General

The French, Japanese, Portuguese, and Turkish user interfaces have been updated.

PolyWorks|Inspector

Object measurement scripts can now be used to measure cross-sections.

When CNC probing or CNC scanning, PolyWorks now verifies whether the measurement path is entirely or partially out of reach by the probing or scanning assembly such as when the measurement object cannot be reached by the current tool orientation.

Out-of-reach issues are avoided when generating and optimizing measurement paths as well as when adding objects to a measurement sequence using the assisted sequencing technology.

The collision detection functionality flags out-of-reach issues the same way as potential collisions in both the Sequence Editor pane and the measurement path in the 3D scene.

Intermediate Release 6

Out-of-reach issues in a measurement sequence can also be analyzed while in the Measurement Path Analysis mode. The side of the working volume that is related to that issue is displayed in red wireframe.

When performing operations outside of a measurement sequence, such as when CNC probing a measurement object, a warning icon informs the user of out-of-reach issues. If these operations are launched anyway, the probing or scanning tool assembly and the CMM table are displayed in red in the 3D scene. The side of the working volume that is related to that issue is displayed in red wireframe.

Intermediate Release 6

When CNC probing using either the CNC CMM or I++ CMM plug-ins, tactile scanning is now supported for plane features. The Grid step point acquisition parameter allows users to adjust the tactile scanning grid pattern. PolyWorks creates an efficient grid pattern according to the properties specified and the cropping of the nominal plane primitive.

The environmental data gathered by the probing device, such as pressure and air temperature, is now kept for each measured point. This functionality is unavailable for scanned or imported points.

Other improvements have also been made in the following dialog boxes regarding the environmental data of measured points:

New columns have been added to the Edit Measured Points dialog box to display this data. The columns are only visible when their respective values have been measured.

New columns can be added to the Device Positions and Targets dialog box to display the mean, minimum, and maximum temperature.

The new Environmental Parameters section has been added in the Properties dialog box of data objects. It displays the mean, minimum, and maximum temperatures and is only visible when their values have been measured.

The following improvements have been made to object measurement scripts:

When defining parameters for object measurement scripts, two new types are offered:

The Required Measurements parameter type can be defined to allow specifying Data and measurement objects that must already be measured in order to successfully run the corresponding object measurement script.

The Additional Measurements parameter type can be defined to allow specifying additional Data and measurement objects that will also be measured when running the corresponding object measurement script.

When these parameters are defined, users can then choose a default value using the adjacent arrow and choosing from the list of Data and measurement objects in the project.

On the shortcut menu of Data and measurement objects, as well as in the Method list box of the Measurement tab of the objects’ property sheet, More has been renamed Manage Macro Scripts.

Both project scripts and favorite scripts are now displayed as measurement methods on the Measurement tab of the object’s property sheet as well as on the object’s shortcut menu.

New fixers have been added to object measurement scripts in the tooltip of icons in the object’s property sheet as well as in the macro script manager.

New or imported scripts are no longer automatically set as favorite. When a project object measurement script is set as favorite, it is automatically added to the user configuration.

The new Assign to Selected Measurement Objects button has been added to the Macro Script dialog box to allow assigning a script to selected objects.

The collision detection functionality is now available when executing the following CNC CMM movements using commands: Scanning, Go to, Change tool orientation and Probe measured.

It is now possible to force the orientation of the tool for some actions during assisted sequencing. When the Optimize measurement sequence mode is activated and the Automatically select tools and tool orientations check box is cleared, these new options are displayed in the Add Objects to Sequence dialog box and in the Tools and Tool Orientations dialog box.

Page 21: © 2019 InnovMetric Software Inc. All rights reserved ... · PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2019 - Release Notes 5 Intermediate Release 4 Intermediate Release 4 General The Chinese, Czech,

The new Tools and Tool Orientations Used when Adding Objects to Sequence button in the Edit Sequence and Measurement Path interactive mode toolbar also displays the Tools and Tool Orientations dialog box when pressed. When the orientation is manually specified, the button changes and also displays the tool and the tool’s orientation.

Two types are offered:

The Use Current option associates the current tool and tool orientation with the object to be added in the sequence.

The Custom option allows selecting the tool and tool orientation to associate with the object to be added in the sequence.

When an I++ CMM device with inferred calibration is used, the A, B, and C angles must be entered separately.

When a selection of objects is added to a measurement sequence, the choice of compatible tool orientations to measure each object has been improved. Collision detection at measurement points is now used, when possible, to choose a compatible tool orientation, which usually results in less orientations being used to measure the object.

In PolyWorks|Inspector, a new command now makes it possible to prevent the user from editing objects in the Tree View or the 3D scene using the right-click and the double-click. This command makes the object’s shortcut menu and properties inaccessible, allowing a user to measure without risking changing the parameters. The command is tied to the user configuration, not the project.

Point features can now be created from minimum and maximum feature deviations. When the point feature is selected in the Create Features dialog box and the From Objects method is chosen, the Feature Min and Max Deviations submethod becomes available. When this submethod is selected, the new Considered feature component list box is displayed in the Parameters section. It allows specifying whether the min and max deviations of the Nominal or the Measured component of features are used to create point features. This property can also be modified on the Dependencies tab of the property sheet of the point features created using this method.

PolyWorks|AR™

The PolyWorks|AR augmented reality solution is a PolyWorks application for the Microsoft HoloLens that allows users to interactively review PolyWorks|Inspector inspection results on the real-world part. By overlaying 3D graphics, such as data-to-CAD deviation color maps, onto the user’s view of the real-world part in the HoloLens, PolyWorks|AR provides hands-free manufacturing feedback that can be especially useful when inspecting larger parts.

The new PolyWorks|AR plug-in has been added to the PolyWorks|Inspector Premium package through the PolyWorks|Inspector Premium add-ons license key. It can be loaded at startup by selecting the Augmented Reality check box on the Plug-ins page of the Workspace Manager Options dialog box.

In order to run PolyWorks|AR, users must:

Have a HoloLens.

Have access to Wi-Fi.

Install two software components:

The HoloLens app: PolyWorks|AR 2019 1.0 for HoloLens

The Model Target Generator Package (8.0.10) for PolyWorks|AR

For more information on installing and setting up PolyWorks|AR, see the PolyWorks|AR Software Releases document. Once PolyWorks|AR is installed and set up, by gazing and using standard HoloLens gestures such as air tapping, users wearing a HoloLens can navigate the PolyWorks|AR user interface to connect to an open PolyWorks|Inspector project and get visual feedback on the real-world part in front of them. But first, the HoloLens must be able to recognize and track the part to provide the user with meaningful visual feedback.

Recognizing and tracking the real-world part in the HoloLens

To use augmented reality technologies in 3D metrology applications, it is fundamental to first be able to recognize and track the real-world part to properly overlay 3D graphics onto the view of the part, providing the user with meaningful visual feedback. Once PolyWorks|AR is installed and set up, the following steps must be completed so that the HoloLens can recognize and track the part:

1. Open the pertinent project in PolyWorks|Inspector. The project must include a CAD model and a color map.

2. Generate the Model Target to be able to recognize and track the real-world part based on its shape. A Model Target is a 2D outline view of the CAD model and is generated using the Vuforia Model Target Generator. The Model Target Generator is launched by choosing the Tools > Plug-ins > Augmented Reality > Launch Model Target Generator menu item in PolyWorks|Inspector. The Model Target can then be generated by following a short procedure and only needs to be generated once if no changes are made to the CAD model. For more information, see the PolyWorks|AR Installation Guide.

3. Open the PolyWorks|AR app on the HoloLens unit and connect to the pertinent PolyWorks|Inspector project.

4. Snap the Model Target to the view of the real-world part by moving the view of the outline over the view of the part.

To be able to recognize and track the real-world part in the HoloLens, two technologies are used. Model-Based Tracking is used to establish the initial snap between the Model Target and the part. A key benefit of the Model-Based Tracking technology is that it does not require the use of targets, however the whole part must be visible from HoloLens cameras. The second technology that is typically used is the HoloLens Inertial tracking/SLAM technology, which automatically repositions the 3D graphics by tracking the user’s movement around the part.

Using PolyWorks|AR

Various toolbar and menu items are offered in PolyWorks|AR that can be used to provide the user wearing the HoloLens with visual feedback on inspection results. Standard HoloLens gestures, such as air tapping, can be applied to navigate the user interface and use functionalities, such as to click a button or to pick color map point annotations.

A main toolbar (shown in (a)) offers the Project, Tools, and Settings items.

Air tapping the Project button displays a toolbar (shown in (b)) that offers an item to refresh a project that is open in PolyWorks|AR, for example for when changes are made for that project in PolyWorks|Inspector. The snap between the Model Target and the part can also be re-established, for example for when the part is moved. Users can also connect to a different project.

Air tapping the Tools button displays a toolbar (shown in (c)) that offers an item to interactively show or hide both the color map and the color scale. Users can also add color map point annotations and show or hide those points. A green check mark icon indicates that a button is selected.

Air tapping the Settings button displays the settings menu (shown in (d)) that allows users to enable the continuous tracking mode. This mode can be used to continuously track a part that is slowly moving.

In this image, the main toolbar (see (a) below) and the Project toolbar (see (b) below) are shown.

Several additions have been made to the search tool over the previous 2018 and 2019 releases to improve how search results are displayed:

Search results used to be limited to 250 pieces. This limit can now be edited using the new Maximum number of results text box. A higher maximum number of pieces will result in a slower search. Conversely, a lower maximum number of pieces will result in a faster search. The default value of 250 pieces offers a good balance between search speed and search results.

The following additions have been made when search results are displayed using the list view:

When opening PolyWorks|Inspector projects, a new Show list box is now offered to specify which pieces are displayed. It is possible to either display pieces included in the selected project or pieces that match the search query.

Columns are offered for standard project and piece properties. If search results include custom properties, columns are also offered for custom properties if their values correspond to the search results.

Major Release

This section presents the new tools included with the PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2019, the latest major release of the PolyWorks Metrology Suite, as well as improvements made to existing tools. It also introduces new collaboration products offered as part of the new PolyWorks Collaborative Suite.

PolyWorks® Metrology Suite

Several changes have been made in the PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2019 major release that apply to more than one module. Additions have been made to the PolyWorks|Inspector™ Standard and Premium packages, including the addition of the new PolyWorks|AR™ augmented reality plug-in to the PolyWorks|Inspector Premium package. A number of tools have been added to the GD&T toolset in order to comply with the ISO GPS standard. Object measurement scripts can now be created to integrate scripted measurement methods into standard PolyWorks workflows, providing highly customizable measurement solutions. Users can also easily create an optimized measurement path in a fraction of the time by simply selecting the desired objects and adding them to a measurement sequence—all while keeping the measurement path collision-free. A description of these changes, as well as of other new tools and improvements, is provided in the following sections.

Addition to the PolyWorks|Inspector Standard package

The PolyWorks|Inspector Standard package now includes real-time quality meshing—a technology that helps improve the quality of the scans. When Data points are acquired using real-time quality meshing, they are meshed, and quality metrics can be activated to provide feedback on the quality of the scans. Low-quality areas can then be rescanned to obtain better data.

Additions to the PolyWorks|Inspector Premium package

New add-ons are now offered and have been added to the PolyWorks|Inspector Premium package through the new PolyWorks|Inspector Premium add-ons license key.

PolyWorks|AR™ for the Microsoft® HoloLens

The PolyWorks|AR augmented reality solution is a PolyWorks application for the Microsoft HoloLens that allows users to interactively review PolyWorks|Inspector inspection results on the real-world part. By overlaying 3D graphics, such as data-to-CAD deviation color maps, onto the user’s view of the real-world part in the HoloLens, PolyWorks|AR provides hands-free manufacturing feedback that can be especially useful when inspecting larger parts.

This plug-in will officially be released along with the Intermediate Release 1.0 of the PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2019. Users who have a HoloLens and are interested in using the PolyWorks|AR plug-in are invited to contact InnovMetric Software Inc.

End of 32-bit support with PolyWorks® 2020

InnovMetric is dropping support for 32-bit versions of its PolyWorks products. PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2019 will be the last major release to offer a 32-bit version, with continued support up to Intermediate Release 12, planned for May 2020.

Maintaining development tools for the 32-bit platform is becoming increasingly difficult, as several software component suppliers have already ceased support for 32-bit versions of their products, such as NVIDIA and AMD, or have announced they would do so shortly. This change enables InnovMetric to dedicate valuable engineering resources to the development of new features, enhancements, and products based on the 64-bit platform.

Starting with PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2020, all future major and intermediate releases will only be offered in a 64-bit version. While most PolyWorks plug-ins already run in 64-bit, the Romer GDS Arm and G-Scan/R-Scan plug-ins will be adapted to run in 64-bit.

If you have any concerns or questions related to the end of 32-bit support for PolyWorks, feel free to contact InnovMetric at: [email protected]

Major Release

PolyWorks|Inspector™

This section presents various changes made in the PolyWorks® Metrology Suite 2019 major release that apply to PolyWorks|Inspector.

GD&T improvements for the ISO GPS standard

Several improvements have been made in order to comply with the ISO GPS standard, some of which were released in previous 2018 intermediate releases. New median line technology now makes it possible to calculate GD&T results based on feature median lines instead of feature axes and has enabled important additions. New rank-order size modifiers have been added to calculate specific measurements when using the Local Diameter GD&T tool.

Display of the median line

The median line is an important part of GD&T calculations, but it is an internal construction that is invisible to the user. To allow the user to better understand its results, and for troubleshooting purposes, it is now possible to display the median line.

Right-clicking a control in the Geometry Controls pane and choosing Create Features > From Median Line creates one or more feature primitives from the median line of the selected GD&T control. This item is available for the controls of cylinder features.

A polyline representing the calculated median line is created and displayed in the 3D scene. In the tree view, the default naming scheme includes - median line.

Major Release

Controls for cylinders calculated according to the median line

GD&T controls for the orientation (i.e., perpendicularity, angularity, and parallelism), position, and coaxiality of cylinders can now be calculated using the cylinder’s median line. The median line can be calculated for all types of data, including sparse datasets. However, if there is not enough data, the cylinder’s measured axis is used.

Two-point size method and rank-order size modifiers

The two-point size method is now supported when using the Local Diameter GD&T tool.

This method consists in measuring multiple two-point diameters. These results provide critical information, such as the smallest diameter value, which can highlight problematic areas.

By default, the two-point size method is used and no modifier is selected in the first list box of the new Modifiers column. However, the (LP) modifier associated with the two-point size method can optionally be specified.

New rank-order size modifiers have been added to calculate specific measurements when using the Local Diameter GD&T tool. The (SX), (SN), (SA), (SM), and (SD) rank-order modifiers can now be specified in the second list box of the new Modifiers column.

The (SX) or (SN) modifier is automatically added based on the in-space orientation of the circle feature.

All the modifiers specified in the Modifiers list boxes are applied to both the upper and lower tolerances.

Plane and cone DRF calculations

Plane and cone datum features in DRF calculations now use Chebyshev fits, also known as the Minimax fit method.

Scripted measurement methods

Users can now integrate scripted measurement methods into their standard PolyWorks workflow. The new object measurement scripts, which are embedded in measurement objects, can be used to highly customize measurement solutions by creating scripted measurement methods that can easily be reused for other projects.

To display the new Macro Scripts dialog box, users can choose the Tools > Macro Scripts > Manage Macro Scripts menu item. The dialog box is also available from the Sequence Editor pane using the Tools menu.

In addition, the Macro Scripts dialog box can be displayed using the object’s property sheet by choosing the More item in the new Scripts section. This item is offered in the Method list box on the Measurement tab. The More item is also offered on the object’s shortcut menu in the tree view.

The Macro Scripts dialog box offers various tools to create and manage object measurement scripts.

Two different types of macro scripts can be created: object measurement scripts and macro scripted operations that are inserted into a measurement sequence. These items can be selected in the Script type list box in the top left corner of the dialog box.

Buttons in the bottom left corner of the dialog box allow the user to create, duplicate, import, export, edit, and delete macro scripts. When creating, importing, duplicating, and editing macro scripts, the Macro Script Editor is automatically displayed to allow users to make the necessary changes.

The macro scripts are displayed in the list area above these tools. A star is displayed next to each macro script, allowing users to select their favorites. Hovering the mouse pointer over a script displays a tooltip with the name of the objects for which that script is used for measurement.

The tools offered on the right side of the Macro Scripts dialog box allow users to give the new macro script a name and description, as well as add more information to define custom parameters that are easily editable by users. Other tools allow users to manage parameter definitions.

Other improvements

Converting workspaces that contain external files

Workspaces that were last saved using PolyWorks 2017 or earlier could not be converted to the new workspace format, which was introduced with PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2018, if they contained external files that were missing. External files first had to be recovered using PolyWorks 2017 or earlier.

It is now possible to open and convert workspaces that contain external files. Once the workspace is opened, the dialog box shown to the right is displayed to specify the path to external files.

Once the path to all external files is specified, the workspace is converted to the new workspace format, and files are no longer external to the workspace. Note that if the workspace is opened in read-only mode and is not converted, the path to external files is not saved.

CMM plug-ins

This section presents changes made in the PolyWorks® Metrology Suite 2019 major release that apply to CMM plug-ins.

Probe head angles using the Zeiss convention

The I++ CMM and Zeiss CMM-OS plug-ins now support the Zeiss CMM hardware convention for the A, B, and C angles.

Therefore, if the Zeiss head check box is selected on the General tab of the probing device properties, values applied and displayed for tool orientations in both new and existing projects now reflect the Zeiss CMM hardware convention. The C angle can now also be selected when applicable.

Note the following:

This change has no effect on the nominal orientation of tool orientation steps in a measurement sequence.

When transitioning from PolyWorks 2018 to PolyWorks 2019, no action is required as the appropriate convention is automatically applied to all angle values. Following this transition, however, angle limit values and steps should be verified on the General tab of the Probing Device Properties dialog box.

A message is displayed to remind I++ CMM and Zeiss CMM-OS users that the Zeiss CMM hardware convention is now supported. This message is displayed when the check box is selected and the PolyWorks Metrology Suite 2019 is opened for the first time. The message is also displayed when opening existing projects, created prior to the 2019 major release, that contain a measurement sequence. Pressing the Details button provides more information and possible actions.
