Pycrofts Road looks like anyother busy main road inChennai. As pedestrians andmotorists go past an incon-spicuous-looking building, quitea few of them instantly gaze upto watch the amazing scene ofhundreds of feathery littlegreen parrots perched on theterrace of the building and onwires adjacent to it, take flight.
In a time where bird sightingsin cities are in decline becauseof lack of natural habitats, thesheer number of parrots thatland up every single day on theterrace of this particular build-ing is astounding.
The man behind this greensanctuary amidst an almost-concrete jungle in the city is C.Sekar, who has been feedingthese parrots in the terrace ofhis house popularly called ‘TheCamera House’, for well over adecade. Sekar repairs camerasfor a living and has a collectionof more than 4000 vintagecameras.
Every day from 5.30 a.m to7.30 a.m, and from 4 p.m to 6p.m, Sekar goes about his rou-tine of placing rice grains onwooden slabs on his terrace.He has been requiring on anaverage of 20 kg of rice everyday to pursue what he starteda decade ago, feeding parrots.
He has not left his place fora day since he has started thisnoble deed. He says he doesn‘twant to break the routine andkeep them hungry for even a

day.Sekar initially started out
placing rice along theperimieter of his terrace andas the numbers grew gradu-ally he had to start keeping upwith the demand. He nowplaces 10-15 wooden slabsacross the terrace with freshlyprepared rice grains equallyplaced on them. Once the birdsare done eating he comes backto clean up the place, clear thewooden slabs and pick up thewasted rice until evening whenhe goes about the whole pro-cess again.
He says it all started withtwo parrots and their num-bers kept increasing and nowthere are close to a thousand ofthem. He is very particularnot to disturb them when theyeat and does not let anybodyup his house as he fears itmight scare them and they
might not come back. He af-fectionately calls them ‘avange’and says ‘avangebayanduduvange’. He is just acontent silent observer for thenext couple of hours as the
parrots merrily peck on thegrains. At the end of the day heis just a humble man who goesabout his everyday routinewith extraordinary commit-ment.

Sincethe last couple of years, the roadmargins have been convertedinto parking spaces, especiallyfor 4-wheelers. It reduces theroad width thereby inhibiting freemovement of vehicles. Sir, Most of the ordinary white board MTC buses on 11G and 12G routes have been convertedto express service at higher fares. However these express service buses ply like white boardbuses with the same stoppage pattern. Hence it appears that MTC’s motive is to earn morerevenue and not to offer value for extra money spent by the commuters for these express servicebuses. Already the other routes via West Mambalam namely 11H and 49A only have expressand deluxe services. Oil companies indirectly forcing consumers to give-up subsidySir, Oil companies have been soliciting its LPG consumers through SMS to join its campaign
of ‘Nation building’ by giving up LPG subsidy. Now the option to give up subsidy has beenintroduced in the interactive voice response (IVRS) refill booking system over phone. It is quitedangerous for someone not willing to give up subsidy. Earlier in the IVRS system, one did nothave any problem in ordering refills as there were only options like [1] refill booking, [2]complaint and [3] enquiry. But now, aside from the above three options, a new one [0] has beenadded. If one unknowingly or accidentally presses the [0] option, it would end up in the consumergiving up the subsidy. The addition of ‘0’ is a well laid out trap and there are many consumerswho have unwantedly fallen bait to it. Consumers must be persuaded to give up subsidy on theirown volition and not through such methods of coercion. The additional option [0] must beimmediately removed from the IVRS refill booking system to safeguard the interest of theconsumer. Smart ration card system yet to be implementedSir, Though the validity of ration cards had expired more than three years ago, it is being
extended year after year by way of attaching additional sheets. We have been hearing for a longtime that smart cards will replace the existing ration cards. But in reality, it does not seem tobe so. In the absence of any clear picture as to when the smart cards will be issued, thecardholders have no other option but to go through yet again the rigmarole of attachingadditional sheets to the already burdened ration card with such ‘validity’’ sheets for the year2016.
