful footballing experience.
