once each summer, at a number of sites inmany of the states with a history of logging,

communities and audiences gather to watch log-ging (sometimes referred to as lumber jack or tim-ber jack) shows, enjoying the skill, strength andspeed of the athletes competing in a smorgasbordof events from tree climbing, to axe throwing, sin-gle and doubles on cross cut saws, just to name afew. Each is a bit different as logging in each re-gion is a bit different in elevation, timber types, and some of the equipment in use at the shows (forinstance a cross-cut saw from the Midwestern sec-tion of the country uses a heavier gage of metalthan the West coast cross cut saws).

fifty years ago the deming Log Show arrivedwith the goal of raising money to help out “bustedup loggers” by putting on a demonstration of eventsthat local loggers do on a daily basis, which starteda tradition and spirit that thrives to this day.

a lot goes into such a show, including a greatdeal of planning and scores of people involved inanywhere from a few to a number of various com-mittees that have the deming Show Grounds in topshape from each of the structures, to maintenance, arranging for trees in use at competitions, bring infresh (and cold) water to fill the log rolling ponds,to judges for the events to name a few.

a large part of the deming log show’s successcomes from “the deming Spirit” of cooperation andattention to completing the many tasks withoutconcern for who gets credit. it was that spirit, which encouraged the older generation (whose en-ergy and dedication created the show) to bring in“new blood” to replenish and evolve with time tokeep the show fresh, open to change, and transitioncleanly and easily to the new generation’s leader-ship. transitions can be very painful, and has beenthe downfall of many businesses, civic organiza-tions, and families.

We’ve been fortunate enough to see the leader-ship at the deming Log Show change over the pasthalf of it’s lifetime, and attribute the success to the

clear vision of the “dem-ing Spirit” from the timetoday’s leadership werejust pups, where theoriginal goal of helping“busted up loggers” pre-vails, and the kudos goto the entire group.

it’s no small taskpassing the torch gener-ation to generationwithout a firm vision, aclear goal, and commit-

ment to pass along the qualities, values and stan-dards we hold dear. to have embraced this plat-inum standard, and demonstrated over time ourpledge to its future allows us to pass this gift onthrough time.

happy 50th anniversary deming Log Show.Embrace it, improve it, and pass it on.

Special interests

long ago we were taught if you’re trying to findout what’s going on, especially in politics and

business, to follow the money. Common sense, yes,but part of what makes common sense particularlyunique (it would seem especially so at this point intime) is how vary rarely we see common sense inpractice.

once upon a time political season (that is, orwas, the few months prior to elections) could bemeasured in months, whereas at present cam-paigning has become a full time mission of manyoffice holders and seekers. the focus has shiftedfrom actually doing the job you’re elected for to acheerleader schmoozing with whatever outlet onecan to get your name in front, and leaving yourrecord to whomever is involved with publicity.

anyone in business, which is to say anyone notemployed by government, or on some form of gov-ernmentally funded program, has been the conve-nient target labeled as a “special interest” with theimplication that interest is contrary to the “public”good. as the reasoning goes, business is about prof-it and profit, it’s implied, comes at someone’s ex-pense.

it’s easier to take a bite out of this reasoningwhen you set aside that being in business comeswith some risk, which you (and perhaps your in-vestors) take with the hope of making not only aliving, but making better than a living as a reward(or the incentive) for taking that risk. Business isnot easy, and it’s not guaranteed, which is a driv-ing force for one to work more innovatively, more

efficiently, and constantly seek a better way to sat-isfy your client’s needs.

however “special interests” exist well beyondthe business realm, in spite of non-business enti-ties insistence that they operate for “our” good. re-ality and paying some attention to the political pro-cesses, reveals there are a number of non-businessentities whose focus certainly have the trappings oftheir own self-interest.

We reside in Washington State, which has had avery strong and growing public employees unionfor decades, and who is very involved in the elec-tion process, as is their right. the past few weeksthey’ve sponsored a radio advertising campaignthat claims the state senate has eliminated a num-ber of “tax loop holes” that will cost our children bydenying them funding for education, all in the pub-lic interest, of course. rubbish.

Shall we call a spade a spade? the Public Em-ployees union is a special interest, just as are theother union entities. they are a very special inter-est above and beyond non-public unions in thatshould the union at ford, Boeing, or other corpo-rate entities overstep in their negotiations and con-tribute to their companies eventual demise, theunion’s source of income vanishes with the busi-ness... a very BiG difference.

Most that see and read our publication areacutely aware of the economic frailties of the pastsix years, which have resulted in downsizing, tight-ening the belt, reorganization, tighter margins, while watching other business close shop or moveto a more business friendly climate. during thissame time frame “our” government and govern-ment employees have at worst been inconve-nienced, and at best not really noticed any changein their lifestyle whatsoever because they’ve essen-tially continued on with raises, benefits, vacations, etc.

While business had to react or perish in themidst of plummeting revenue streams, reducing ex-penses, and seeking new opportunities, in thisstate (we have reason to believe others as well) con-tinues along with business as usual, ignoring thatparadigms have changed. how dare we object totaxes! the state’s work force needs to grow!

While the prattle on the radio implies sharplythat it is “business greed” that’s at play in trying toreduce business taxes, we’d suggest that while theevidence for special interests greed is indeed pre-sent, the truely special interest is not business.

follow the cost of administration, the growth ofstaff, benefits, pay, retirment, perks... follow themoney.

during the early years of ken-worth's 90-year history it was

said that "kenworth EngineersWear Muddy Boots."

"the Muddy Boots name symbol-ized that kenworth engineers andsalespeople weren't afraid to go inthe field, crawl under trucks and getdirty. as we celebrate kenworth's90th anniversary, we see history re-peating itself.  We still get our bootsmuddy and work closely with cus-tomers to see how kenworth canbuild a better truck to meet theirneeds," said alan fennimore, ken-worth's vocational marketing man-ager.

Stories and pictures remind thecompany of its past. according tokenworth's early archives, "ken-worth engineers had earned a repu-tation for solving problems in thefield, often driving trucks or inspect-ing them in the middle of a muddyroad for signs of failure. John holm-strom (then kenworth chief engi-neer and later the company's gener-al manager) would routinely visitlogging sites, crawling underneathvehicles and making notes on how toimprove truck design to better with-stand the rugged conditions."

kenworth engineers would go outin the mud and visit truck

fleets.  this photo from the 1920s isof kenworth trucks operated by theholroyd Company of tacoma, Wash.

Vernon Smith, who began a 30-year career as kenworth's vice pres-ident and sales manager in 1923,traveled to hawaii in the mid-1930sand trod through muddy sugar canefields in search of new business."Smith found that sugar cane wasbeing hauled by rail over temporarytracks laid in muddy fields.  he toldthe plantation owners that ken-worth engineers could come up witha better solution - gas-powered, highload capacity six-wheel drive canetrucks - quite a feat for that era.  hegot the order on the promise andwithin 10 years, kenworth truckswere being used in 13 of the 14 sug-ar plantations."

Shown is kenworth vice presi-dent and sales manager VernonSmith (back, at center of load) witha kenworth sugar cane hauler onthe island of oahu in hawaii in1936.

John Czarniecki, one of ken-worth's engineers, was quoted in the1998 book "kenworth - the first 75Years," as saying: "this group wasvery capable and always able to riseto the occasion.  no matter what theproblem, we could still solve it.  i

think it was because we had an openmind and were willing to talk toeach other."

Early in kenworth's history it be-came said that "kenworth engineerswear muddy boots"as kenworth en-gineers were known for gainingfirst-hand experience of conditionsin the field by getting their bootsdirty during visits to truck fleet op-erations. this photo was taken inthe 1930s for an early kenworthbrochure.

today, challenges still exist, espe-cially in the vocational market, where kenworth offers a wide rangeof Class 8 vocational trucks, includ-ing the C500, k500 cabover, t800,t880, W900S, W900L and the 963."Competition is fierce for our cus-tomers, particularly in construction,so if they can make more money us-ing our product, then they're aheadof the curve. our job is to under-stand what they need, and figureout how to spec it.  that way, we'llboth come out on top," said fenni-more.

Building upon that illustrious,well-earned motto is kenworth'sMuddy Boots academy, an intensivethree-day 'boot camp' trainingcourse for kenworth dealer sales-people which prepares them to work

with customers in vocations rangingfrom quarries and mining to con-struction, heavy haul and mixers.during the course, kenworth sales-people learn more about customers'vocational and equipment needs, and are updated on various regula-tory restrictions.

Shown are kenworth dealer salesparticipants at the kenworth Mud-dy Boots academy held at the PaC-Car Engine Company in Columbus,Miss., in 2012.

"it's not just about how to sell atruck anymore," said fennimore."Salespeople need to know a myriadof federal and local regulations, beable to do calculations for bridge for-mula and proper vehicle weight dis-tribution, use creative spec'ing, andunderstand new technologies thatwe're always bringing to the table.those kenworth dealer salespeoplewho go through the course comeaway appreciating our Muddy Bootsheritage and how kenworth has al-ways worked with customers to bet-ter their operations."

kenworth's ongoing Muddy Bootsphilosophy throughout its 90-yearhistory would certainly bring asmile to kenworth legends VernonSmith and John holmstrom.

have you ever considered theeffort made by some people to

avoid work? think about it for aminute or two. there are millionsof able bodied people who go out oftheir way to sidestep being produc-tive and carrying their own weight.

i’m not referring to just the “lazyslugs” out there, i’m talking aboutavoidance of anything that breaksa sweat! While i’ll confess tosidestepping tasks that i don’t par-ticularly like to do, eventually i getaround to the chore as i hear mydad’s voice in my ear saying, “…ifyou do the hard work first and getit out of the way, you’ll alwayshave time to do what you want”.

i’m kind of thinking the Legisla-ture should follow the suggestion ofmy dear old dad. it would save thetaxpayers money and avoid specialsessions that are becoming morethe “rule” than the “exception”!

heading into the 2013 sessionand screaming like a Banshee wasthe budget deficit. Every lawmak-

er, whether in the Senate or thehouse, knew the primary issuewould be developing and passing abalanced budget. Because this is noeasy task, they kicked the candown the road for 105 days and in-stead, worked to pass legislationlike the ‘serving beer and wine inmovie theaters’ bill. this is abso-lute genius and will work well withthe feds plan to change the legalintoxication level to .05.; perfect forlaw enforcement who can park inthe mall lot, bust the tipplers com-ing out of the show, load ‘em in thepaddy-wagon, decrease the numberof duis issued and practicallyeliminate drunk-driving crashes allthe while sparing the outrageousfuel costs of car chases! this istrumped only by SB 5774 authoriz-ing applications for a special per-mit allowing “alcohol tasting” bypersons nineteen and twenty yearsof age under certain circumstances!“Certain circumstances” include“tasting but not swallowing” bystudents enrolled in culinary class-es, beer or wine technology or a

“spirituous technology-related” de-gree program. am i concernedabout this bill? not really, as ithink 100% of nineteen and twentyyear olds who want to taste liquormay not have the legality to do so,but, you can bet they have themeans.

My point in even mentioningthis is as an example of billsbirthed, while the budget deficit isstill in labor. roughly 400 billspassed and have either been signedinto law or are awaiting the signa-ture of the Governor. those refer-enced here for example are amongthe 400. of course, there were hun-dreds more introduced, that werestuffed in a gunny-sack anddropped off a bridge never seeingthe light of day. Many of the billsare repetitious of past legislationthat needs to be enforced not re-written.

i believe supporting or introduc-ing a bill for consideration is a leg-islative means of proving to con-stituents they are “nose-to-the-grindstone and working”. i view it

as a waste of valuable time thatcould be spent on … yup, the peskybudget! this session there seemsto be more contention between par-ties as noted in public whining inthe Senate and refusal to work inconcert across the aisle. Meanwhilethe special session has commencedand the time-clock is ticking. twoyears ago the cost of the specialsession was around $300,000 andpredicted to be much greater thistime around. (keep in mind alsothat Governor inslee emigratedfrom the “other Washington” whereCongress hasn’t passed a budgetsince 2009!)

the bell for round two hassounded and i’m hopeful the elect-ed conclave isn’t scared of “hardwork”, but i don’t want them to beso fearless they lie right down nextto it and nap!

rob Gordon is adept at puttingout a lot of different fires. as

the co-owner and sole operator ofGordon Enterprises, he hauls logsand rock with a long logger and self-loader and dirt and aggregate with adump truck. When the call comes,he also drives a fire truck or ambu-lance as a volunteer firefighter.

Gordon Enterprises was startedby rob’s father, robert C. Gordon asa sole proprietorship with a dumptruck back in 1985. Before passingaway unexpectedly from a brain tu-mor in 2006, robert hauled rock forthe Centralia Mining Company, anda variety of local logging and con-struction contractors. he also was avolunteer fire fighter.

after his passing, robert’s sonsrob, ryan and Jon looked at theiroptions, and rather than breakingup the equipment that was left, which included two dump trucks, pup trailer, tilt deck trailer and aCat, they opted to form a companyof their own. rob works full-time asa forester for Long View timber, and the Jon has a full-time job forholbrook Logging in the tacoma logyard. rob took on the responsibilityof running the show. during thesummers, the brothers will do some

little logging jobs and rob will behauling the wood.

rob had gotten his CdL when hewas 16, but trucking wasn’t so muchin his future plans. after gradua-tion, he enrolled at WashingtonState university to study engineer-ing. his goal was to eventually getinto transportation, roadway pro-

ROB PuT THE ’77 KENWORTH together thispast spring. He also decided to make it into afifth-wheel for the times that he might want tohook up to a flatbed or lowboy trailer.

jects. the only problem was themath requirement.

While at WSu, rob also drovetruck on a farm outside of Colton,Washington. his dad had offered tolet him drive one of the dumptrucks, but he decided to stay wherethe money was instead.

“When my dad passed away ilooked at what i enjoyed doing, andat the time that was driving truckand farming,” rob says. “i thoughtthat trucking might be my calling, and i felt that if that was somethingi was going to do, this was going tobe my best opportunity because wealready had the equipment as wellas the contracts and the support of

the contractors.”rob came back to the Lewis

Country and picked up where hisdad had left off. one of the firstthings he did was to completely re-build robert’s dump truck to makeit more reliable. a sticker on thehood reads, “in memory of my dad”for a project that robert always in-tended to do.

“When i began driving the truck,i went into the rock pit and the ladyin the office pretty much fell off herchair because i sounded so muchlike my dad on the radio,” he recalls.

in the spring of 2009, rob boughta used Weyerhaeuser truck at auc-tion. When he bought the truck, the

brothers contemplated making it in-to another dump truck.

“at that time, it was very hard forlog truckers to make any money andfind jobs,” rob says. “the price ofwood was down, and a lot of truckswere just parked. the ones for salewere going very cheap.”

the first thing that rob did wasto paint the truck, to hide the Wey-erhaeuser yellow. he got really busyover the summer, and by the timehe got around to messing with thetruck in the fall, he happened acrossa used self-loader to put on thetruck. it seemed like it would be agood fit to help with some of the lit-tle logging jobs the brothers were

doing from time to time. “We’d hire self-loaders to come

and get the wood, but we found thatthey were making more money outof the job than we were,” rob says.“We didn’t have any intention ofrunning our own self-loader full-time, but we figured that just run-ning it occasionally, it would pay foritself.”

the ironic thing, though, wasthat about the time rob got the logtruck up and running, people start-ed calling him to haul their wood.

GORDON’s 1978 359 PETERBIlT, was factory-ordered as a dumptruck with a steel severe service cab, but Rob recently changed thatout to an aluminum cab because of rust issues. The truck has a 14-yard Better-Weigh box and has been upgraded with new fuel tanks, air cleaners, lED lights and drop visor to make it look presentable af-ter years of service.

ROB GORDON AT WORK on theself-loader. The truck is a 1992 Ken-worth T800 outfitted with Peerlessbunk gear and trailer. The truck isequipped with an N14 step-timingcontrol Cummins motor, 13-speedtransmission, sI scales and Ds402two-speed Eaton rear ends. Robwent with a walking beam ratherthan airbag suspension because hefeels that airbag, especially in off-road conditions, have a propensityto cause spin out because theydon’t float with the ground as well.“The airbag may ride nice,” Robsays, “but I don’t think they getnear the traction.”

As for asimilarity between driv-ing dump trucks and logtrucks and emergencyvehicles, Rob says thefire engine, carrying2,500 gallons of water, and is just like drivingany other heavily loadedvehicle. “Even thoughit’s an emergency vehi-cle, you still have to treatit as a commercial vehi-cle and you need to fol-low the typical drivingsafety rules.”

By darin Burt

Zac brooks named his companyBrooks & Son trucking in hopes

that one day it would be a familybusiness. of course, little Cody isjust four years old, so that day hegets his CdL is still a ways off.

2013 marks Zac’s third year in loghauling, but he’s been around log-ging and trucking since he was ateenager. he started out as a me-chanic from the time he was 18,working for Woodland Expansionand a number of local loggers. as hegot into doing union jobs, the worktook him away form his wife andson, and he felt it would be better todo something that would keep himcloser to home. a couple of friendsadvised him to buy a truck, and sohe did.

Zac proceeded to build a 1989 Pe-terbilt 379 glider kit that he pickedup at an auction. Being a mechanic,he was able to easily install the en-gine, rear ends, transmission, andbasically put it together from theground up.

Going into log hauling, wasn’tsomething that Zac did simply on awhim. “i saw a real need,” he says.“there are always loggers complain-ing about not having trucks, and isaw it as something that would keepme close to home. i had talked toSPi, because they control most ofthe hauling in our area, and we

signed a contract and got it all linedup. as soon i got the truck finished,i went to work the very next day.”

“My wife Leanne is my rock,” Zacsays. “She helps me out with everylittle thing. Last year, when i blew atransmission, she was right therehelping me rebuild it. She’s in thisthing just as much as i am.”

today, rob is driving a 2002 Pe-terbilt 379 extended hood. he saysit’s his dream truck. “the 379 ex-tended hood has always been thebest looking truck to me. it’s aCanadian truck and it was just im-maculate. a buddy of mine had it,and he is a freak about keepingthings nice.”

the truck is equipped with a 600hp Cat motor, 18-speed transmis-sion, super-40 double lockers, 3/8”frame, electric scales and a 2000hassell conventional log trailer.

Certainly, as a long time mechan-ic, Zac knows how to keep a truck intip-top condition. “You’ve got tospend a lot of time with your truck –as my wife likes to say, ‘You’re mar-ried to it,’” he says. “i’m religiousabout greasing the truck weekly andchanging oil every 10,000 miles. ifyou don’t treat your equipment rightit’s not going to perform for you.”

Zac is also an advocate of the val-ue of oil sampling. “if you’ve got a

motor with half a million miles, anoil sample can tell you if somethingis going wrong,” he says. “Last year,i ran a sample and i had a little bitof copper in the oil. i pulled mycrank and there was a bearingabout ready to spin. it saved thingsfrom being catastrophic and ruiningthe crank. i just put in new bearingsand went back to work.”

When Zac bought his currenttruck it had nearly 600,000 miles onthe motor. one of the first thingsthat he did was add a performancechip from diesel freaks. the partcost only a couple hundred dollarsand was a simple install, and now

the fuel mileage has increased from5 to nearly 6 miles a gallon. Beingthat Zac works for SPi on a hourlybasis, the better fuel mileage heget’s the more money he can put inhis pocket.

“Being an owner-operator bridgedthe gap between being in the woodsand wrenching on this for me. i’vespent so much time in the shop that, honestly, i wasn’t sure how i wasgoing to handle sitting in the truck.i pretty much already knew the rou-tine, but i learned most everythingas i went along,” Zac says.

“i really like the log hauling,” headds. “it’s turned into somethingthat i really enjoy doing. it reallyworks for me and my family.”

he did that through the winter, andcome springtime, he was still at it.

it was about that time that con-struction work flattened out, so robjust parked the dump truck andkept hauling logs. for the last threeyears, he figures he’s averaged 400loads a year with the self-loader.

“there had been a lot of self-load-ers around, but in 2007-2009 time-frame, a lot of guys took them offtheir truck and sold them becausethere was no work for them,” he ex-plains. “i stepped into it at the righttime by accident and it has workedout very well.”

Eager Beaver Cutting, out ofGrand Mound, and M&M Logging, out of Curtis are two of Gordon’smain customers. rob not only haulslogs with the self-loader, but alsomoves equipment with the dumptruck and tilt deck, and also rockslogging roads and landings.

during this past winter, rob alsoput together a long logger. “Webought the truck out of Port ange-les, and it was the same truck that iused to drive when i was going toWSu. a year ago, i was with my for-mer boss, at a ritchie Bros. auction, and he told me that they were goingto be selling it for scrap becausethey’d blown the engine and weren’tinterested in fixing it because it wasan old 1977 model. he told me if iwanted it to come and get it,” robrecalls.

the truck was missing its engineand transmission. rob had alreadystarted building a new engine theprevious summer knowing he wouldbe getting the truck. he also decidedto make it into a fifth-wheel for thetimes that he might want to hook upto a flatbed or lowboy trailer.

as it happened, one of the con-tractors that rob was working forbought a loader and wasn’t going tobe needing the services of the self-loader any more. he still needed thelogs hauled though, and he offered

the job to rob who set his truck upas a quick-change so he could easilyswitch it from fifth-wheel to longlogger.

“i don’t really have the intentionsof going out and hauling for a lot ofdifferent people with the long log-ger; i just want to keep the cus-tomers that i have going happy,”rob says.

“it’s always a task of jugglingloads,” he adds. “i have a difficulttime turning down work. i try tokeep everybody caught up andpleased, but sometimes that’s notcompletely possible. in the last year, construction has started to comeback and i’ve actually turned downsome of that work because the rateshaven’t come back.

“i’ve got work that i can be doing(with log hauling), and i’d just aswell see people who aren’t workingtry and get back on their feet, so itend to step out a little more.”

“one of the nice things abouthauling for my two logging contrac-tors, is that they understand that attimes i can make more money withmy dump truck, and they are willingto keep me on when i do other jobs.”

Even with all the options, robsays the realities of the different in-dustries can be frustrating becausehe can see in his books that he canmake the same amount of moneywith the dump truck in a seven toeight month period as he does work-ing all year long with the self-load-er.

rob’s ultimate goal is to be moreself-sufficient. “there’s no way tocompletely get away with that, butas some of the contractors get older, you’re not sure who’s going to re-place them – it might be larger con-tractors that don’t need to hiretrucks,” he says. “having the varietyof trucks gives me options to go andfind work if the industries are in alow. the nice thing about our equip-ment is, while it might be older, it’sall paid for.”

at times, rob says it can be achallenge being a one-man show. But over juggling jobs and mainte-nance chores, is the frustration ofkeeping up with all the rules andregulations. “Every time i turnaround, i find something new orthat i’ve never heard about in the 10years i’ve been driving a truck,” hesays.

as if he wasn’t busy enough, robserves as the assistant Chief of theBucoda fire department and theMaintenance officer for Gibson Val-ley overseeing the maintenance pro-gram for three fire trucks, watertender, three ambulances, twobrush trucks and a pair of commandvehicles.

Luckily, while trucking is busiestduring the summertime, fire callsseem to be more prevalent duringthe middle of the winter withdowned power lines, car wrecks onicy roads, and chimney and housefires. ninety percent of the calls towhich the fire department respondsare medically related. rob oftendrives the ambulance, fire truck andwater tender.

as for a similarity between driv-ing dump trucks and log trucks andemergency vehicles, rob says thepumper truck at Gibson Valley is akenworth t800 pumper-tender car-rying 2,500 gallons of water and isjust like driving any other heavilyloaded vehicle. the water in thetank is baffled to prevent it fromshifting.

“Even though it’s an emergencyvehicle, you still have to treat it as acommercial vehicle,” adds rob, whohas also been tasked with teachingother volunteers to drive the equip-ment, “and you need to follow thetypical driving safety rules.

the majority of the emergency ve-hicles are automatics. a good thingas many of the new volunteers arehigh school and college age or re-tirees looking for something to keepthem active. Many of the younger

kids, especially, have never drivenanything larger than a honda. “Wedo spend a lot of time with themmaking sure that they are safe inthe vehicles and are making appro-priate decisions,” rob says. “the fireguys, who do wreck, are those witha lack of experience or comfort inthe vehicle because they are not get-ting as much seat time as a regularcommercial driver.”

“i’ve never had any desire to dothe fire service as a career,” robsays, “But i do like helping the com-munity. What drove that was themechanical side; i just like trucks.”

rob feels a positive commitmentto serving the community. he alsosees a solid future in log and rockhauling.

“i don’t see us getting out of thetrucking,” he says, “But it’s hard tosay which truck i’ll be in more. We’lllikely just go more to where the in-dustry climate takes us.”

“ i think dad would be excited tosee what we’ve got going on now,and that we’re staying afloat in thetrucking industry, whether it be log-ging or dump trucking,” rob adds.“he’d probably think we were crazy, though, with four trucks.”

Engine treatment helpsclean older engines

rislone offers an Engine treat-ment Concentrate that is designedto keep aging engines clean.

size and weight limits to the en-tire  national highway System(nhS) and will also ban the use oftriple trailer rigs on the entirenhS.

Lautenberg’s bill, the “Safe high-ways and infrastructure Preserva-tion act of 2013” (ShiPa), would ap-ply the current limits of 80,000 lbs.and maximum length of 53 ft. fortractor-trailer trucks  to theentire nhS, while still allowing cer-tain exemptions, including for fire-fighting equipment.

the nhS includes both interstatehighways and smaller nationalhighways.  Most truck size andweight restrictions already apply tothe 44,000-mi. interstate highwaySystem. the bill would extend cer-tain restrictions to the much big-ger 220,000-mi. nhS. the bill willalso expand the current freeze oftriple-tractor trailer operations oninterstates to apply to the broadernhS. in addition, the bill wouldclose loopholes that allow the opera-tion of overweight trucks and wouldestablish an enforcement programto ensure accountability.

“When super-sized tractor-trail-ers are on the road, they are a

threat to drivers and the integrity ofour highways and bridges,” Lauten-berg said. “Closing the loophole thatkeeps these long, overweight truckson our national highway Systemwill protect families and preserveour nation’s infrastructure.  trucksplay a critical role in our nation’seconomy, but they also share theroads with our families, so we mustdo everything we can to make ournation’s highways safer and preventtragic accidents.  this is thoughtful,common-sense legislation thatwould maintain our highways, growour economy, and ensure safe roadsfor commuters and families.”

the bill is supported by Citizens

Joan Claybrook, former administra-tor of the national highway trafficSafety administration and chair ofCraSh.  “the Senator’s introduc-tion of the Safe highways and in-frastructure Preservation act, which will freeze current truck sizeand weight limits, will lead towardsaving countless lives and prevent-ing lifelong debilitating injuries formany.  Sen. Lautenberg continuesto ‘fight the good fight’ to improveour nation’s truck safety policies, and the american public will bespared from paying with their livesand their wallets because of his ef-forts.”

Bigger trucks — both those thatare heavier and longer than stan-dard trucks — present safety risks, including longer stopping distances, increased risks of rollover and oftrailers swaying into adjacent lanes,Lautenberg said in a press release.“research shows that a 100,000-lb.truck with unadjusted brakes trav-els 25% further after the driver

steps on the brakes than an 80,000-lb. truck.  Large trucks account for adisproportionately high share ofdeaths based on miles traveled com-pared to standard vehicle traffic.”

Lautenberg also wrote the lawthat banned triple-trailers (which herefers to as “killer trucks”) in newJersey and on most other states’roads.

Keep your dirty truck outof Canada

driving a dirty, mud-caked rig?You may want to wash it down, thatis if you plan to cross the border intoCanada.

the Canadian Boarder Servicesagency is barring entry to trucksthat it deems too dirty in accordancewith the Canadian food inspectionagency’s regulations prohibiting theimportation of soil into the country.

Several drivers and truck opera-tors based in Maine last week toldthe Maine Sun Journal they havebeen turned back at either the Clairor Edmundston, new Brunswick, ports of entry.

“the importation of soil intoCanada is generally prohibited be-cause regulated quarantine plant

pests can travel in soil,” Elena kout-savakis, media relations with theCanadian food inspection agency, said. “these invasive pests are oftennot easily visible to the naked eyeand can hitch a ride in the soil un-der people’s vehicles.”

“Vehicles found to be contaminat-ed with soil may be refused entryunder the authority of the [Canadi-an] Plant Protection act,” kout-savakis said.

“all vehicles should be clean andfree of soil and soil-related matter[such as] muck, earthworm castings, leaf litter prior to arriving in Cana-da,” koutsavakis said. “Soil is ahigh-risk pathway for regulatedquarantine pests [such as] potatocyst nematodes that can cause seri-ous harm to Canada’s natural re-sources.”

it makes no difference what partof the u.S. the vehicle is comingfrom, koutsavakis said. “all vehiclesshould be clean and free of soil andsoil-related matter prior to arrivingin Canada.”

App monitors distracteddriving

A smartphone application no-tifies managers when drivers use

company-provided mobile devices totext, talk or check emails and socialmedia while driving.

Corporate Canary is available forboth iPhone and android operatingsystems, according to developer Ca-nary Project.

in addition to tracking handhelddevice use in a moving vehicle, theapplication can also monitor vehiclespeed.  it can be configured to moni-tor employees only during businesshours.

reports accessed via an onlinedashboard show the time and loca-tion of each violation of companydistracted-driving policies. Man-agers can also choose to receivedownloadable reports on a daily orweekly basis.

Corporate Canary carries an an-nual subscription fee as low as $1.99per user, according to thedeveloper.  Monthly subscriptionplans and volume discounts are alsoavailable.
