+System-wide Outcome for School- Based Professional Development
Prekindergarten-Grade 5 teams will review Common Core English Language Arts (Reading) or Mathematics Standards, through use of the HCPSS Transition to the Common Core Wiki, in order to prepare for the HCPSS Timeline of Implementation.
+The Common Core State Standards Bring Change…
In English Language Arts, these shifts will be characterized by an intense focus on complex, grade-appropriate non-fiction and fiction texts that require the application of academic vocabulary and other key college- and career-readiness skills.
In Mathematics, the Common Core State Standards demand that teachers focus their instruction on fewer, more central standards, thereby providing room to build core understandings and linkages between mathematical concepts and skills.
+Outcomes for School-Based Common Core Exploration:
All teachers will become familiar with the grade level Timeline of Implementation for the Elementary Common Core Standards in ELA and Mathematics. Prekindergarten teachers will explore the Common Core Mathematics for implementation in 2012 – 2013.
Kindergarten teachers will continue to explore HCPSS Common Core Mathematics Wiki with a focus on Quarter 4, including discussion of End of Year instructional levels.
Primary teachers (Grades 1-2) will explore the HCPSS Mathematics Wiki for implementation of the Common Core in 2012 – 2013.
Intermediate teachers (Grades 3-5) will explore the Common Core Reading Standards for implementation in 2012 – 2013.

Students currently in grades kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd will be the first classes to take the new Common Core assessments in 2014-2015.
+Staggered Implementation
As elementary teachers we are responsible for teaching all content. To ease the transition, we are adopting a staggered implementation plan. The next three slides outline this plan.
This plan allows grade bands to focus on implementing one content area while gaining an awareness of others.
