Before World War II, Kadena was a part of Chatan Town, and because of its location in the middle part of Okinawa, it was an important place. Today, 83% of the town’s land mass is still occupied by the U.S. leaving only 17% of the town area to local people to live. Still, Kadena Town doesn't want to present Kadena as only a base town, and keeps developing the area with support from the central government budget. Mizugama seawall offers a breathtaking view of sunsets over the ocean. Visitors can swim at Kadena Marina, then go shopping next door to Navel Kadena where there is the Ryukyu Dragon Pro-wrestling ring offering regular pro-wrestling shows for the entire family to enjoy almost every weekend. The Kadena Road Station is very famous among tourists, and every day many people visit there. The Kadena Culture Center is also available as a con- cert stage or to play drama recitals. Now, it’s the time to hold the Noguni Soukan Festival, the biggest festival in Kadena taking place this weekend at Kaneku Seaside Park. Noguni Soukan was from Kadena Town, and a person credited for bringing the sweet potato cultivation from China to Okinawa in 1605. That saved Okinawa from hunger during the peak of the Ryukyu Kingdom era and eventually the sweet potato spread to main- land Japan for the benefit of people there. Although no one knows his name, as "Noguni" refers to the village where he was from and Soukan was his title.Noguni "Soukan" of Kadena is the most famous Kadena native today. The Noguni Soukan Festival will be held this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. 12-year-old Rai Matsushima is waiting for a heart transplant. Noguni Soukan, a Kadena-born civil servant of the Ryukyu Kingdom who introduced sweet potato from China to Okinawa, and Hija River flowing through the town, are both enduring symbols of Kadena Town.

To many, Kadena Town is synony-mous with hosting the largest U.S.military base in the Pacific, but thetown is eager to turn peoples’ eyes

beyond that to discover its economicimpact on Okinawa.

Kadena Town area is officially 15.04square kilometers, and it’s located in themiddle of Okinawa south of Yomitan, north of Chatan and east of Okinawa City.In reality, though, 83% of Kadena Townland is not really the town’s, as it makes upKadena Air Base.

Buffet doesn’t get any better than Shinka Lunch at Hilton

By David Higgins

The view of the HiltonHotel is a magnificentsight if you are on theharbor part of the seawall.

Standing inside the hotel certainlyhas the same effect. At first Iwondered whether I was up to theHilton Hotel standards as I wasdecidedly underdressed, and

wearing flip-flops. However, myfears were allayed as the staffwere very welcoming and warmthe minute I stepped through thedoor; from the front door staff allthe way through to the servers atthe buffet.

The lunch buffet is on thefirst floor, just to the left of theentrance. The hours of the lunchbuffet are daily 11:30-3:00 pm.

We were seated right in front ofthe window, which provides aview of the Chatan harbor and isquite stunning. The buffet itselfis so big that the distance to theend from your table is quite con-siderable; it almost feels like youshouldn’t feel any guilt becauseyou are burning calories walkingback and forth. The restaurant isspotless and so clean. Everythinglooks perfectly organized andwell designed.

I thought the food wasincredible. The buffet starts withsushi with a sushi chef cuttingand slicing fish in front of you.We then move on to the salad sec-tion. After salad we hit the meatsection and then the vegetablesection. Instead of being theusual assortment of plain steamedvegetables, all the vegetableswere prepared with exotic sauces.

It was remarkable how uniqueall the dishes were. Moving onfrom the vegetables you comeacross Indian curries with lamband traditional Okinawan disheslike goya champuru.

Now, for the part that every-one usually tries to save room for– the desserts. The desserts at theHilton did not disappoint. Therewere an assortment of pies, exoticpuddings and mousses. As abonus there was even a yogurtchef who would mix any type offrozen yogurt and fruit for you byhand. The biceps on this yogurtchef were huge from smashing allthat frozen yogurt together. I amnot a big fan of chocolate water-falls, but as far as aesthetics go

there was a pretty impressive-looking chocolate waterfall.

We started and ended thebuffet with coffees, and the coffeewas delicious. I felt that it was allsuch high quality food, and prob-ably some of the highest qualityfood on the island. Although theHilton Buffet is a bit more expen-sive than other places onOkinawa, it is well worth it. Thecost of the buffet is ¥2400 perperson. This would be perfect forany special occasion, a birthday,

or maybe just a celebration ofyour payday.

After you are finished eatinglunch you can take a tour aroundthe hotel. The front pool area isopen for use, and after we weredone eating lunch we didn't reallyfeel like swimming but we lodgedin the hammocks in the beautifulOkinawan sun and just relaxed. Igive it up to the Hilton for creat-ing a very high quality atmos-phere along with a spectacularbuffet.
