Giving back to your parents with a Charitable Gift Annuity Are you looking for the perfect gift for your aging parents that would guarantee income for life? Consider opening up a charita-ble gift annuity with the Archdiocese of Newark. A charitable gift annuity can provide payments with direct deposit to your aging parents now and a gift to their parish later, all while providing you with both piece of mind and an income tax de-duction. If you would like information on this unique gift, please contact Theresa Lynch, Planned Giving Manager, Arch-diocese of Newark (973) 497-4042 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Wisdom of the Saints We are told by all spiritual writers that one important point to bear in mind, as we seek to attain humility, is not to be surprised by our own faults and failures.

—François Fénelon, archbishop of Cambrai Look at me. God’s mercy has preserved me to this day in bodily virginity, but I confess that I have not escaped from the imper-fection of being more excited by the conversation of young women than by being talked at by an old woman.

—St. Dominic God is like a mother who carries her child in her arms by the edge of a precipice. While she is seeking all the time to keep him from danger, he is doing his best to get into it.

Sanctity of Life

“We need to acknowledge the great variety of family situa-tions that can offer a certain stability, but de facto or same-sex unions, for example, may not simply be equated with marriage. No union that is temporary or closed to the transmission of life can ensure the future of society. "There are absolutely no grounds for considering homo-sexual unions to be in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family.” “It is unacceptable ‘that local Churches should be subject-ed to pressure in this matter and that international bodies should make financial aid to poor countries dependent on the introduction of laws to establish ‘marriage’ between persons of the same sex’.” (Amoris Laetitia by Pope Francis ¶52, 251)

Do not withhold discipline from a child (Proverbs 23:13) You’re probably aware of the phrase “spare the rod, spoil the child”. It means if a parent refuses to discipline an unruly child, that child will grow up being used to getting his own way. In other words he’ll become a spoiled brat. The saying comes from Proverbs 13:24, “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.” The Lord uses dis-cipline to reveal to us our sins. This is also how parents reveal the truth of our need for a Savior to their children. When a child does not feel the consequences of his sins, he will not under-stand that sins demand punishment. The Lord provides a way to salvation and forgiveness through Jesus, but that means little if we do not see our sins. Discipline or correction shows us that we’re not above blame and that we are accountable for our actions. Our natural pride blinds us to our need for our Savior Jesus Christ, but discipline reveals the truth of our misery (Revelation 3:17). Since salvation is the most important choice our children will ever make, it is imperative that we lead them to Christ, and discipline is critical to this process. Proverbs (23:13) says, “Do not withhold disci-pline from a child; if you punish him with the rod, he will not die,” i.e. experience spiritual death, in fact he will live. Children who respect authority and feel sorrow for their sins or misdeeds are much more likely to ask Jesus for for-giveness and be saved. We are all born sinners (Romans 5:12–19). We call this original sin and we are inclined to sin personally (concupiscence). That doesn’t mean we aren’t valuable and worthy of love. So all children need dis-cipline. Discipline is critical for Christian discipleship and a child who obeys his parents will likewise obey God. As an aside: some people believe in discipline, but not in phys-ical discipline such as spanking. Physical discipline may have its place; a small amount of physical pain with no lasting physical injury may have its positive effects. A child should never ever be bruised or injured; that is abusive. The Bible warns that par-ents should never abuse the power and authority they have over their children while they are young because it provokes the chil-dren to righteous anger (Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21). Physi-cal discipline must always be done in love, never anger or frus-tration. It is also just one small part of discipline and its use should be limited and never imposed in the heat of the moment. God instructs parents to parent their children the way He par-ents His children. Hebrews 12:5–11 tells us that God disciplines those whom He loves to perfect their righteousness. God only disciplines His own, which proves that Christians are His be-loved children. Notice David said that the Lord’s rod comforts him in his time of trouble (Psalm 23:4). Finally, we know that no discipline feels good while it is hap-pening, but afterwards the rewards are rich (Hebrews 12:11). Good character and fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, forbear-ance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) are rewards of God’s discipline. Children who have learned how to take responsibility for their actions are much happier people (Proverbs 3:11–18). The importance of discipline is that it steers the heart of a child toward Jesus and the for-giveness of sin He offers. When parents trust God’s methods over their own, they will see the blessings for their children and themselves.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

The punishment of the wise who refuse to take part in government is to live under the rule of the foolish.

—Plato

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent decades, attention has shifted away from headgear as a symbol of a bishop’s authority to a more substantial symbol: the chair, called the cathedra. The word comes from the Latin word for a chair with armrests. It is exactly the reason why dining room sets were market-ed in this country a few years ago with only one chair with armrests, the captain’s chair. In many rectories of a certain vintage, you will see only one chair with arms at the din-ing table, a sign to the assisting priests of their proper place in the constellation. The cathedra is a sign of the teaching authority of the bishop. We inherited the symbol-ism of the chair from Roman civil life in the fourth centu-ry. A church that houses a cathedra is called a cathedral, and the chair may be used only by the bishop of that dio-cese. Priests who preside at liturgy there must use a differ-ent presidential chair.

OFFERING MASSES FOR THE REPOSE OF SOULS It is customary not only to visit the graves of our dearly departed, but also to have Masses offered for the eternal repose of their souls. Hav-ing a Mass offered for the repose of a soul, and offering our own prayers, is more beneficial and comforting than a card or bouquet of flow-ers. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC): “From the beginning the church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eu-charistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the bea-tific vision of God” (CCC #1032). Contact or visit the Rectory Office at 201-343-5170 to have a Mass offered for a soul who may need your prayers to be freed from Purgatory and enter Paradise! There are many Mass-es available for this year.

Dear bothers and sisters, I am Olivia Duncan and I want to share my experi-ence with all of you. This summer I went on a pil-grimage to see the Holy Father in Poland. I am aware that many of the parishioners contributed to our trip and I am extreme-

ly thankful for that, which is why I decided to share my experi-ence. I honestly enjoyed my time in Poland greatly because I got to know people in a better way. Father Jose would always tell us talk to different people and to get out of our group of friends in the youth group and get to know the others more deeply. I would always say that I knew everyone just because I knew their names. In reality I didn't know everyone and I didn't get to know them until our journey to Europe. Something about waking up everyday to see the same people really makes me feel more con-nected. We were split up into different groups and I honestly can tell you I wasn't very excited about it. There were some people that I judged and didn't think I would get along with. But then I realized that I was completely wrong about them and should never judge anyone until I get to know him or her. Being that I spent all my time with these people, I got to know them on a personal level which changed the way I looked at them. I feel we were becoming closer and becoming a family especially due to the fact we were only familiar with each other. We were all far away from our families so we were the closest thing to one an-other. We did not just become a family, we became one as God is one with the Son and the Holy Spirit . We did everything as a group: we ate breakfast lunch and dinner together and witnessed so many beautiful things as one. We even saw Pope Francis in person as one. Seeing the Pope is one of the best things that has ever happened to me and to be able to share that with the people that I am closest to is a blessing. Thank you for all of your sup-port. God bless you.
