Cells Don’t Last Forever. Cell are the basic unit of structure and function

for life. Once life is established, its existence is on a

clock, winding down. Eventually, all cells meet their demise. There has to be a mechanism to keep

cells persisting in nature however. Reproduction is one mechanism. Cell division is the most basic form. This is what your next unit is about.

A Cell Divided You will learn that a cell does a lot throughout its

life. Makes proteins, duplicates its DNA, lives.

You will also learn that a cell goes through division for three main reasons:› To replace old or…› To repair damaged tissue or…› To allow an organism to grow.

This process of cell division doesn’t happen randomly as you can expect.

It is highly regulated, cyclical, and has distinct features.

As such, there are five main stages of the cell cycle during a cell’s life that you must know, during each of which specific things happen.

The Cell Cycle

These stages of a cell’s life make up what is called the cell cycle.

The cell cycle is a repeating sequence of cellular growth and division during the life of a cell.

Your job today is to discover what these five stages are and identify the main process that happens during each of these stages.

Work in pairs. 1 book per pair. Work with books in partners.
