Fellow Members, Thanks to those Germania Members who gave up their personal time to plan and volunteer for Oktoberfest 2018. We should all be very proud of how we pitched in together as one team to make our major fundraising event wonderfully successful yet again! Our purpose at Germania has always been to further the understanding of German and German American History and Culture. We represented our mission well, along with

presenting a very positive image of our club to the community. Thank you for a job well done! Let’s keep our momentum going by continuing to volunteer as fully active Members. We are all in this together, so we must participate equally going forward. Please help each other by joining any one of our Committees, Volunteering to lead or help with a Dinner, Biergarten, or any other event. By working together, we can ensure our club retains a strong financial posture while having lots of fun! Contact Sylvia Reuter or Karen Rose today for information on how you can help. Thanks to you, our Festivals have grown to record numbers over the past two years, and we are looking for ways to continually improve. Please email me: [email protected] anytime with suggestions. Your input is very valuable. I will also be hosting Club Open Hours, 7pm, First Tuesday of every month, beginning October 2nd. Come out to discuss any subject, for as long as it takes…..and don’t forget the Bar will be open. Thank you and congratulations once again on our continued success. It is truly a blessing to be a part of our Germania family. The Festival Committee will have a full and complete Oktoberfest 2018 report available at our October 16th Membership Meeting. See you all there!

Sincerely, Bill Reuter

We are glad you joined! We are thrilled to have you on board and can't wait to get to know you. Reminder: Next Membership Meeting is on Tuesday, October 16th at 7:30pm

German-American Day is October 6th. There are "vibrant threads of German heritage woven into our national fabric." There is German influence in many fields of science and politics, business and industry, and art and culture. The stories of German immigrants, along with their hopes, dreams and accomplishments in society, are now a German-American story of friendship and mutual respect. The October 6th holiday commemorates the date in 1683 when 13 German families from Krefeld near the Rhine landed in Philadelphia and subsequently founded Germantown, Pennsylvania, the first German settlement in the original thirteen American colonies. Each year Presidents issue proclamations honoring the achievements and contributions of German-Americans to the history and development of our Nation and encouraging Americans to learn more about it.

If you would like to sponsor the 2019 festivals, please ask any Board member for a Sponsor Form. Sponsor donations range from $100 - $600.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS TO GERMANIA MEMBERS:

WISHING YOU A FUN AND SAFE HALLOWEEN! PUBLICATIONS AND BOOKS: We welcome our members to read the German newspaper whenever at the club, the New Yorker Staats-Zeitung & German Times. We subscribe to these publications. If it is a new issue, kindly leave it at the club for all to enjoy. If the issue is at least 3 months old then we invite you to take it home. Some members have dropped off German and Sports magazines, as well as German books. Due to the lack of space to store these items, please note that magazines and similar publications will be thrown away after about 4 weeks, and we will only keep certain books at the clubhouse. If you are interested in any of the books at the clubhouse before we remove them, or if know a particular book needs to be saved and marked with its significance to the club, please contact Karen Rose at 914-489-8344 or Sylvia Reuter at 914-882-0200. PLEASE REGISTER YOUR EMAIL! If you do not currently receive the Germania Newsletter via email, and wish to receive our news and event details first and in full color, please go to www.GermaniaPok.com, click the "news" link, and then scroll down to "subscribe for newsletter and more". Every member who receives the newsletter via email saves the club money by reducing our copy and mailing expenses. PAST DUE DUES. If you have not already done so, please renew your membership at Germania. Please mail in your check payable to Germania, or credit card information, for the 2018-2019 membership years and mail it to 37 Old DeGarmo Rd., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603; the due date was July 1st. There was no increase in dues this year: Single Membership $85, Couple Membership $160, Honorary Membership $65, Life Membership (suggested donation) $25. For information, please email Sylvia at [email protected]. MEMBERSHIP CARD POLICY. As a member, it is your responsibility to carry your current membership card in your wallet and be prepared to validate your membership upon entrance to the club either to the Door Attendant or the Bartender on duty— even if you may be a long time member. If we have a volunteer that does not personally know you, please be patient and respectful when you are asked to show your membership card. Our growing membership makes this practice necessary. These practices, along with signing-in of nonmembers, are requirements of the NYS Liquor Authority. If you lost or misplaced your card, please contact the membership chairperson for a replacement card. Please remember to ask your guests to sign our guest book. Thank you. RENTALS. Please defer ALL rental inquiries to the club's rental agent Dori Licis at 845-255-7616 or email to [email protected]. Only our rental agent quotes fees, policies and available dates. No member should promise date availability based on the bartender calendar... only the rental agent can confirm availability of the hall or pavilion because we have many inquiries and recent bookings may not yet be written in the bar calendar. Any changes to the Germania event calendar should not be made until after confirming availability with our rental agent. Reminder: One-year + Members receive discounted rates.

Any time you are at Germania Hall or the Pavilion for a meeting, practice, rehearsal, gathering, or event, PLEASE clean up afterward. Tables, chairs and bar stools should be straightened out, floor swept, garbage thrown away, tables and/or bar wiped down, and dishes and/or glasses washed. We may have a rental or event following your use of the club or grounds, and it is not fair to the next group. Also, please use one of our ladders if you are decorating for an event and do NOT stand on the chairs; we are finding foot prints on the chairs and ladies heels can puncture the seat. Thank you.

GARDENING: Please help keep our seasonal planters looking great by watering them when you are at the club. If you notice wilting or dry dirt, there is a watering can to the right of the entrance and a water faucet at the corner. We have a handful of dedicated members who look after our plants, but they cannot be there as often as is truly needed. Throughout the spring and summer, please also feel free to pluck a weed or two if you see them on your way in or out of the clubhouse. Vielen dank!

LOST AND FOUND: 3XL grey Champion hoodie, a child's Oshkosh coat, a First Niagara Empire State Games windbreaker jacket, and a black ladies long-sleeve cotton shrug / sweater. These items were found at the Germania Pavilion and after approximately 6 weeks hanging in our club house coat closet we generally donate unclaimed items to Goodwill. Please stop by the club if you think one of these items is yours.

PLEASE SEND US YOUR NEWS, ARTICLES, CLUB EVENT FLYERS AND PICTURES: newsletter submission dates are before Jan 15 (Feb issue), Mar 15 (April issue), May 15 (June issue), July 15 (August issue), Sept 15 (October issue), Nov 15 (December issue). Please also send me "old" and "historic" pictures for Days of Yore news section. [email protected]

You are traveling alone. During your journey how do you picture your successful life in America? What steps would you like to take to ensure your success?" Our condolences to Heather Blatz and her family on the loss of her father, GERALD M. RASSMAN, who went to

His light shine on others. He lived a life of integrity and honored God, family, and country. He will be forever cherished by everyone whose life was touched by him. His family wishes to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and staff at The Heart Center and Vassar Brothers Medical Center for their attentive, compassionate care.

Volksmarsch Club "Alle Diese Wandern Sind Nicht Verirrten." - J. R. R. Tolkien (All That Wander Are Not Lost.)

If you have not already had the chance, check out our club's adopted 1.5 miles on the Dutchess Rail Trail starting at Love Road (behind Stop N Shop) heading toward LaGrange! Please take pride in the trail and help keep our 1.5 mile section clean, not only on scheduled quarterly clean up dates to be announced, but throughout the year. And, we encourage all Germania members that walk or bike the DRT to please pitch in if they see litter. We also invite our members to send pictures of themselves and their walking/biking group on the trail to the Germania Newsletter Editor and to Germania's Webmaster. Pictured left: Sylvia and her dog Sandy.

On August 1st, between thunderstorms, Sue Plog spent time alone on behalf of the Volksmarsch Club of Germania of Poughkeepsie and completed our quarterly cleanup of adopted trail. She collected approximately three bags of trash, most of which was empty drink containers carelessly tossed alongside the trail. She also communicated her efforts and findings/concerns to an authority at Dutchess County. Watch the website and your email for another clean up date to be scheduled this fall, hopefully in October. SPECIAL THANKS TO SUE FOR HER VOLUNTEER HOURS AND DEDICATION TO THIS ENDEAVOR!

Check out the Volksmarsch page on the Germania website (under "Aktivities") which includes information about upcoming hikes, a blog, and a picture gallery. Anyone can join our walks anytime at trailheads or Contact Susan Plog at 631-514-1716 or [email protected]

Jägerschnitzel Dinner at Germania --- SOLD OUT! and Kudos to Strudel baking team A delicious Jägerschnitzel dinner was served to about 70 members and their guests at the Friday Night Dinner on July 27th. Served with mashed potatoes and red cabbage, the dinner was a hit! The dessert was a generous piece of Germania's own apple strudel sprinkled with some powdered sugar. KUDOS to the hardworking team of volunteers: Kitchen: Gary & Joyce Schonmann, Dori & Peter Licis, and Chris Blatz; Servers: Susan Plog and Helga Nowak-Razey; Cashier: Ginni Wagner; Bartenders: Edgar Licis and Jim Gordon. Barb Troan heads the team that makes the Apfelstrudel for Germania throughout the year. George Calabrese, Carol Meyer, Liz Calabrese, Linda Ciferri, Lauren Ludwig, Nancy Compton, Rosemary Compton, and Joanne Wiedemann are among the handful of volunteers that have worked with Barb to bake apple strudel for all Germania events. Gene Schlag is always willing to help wash all the trays and utensils after a strudel bake. You are all amazing volunteers and we thank you for donating your expertise, time and energy to the club. Food shopping, food prep, cooking, baking, dishwashing, clean up, setup, and serving, are among the many things that our volunteers do to support the club. We hope that many of our members will see the work that these volunteers do and be inspired to do the same. We are also grateful for the support of our members who are loyal patrons of the Friday night dinners, Biergartens, Wednesday lunches, and special events, oftentimes bringing along their families and friends. Join us at one of our upcoming events! Check our website www.germaniapok.com or pick up the latest events calendar from the clubhouse.

WISH LIST While many of our members generously make monetary donations to the club, some members want to donate items to the club. Unfortunately sometimes we do not have a use or storage space for those donated items, or members are not aware of what we may need at Germania. So, here is an "office" wish list that would reduce our supplies expenses:

Building and Grounds News * Property Committee - By Karen Rose (so apologies if anyone or any details have been overlooked) On August 3, 2018 a severe storm downed wires and trees in the area including on Old DeGarmo Road; the festival grounds and soccer field were a mess and power outages threatened rentals scheduled for the weekend. Special thanks to all who helped, especially Chris Blatz, Jim Ricker, Charlie Braun and Kevin Kieran with the cleanup, alarm issues, and interfacing. Kevin also took the time to pick up about 50 beer cans, bottles, and garbage from the blue cans that were blown across the soccer field and property, along with branches and debris. Bill Reuter (with Dori's help while vacationing) made sure the facility renters were alerted and okay, and Bill checked on our food inventory (our only loss was chicken). Great team work everyone!

And it was not by all means our only storm to contend with! One of the pictures here is clean up efforts after the July 20th storm that left the clubhouse and community without power and with yard debris from heavy winds. Thank you to all who pitched in to help. In fact, much has been done at the grounds since that July storm such as trimming trees and brush, fixing railings, plumbing repairs, more cleaning, and digging a drainage ditch, and some members have donated materials or made connections for us at minimal cost to Germania. Saturday August 18, 2018 another great group of volunteers turned out for

grounds clean up day to prepare for Oktoberfest. The guys from the soccer club that helped with field and fence work were Mark Fumasoli, Rob Wheeler, Jeff Contelmo, Bill Gorton, Rob Esposito, Matt Viggiano Chuck Omphalius, Scott Grimes, and Richard Kpobi. The festival grounds crew was Kevin Kieran and his brother Peter, Gary Schonmann, Bill & Sylvia Reuter, Susan Koppenhaver, Chris Blatz, Charlie Braun, Stan Elmendorf, Loreto Angelino, Carl Siebert, and John Russell. In addition to various landscaping tasks such as trimming trees, raking and weed whacking, a delivery of stone was spread (very laborious work), and toilets were replaced. Special thanks to all that helped out! On August 28th, in the 95 degrees heat, Bill Reuter delivered hay to Germania as part of festival preparations in anticipation of any rain that might come our way. This was just one of an endless amount of grounds tasks tended to by Bill, and other members of the Festival Committee. Special thanks also to the members who took many personal hours to participate in the Friday morning pavilion clean up day on August 31st to clean and prep for Oktoberfest: tasks included cutting and clearing still more branches; moving picnic tables; Power washing all pavilion areas including tables/garbage cans; cleaning all appliances: freezer, refrigerators, oven and stove; Repair and put up banners; testing equipment/exit lights/outlets; raking the playground; pounding fencing stakes...etc, AND etc. To: Chris Blatz, Gary Schonmann, Jim Gallagher, Charlie Braun, Darryl Bielski, Tom Schroeder, John Russell, Carl Siebert, Stan Elmendorf, Sylvia Reuter, Bill Reuter... Job well done... Thank you! And thanks also to Bill who begged and pleaded with the service man to come out on Labor Day and repair the Bar Cooler Compressor that stopped working... just in the nick of time because we utilize that space to store items for the festival. Now we turn our attention to fall clean up and winterizing tasks, and any clubhouse projects that need to be either finished or started. If you would like to join the committee, or lend a hand on a particular project, please contact Chairperson Kevin Kieran at 646-523-2828 or [email protected].

Join us at our annual Christkindlmarkt to be held on Friday evening, November 16th (4pm - 8pm) and Saturday, November 17th (10am - 4pm). While enjoying a German Christmas Market on a cold day, a popular tradition is to drink a cup of Glühwein to ignite your holiday glow. Glühwein is a hot, spiced red wine also known as mulled wine, and will be available at our Christkindlmarkt. As always, there will also be lots of delicious baked goods for sale (strudel, stolen, cookies and more) baked right here in our own kitchen by our own members. Pre-order sheets will be available at the clubhouse. Enjoy our festively decorated clubhouse and holiday music while you start your Christmas shopping with our artisan and gift vendors. Stay for a bite to eat because the kitchen will be open and we will have a heated tent accessible from the bar. Please invite your family and friends to enjoy the pre-holiday season together at Germania Hall.

Vendors should contact Joyce Schonmann at (845) 489-4758 – [email protected] Members who can help out should stop by Germania and take a look at the sign-up sheet in the Volunteer Book. We need help setting up, serving food, selling baked goods, cooking & plating, dishwashing, and with clean up. Volunteers can call Bobbie at 845-797-8102 or [email protected].

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Germany’s Thanksgiving is called Erntedankfest and is celebrated in early October. The date varies depending on region, and is primarily a rural and a religious celebration. Erntedankfest traditions in Germany revolve around harvest and grain and vary depending on where you live. Families attend a church service; and huge straw baskets filled with grain, fruit, potatoes, etc., are carried to the church where they are blessed. In rural areas, Erntekränze, big wreaths made from grain, are hung on doors or, Erntekronen, huge crowns, skillfully woven from grain and decorated with ribbons, are erected in the marketplace of smaller towns and villages. Smaller crowns are also often put on the roofs of farm buildings and barns. The crowns are carried in Umzügen (parades) at the end of a church service. In the USA, Thanksgiving tradition is traced to when our forefathers, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time to give reverent thanks for their safety, the health of their children, the fertility of their fields, the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God. The traditional holiday feast dates back to November 1621, when the newly arrived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered at Plymouth for an autumn harvest celebration. In modern day America we commonly associate Thanksgiving Day with parades, football and special dinners. But what do we celebrate or commemorate on Thanksgiving? Some gather to give thanks for the blessing of the harvest; families give thanks for the meal they are about to share. We reflect on our past and our present circumstances, and give thanks for our blessings. We are reminded of the bounty of treasures that is a part of our lives. We spend a few moments before the Thanksgiving dinner to give thanks for the richness of our lives and for our wonderful family and friends.

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday, Germania's Board of Directors would like to give thanks for the following blessings: our home Germania Hall, this year's successful celebrations of our German heritage and our ability to share German culture and traditions with the community, the lifelong friendships we have fostered within the club, and for our members who dedicate their time and efforts into making our club strong and successful. We wish health to all our members, friends and family.

Happy Thanksgiving!
