Issues affecting upland glaciated areas
In the UK there are currently two main issues affecting upland glaciated areas:
Over 80% of Wales is designated as a Less Favoured Area for farming which means that the physical landscape makes farming more challenging. Added to this, recent years have seen the reduction in subsidies on account of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the loss of confidence in farming as a result of BSE and Foot and Mouth in 2001. Across the whole of the UK, 18,000 farmers and workers lost their jobs in 2002.
Tourist numbers are increasing. For example, 10.5 million people visited Snowdonia and 20 million visited the Lake District in 2001. Many come on day trips but others stay overnight or for longer. Some even buy second homes!

Key ideas
Pastoral farming is traditionally the main land use in upland glaciated areas such as the Lake District and Snowdonia.
Other land uses include: water supply, energy production, forestry, transport and tourist facilities including skiing.
The main issues affecting upland glaciated areas are the decline in farming and the growth of tourism, including the growth of second home ownership.
The decline in farming and the growth of tourism has created a range of problems including rural depopulation.
Management schemes exist in order to help upland glaciated areas adapt to recent changes.
