December Highlights

NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS: “A GREAT CURRENT RUNNING” In the summer of 1991, author and Kansas City Star columnist C.W. Gusewelle organized an expedition from the source to the mouth of the longest and most pristine of Siberia's great rivers, the Lena. Eight Americans and four Russians made the 2,700-mile journey to the Arctic Coast.

As they rode the great current north, they met and spoke with coal miners, reindeer herders and people living hard lives in villages huddled on the river's bank.

Don’t miss the chance to see this riveting documentary written and produced by C.W. Gusewelle, being shown at 7:00 on Monday, December 2, in the Westport Room.

INTRODUCTION TO POETRY ENRICHMENT

WITH POET & FORMER CHILDREN’S PERFORMER MARY LOU ANDERSON

Well-known actor and local children’s performer Mary Lou Anderson has always relied on her imagination to entertain herself and others — and retirement hasn’t slowed her down a bit. As a child of the Great Depression, Anderson recalls a lack of toys; children often made do with everyday objects and their imaginations. Anderson’s grandmother led the way: For fun and to promote healthy eating, she drew funny faces on vegetables and made up stories about them. “She was a great storyteller,” Anderson said. “That got me started.” Started in a career that began by playing “Gracie the Good Witch” at the U.S. Air Force Base’s TV station in Tripoli where her husband was stationed in 1955 and culminated in starring in her own local children’s TV shows. Anderson was “Mother Nature” — wearing a green toga and garland in her hair — on “41 Treehouse Lane” and then “The Mother Nature Show” on Kansas City’s KMBA from 1972 to 1984. She started out with her puppets (including Monica Mushroom, Anna Banana, Smarty Pants and Prudence Sprinkle Pot, to name a few), then decided to come out from behind the curtain once in a while as Mother Nature. Beyond the TV broadcasts, Anderson has giggled with and taught thousands of children in appearances at zoos, museums, libraries and schools. Today, after retiring from acting, moving into a condo and no longer driving, Anderson uses poetry as a creative outlet during this time of transition. She has shared her work and encouragement in the use of poetry to inspire others by leading workshops and discussion groups. Please join us for this opportunity to learn from this gifted poet and performer at 3:00 on Friday, December 6, in the Pub.

Get into the holiday spirit with Celtique as they perform a concert of traditional Christmas songs with an authentic Irish flair! Celtique is a three-member, local Irish band featuring Cathy and John Overton and Rhonda Abrams. The group focuses on traditional Irish music and instruments, including guitar, keyboard, tenor banjo and Bodhran (Irish drum).

You won’t want to miss this spirited concert at 3:00 on Wednesday, December 18, in the Madison Living Room.

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace, good will toward all people.” Luke 2:14

This was the hope of the angels as they proclaimed the birth of Jesus to the shepherds. We who believe in the glory of God and God’s son, Jesus, have not done a very good job of glorifying God by bringing peace to the earth and good will among people.

For most of us, world peace seems a bit beyond our grasp, as does the notion of everyone being understanding of one another. But giving up on the idea of fellowship is not the solution. Ignoring the world situation doesn’t help either. So, what are we to do?

At this time of year, when kindness seems more prevalent than usual, perhaps we can spend a bit of time considering how we can promote peace among God’s people right where we are. First, what gifts do we have to give? Time? Energy? Money? An encouraging spirit? A peaceful heart? Maybe we have the gift of gardening, teaching, cooking. Whatever gifts we possess, we can turn them into ways to increase peace and good will in our little section of the world.

Places to share our gifts abound. From helping with a community garden to volunteering for hospice to providing funds for the Salvation Army, all we need to do is match our gifts with the needs of the community. If we would like to help an adult learn to read, we can contact Literacy Kansas City. If we would like to share cheer with shut-ins, we might check with our church for someone we can call daily —or pray the weekly prayer list daily. If we would like to comfort those who are ill, we can call Saint Luke’s or other hospitals for opportunities there.

The point is, we cannot all be part of a peace committee reporting to the United Nations. But we can all do something to respond to the angels’ proclamation that long-ago night.

“Even the smallest act of caring for another person is like a drop of water — it will make ripples throughout the entire pond...” ― Jessy and Bryan Matteo

ADVENT LESSONS & CAROLS TO BE SUNG BY SAINT ANDREW’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH

CHANCEL CHOIR, DIRECTED BY ORGANST DINA EVENS

There is more to the Book of Daniel than lions! Come and help uncover the visions of Daniel in the winter Bible study, beginning Fridays in January in the Westport Room.

On December 24, 1918, those who attended the Christmas Eve service in the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, England, received an unexpected Christmas surprise. They found themselves participating in something called the Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols, a series of scriptural readings interspersed with carols, which was introduced that evening to bring a more imaginative approach to worship. That innovation has since become a beloved tradition, one that is observed in the King’s College Chapel and in many other places around the world. Including The Chapel of the Epiphany here at Bishop Spencer Place, at 3:00 on Sunday, December 15. Directed by organist Dina Evans, the Saint Andrew’s Episcopal

Church Chancel Choir will lead us in Lessons & Carols. Organ, choir and scripture — the word of God — help us to prepare for the birth of Jesus — the Word made flesh. Please join us!

AARON THORNBURG TO PERFORM PIANO RECITAL

Local standout Aaron Thornburg is returning to BSP to perform a piano recital for us while on holiday break from the University of Tulsa. Thornburg last performed for us in July 2011, as a recent graduate of Shawnee Mission Northwest High School where he was a star scholar and athlete, covered by the Kansas City Star as 2011 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Beyond scholarly and athletic pursuits, he is a talented pianist and we are fortunate he will be bringing those talents back to BSP! Join us for this special recital at 2:00 on Monday, December 23, in the Madison Living Room.

GARDEN TIME Missing something? The winds of November 16th not only blew leaves all over the place —especially into the Memorial Garden — but also knocked out of the ground the big blue spruce at the entrance to the Madison building. About the time you get this issue, the tulips for the spring flowers will be planted in the main beds of the Jefferson Circle and the Bishop’s Garden, as well as in the smaller beds at entrances and parking lots. Depending on how many are planted, the bright yellow pansies will disappear.

HARVESTERS HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE Help BSP help Harvesters this holiday season by donating to our annual food drive! Several collection barrels will be placed throughout the community, waiting to be filled with our contributions. Non-perishable items such as canned fruits, canned vegetables, hot and cold cereal, peanut butter & jelly and canned meats (soups, stews, tuna, etc.) are always in high demand and short supply. Your donations are greatly appreciated!

The annual BSP Employee Holiday Fund continues through December 12. The money will be given to the staff at the holiday party held on December 13. Thank you for your support!
