Preparing for this event has been an extremely gratifying experience as we have been overjoyed by the support of our friends who really are our family in our adopted home:

Hong Kong. For that, we thank you both for your support and for your generosity.

Despite our grim reality in the Middle East, we always retain hope for a better future. It is through education that we can empower future generations with the ability to look beyond the present and see the possibilities of peace through equality, tolerance and coexistence.

These are values that we share with Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish and this is why we have invited him to Hong Kong to talk about his foundation.

The Daughters For Life Foundation, based in Canada, is creating pathways for girls and women from all over the Middle East to follow their professional dreams and to get the education and support they deserve.

With your help, our aim tonight is to give the foundation the ammunition needed to expand its mission.

With gratitude and appreciation,

Suhair Taha BrownEvent Co-Chair

Join us in our quest to help as many scholars as we can this evening.

We are delighted to present our first Middle Eastern fundraiser in Hong Kong, in support of women’s higher education — a cause that can influence most directly

a young person’s perspective, their family’s way of life, a community’s bid for true development, and the long-term chances for peace among people.

We welcome with pleasure the author and Nobel Prize nominee Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, who came especially for this event from Toronto. He started the Daughters for Life Foundation and has already made a difference in the lives of nearly 80 young women.

He will surely discover that even this far to the East, many here believe just as he does: that a lasting peace in the Middle East is a global priority. The most assured strategy for reaching that goal is to educate the next generation well, strengthen their knowledge and understanding, and widen their perspective on the world.

Please join us in our quest to help as many scholars as we can this evening.

Thank you for your generous support.

DR. ABUELAISH BELIEVES THAT DOCTORS CAN ACT AS MESSENGERS OF PEACE, AND

WORK TOWARD BRIDGING THE DIVIDE BETWEEN PEOPLE IN CONFLICT ZONES EVERYWHERE. HE BELIEVES THAT THE

REAL ENEMY—NOT ONLY BETWEEN PALESTINIAN AND ISRAELI, BUT IN

ALL CONFLICTS— IS IGNORANCE, THE DEHUMANIZATION OF OTHERS AND AN INABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND

COMMUNICATE WITH OTHERS. HE BELIEVES THE FUTURE MUST BE

ABOUT TOLERANCE, DIGNITY, RESPECT AND EMBRACING OUR UNIVERSAL

HUMANITY AND INTERCONNECTEDNESS.

FROM THE FOUNDER

On behalf of The Daughters for Life Foundation, I am delighted to be present at the first fundraiser for our charity here in Hong Kong. It is a long way from Toronto, yet it is wonderful

to feel among friends tonight and I am grateful for your presence tonight. Your support is the backbone of our work to advance the education and wellbeing of girls and young women in the Middle East.

The Daughters for Life Foundation is built on the belief that empowering young women through education is essential to building lasting peace in the Middle East.

The Foundation provides aspiring girls and young women with awards and scholarships to help them advance their education to its full potential. This helps these young women to develop strong voices for improving life in conflict-riddled areas.

In 2011, we presented the first DFL Scholarship Awards to young women to study Medicine, Law, Business Administration and Journalism in Canada and the Middle East. Our 78 scholars (and counting) are doing us proud with their commitment to their studies, and their enthusiasm to broaden their horizons.

In the next five years we will be actively developing our programmes, forming strong new collaborations with leading academic institutions worldwide. New scholarship initiatives that we have recently negotiated with universities in the US, the UK and the United Arab Emirates will provide opportunities to truly deserving young women to overcome severe financial barriers and to reach their education goals.

With your continued support, I am confident we will achieve our goal of investing in the leadership potential of young women in the Middle East through the power of education.

On behalf of our aspiring scholars, I thank you for being here tonight.

MISSION

TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION AND HEALTH OF GIRLS AND WOMEN IN THE MIDDLE EAST.

VISION

TO CREATE A PEACEFUL WORLD THROUGH THE POWER OF EDUCATION.

WE BELIEVE

THAT LASTING PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST DEPENDS ON EMPOWERING GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN THROUGH EDUCATION AND HEALTH IMPROVEMENTS,

TO DEVELOP STRONG VOICES FOR THE BETTERMENT OF LIFE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST.

THE DAUGHTERS FOR LIFE FOUNDATION

The Daughters For Life Foundation, founded in 2010, is a registered Canadian charity established to provide girls and young women in the Middle East the opportunity to play an influential role in improving their community’s quality of life through their own education.

The foundation provides scholarship awards to talented and aspiring young women to pursue studies otherwise inaccessible to them.

We offer scholarships, awards and fellowships to a broad range of aspiring young women. Our scholars may be from any middle eastern nationality or background, whether Arab or Israeli, and regardless of religious affiliation, whether Muslim, Jewish, or Christian.

Our recipients are chosen not only for their academic achievements, often in the face of socio-economic adversity, but also for their commitment to improving the lives of others in their communities in the middle east. Our goal is to invest in their education and potential for leadership in whatever domains their careers may lead.

The Daughters For Life programmes are available at the graduate and undergraduate level at schools and universities in Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, as well as in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.

I.THE DAUGHTERS FOR LIFESCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

Offers young women in the Middle East scholarships in Canada and the United Kingdom to pursue English-language study programs as well as post-secondary studies at the undergraduate and graduate level.

In the 2012-2013 academic year, we welcomed the first DFL scholars to Canada from the Middle East. Yosra Albakkar, Ayah Alsisi and Hadeel Baraka are taking part in our scholarship program in collaboration with Trent University and The Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.

The Scholarship Programme has also provided two half-scholarships to Nour Daoud and Marsil Hana, two young women from Syria who are enrolled in full-time studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology in the United States.

In the 2013-2014 academic year, we expect to welcome eight more students on scholarships to Trent University, The Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto, The International Language Academy of Canada and Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom.

II.THE DAUGHTERS FOR LIFEAWARDS PROGRAMME

Another way in which we are helping outstanding female students in the Middle East continue their education where there is a risk of dropping out due to financial difficulty.

One-time awards of US$1,000 assist dedicated students to complete their higher education at home. The Program recognizes female university students of accredited academic programs in the Middle East who have overcome hardship, demonstrated academic achievement and made an outstanding contribution to improving the lives of girls and young women in the Middle East.

In 2011, twenty-three awards were presented to students in the Middle East to assist in their enrollment in Al Azhar University, Gaza; The University of Haifa, Israel; The University of Jordan; Ben-Gurion University in the Negev, Israel; and The Islamic University, Gaza.

III.THE DAUGHTERS FOR LIFEFELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

Provides opportunities for exceptional female students from schools in the Middle East to undertake academic studies in collaboration with partner universities in Canada, the United States and Europe.

Fellowship opportunities do not have to be directly related to the student’s program of study. The objective is to broaden the students’ understanding of the host country, expand their disciplinary horizons and encourage them to make a lasting contribution in their own communities.

On February 19-25, 2013, four women delegates from Gaza participated in The Norris and Margery Bendetson EPIIC International Symposium on Global Health at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.

Hadeel Baraka hails from Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip. She has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the College of Administrative Sciences at Al-Aqsa University in Gaza. She plans to enroll in the Applied Modelling and Quantitative Methods Graduate Program at Trent University in 2013.

“I am a strong person and I believe that we should not give up. If one door closes, I work hard to open another. Coming to Canada to study is a dream come true. I want to go back after I am done with my studies so I can help women to develop their potential and improve their life conditions.”

Ayah Al-Sisi is from the Khan Younis refugee camp in Gaza. Ayah earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Al-Aqsa University in Gaza and is enrolled in the Journalism Program at The Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.

“I believe in girls and young women as agents of change. And I am determined to turn this opportunity

for a Canadian education into a positive path for my family, my people and myself. I want to go back with a degree in my hand and work hard to open new paths

for girls and young women in Gaza.”

Yosra Albakkar is from Amman, Jordan, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology at the Faculty of Applied Medical Science, Jordan University of Science and Technology. She also earned a graduate diploma in Environmental Studies at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Israel and is currently enrolled at Trent University.

“I have always dreamed of being a leader in my community and of helping others find their way to live the life they deserve. It is so hard for women in my country to prove themselves because of gender inequality. But I believe in success and I believe in myself as a strong woman who can succeed and bring change to my society.”

DFL FELLOWSHIP RECIPIENTS

Asmaa Abumuamar is a student in the Faculty of Medicine at Al Azhar University in Gaza. Asmaa worked at the Khan Younis UNRWA Clinic and volunteered her services for a number of projects including the Kids Cancer Project, Breast Cancer Awareness and First Aid Services. Asmaa plans to complete her postgraduate studies in Public Health.

Deema El Sousi is a student in the Faculty of Business Administration at Al Azhar University in Gaza. Deema’s interest in global health issues results from her volunteer activities with Mercy Corps. She participated as a youth leader in their emergency relief efforts in Gaza to help communities recover and build resilience for future challenges.

Majd Al Wahaidi is a student in the Faculty of Business Administration at Al Azhar University in Gaza. The daughter of a practicing family doctor in Gaza, Majd volunteers her services for a number of community-based medical clinics in Gaza, where she observed first hand the link between water pollution and the deterioration of public health.

Saja Abu Sultan is a student in the Faculty of Dentistry at Al Azhar University in Gaza. Saja volunteers her time in a number of schools in Gaza where she coordinates oral health awareness programs. For Saja, poverty is a risk factor related to nutrition, water, sanitation, and a healthy immune system that has a demonstrably negative impact on oral health.

DFL Awards recipients Razan Alqasim, Aisha Alsmadiand and Doaa Faraward.

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, MD, MPH

Izzeldin Abuelaish, often referred to as “the Gaza Doctor” in the media, is a Palestinian medical doctor and infertility specialist who has dedicated his life to peace in the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Born and raised in the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, Dr. Abuelaish has overcome many personal hardships, including poverty and violence, to become one of the most outspoken, prominent and beloved educators and public speakers on peace and development in the Middle East. His personal doctrine is that hate is not a response to war. Rather, open communication, understanding and compassion are the tools to bridge the divide between Israeli and Palestinian interests.

“All can live in harmony,” he says. “And all can reach their full potential spiritually, emotionally, physically and intellectually.”

Dr. Abuelaish received his elementary, preparatory and secondary educations in the refugee camp school system in Jabalia, Gaza. As a child and as an adult, he and his family endured the dismal and severely impoverished conditions of the refugee camp, as well as the constant humiliation and inhumanity of the siege and its associated checkpoints and travel restrictions.

At all times, Dr. Abuelaish strived to maintain a balanced and positive perspective toward his experiences and the Israeli people, knowing that the latter are not representative of the sentiments that fuel one of the world’s longest conflicts and the conflict that threatens overall world security.

Dr. Abuelaish, who has worked in Israeli hospitals caring for patients and delivering babies of both Palestinian and Israeli descent, has always said that all people, regardless of their religious and political beliefs, are equal, deserve access to quality education and health care, and should have every opportunity to lead fulfilling and rewarding lives.

From a young age, Dr. Abuelaish set his sights on becoming a doctor and studied hard to achieve his dream, despite having to work outside his profession to support both himself and his family. He eventually garnered a scholarship to attend medical school at the University of Cairo. Following this, he obtained a diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia in collaboration with the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of London.

He later completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Saroka Hospital in Israel, followed by further study in fetal medicine and genetics at V. Buzzi Hospital in Milan, Italy and Erasme Hospital in Brussels, Belgium. He then went on to earn his Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Policy and Management at Harvard University.

Dr. Abuelaish was the first Palestinian doctor to receive a staff position at an Israeli hospital. For many years, he worked as a senior researcher at the Gertner Institute in Sheba hospital in Israel.

On January 16, 2009, tragedy struck when an Israeli tank shelled his home in Gaza and killed three of his daughters, Bessan, 20, Mayar, 15 and Aya, 13, and his niece Noor, 17. This hearbreaking loss came only four months after losing his wife to cancer. Rather than retreat into despair, he deepened his resolve to become a beacon of hope for peace and reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis. In 2010 his memoir I Shall Not Hate: a Gaza Doctor’s Journey became an instant best seller and has been translated into 16 languages. He has travelled all over the world with his message of peace through non-violence and is a nominee for the 2013 Nobel

Peace Prize for the third consecutive year.

Dr. Abuelaish has won many awards, including the 2009 recipient of the Stavros Niarchos Prize for Survivorship, the 2009 Search for Common Ground Award, the 2009 Middle East Institute Award, the 2010 Uncommon Courage Award from the Centre for Ethnic, Racial and Religious Understanding at Queen’s College (New York), and the 2010 Mahatma Gandhi Peace Award of Canada. He has also been named one of the 500 Most Influential Muslims in 2009 and again in 2010 by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan. He was one of the three finalists for the 2009 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought.

He has received honorary degrees from Queen’s University, the University of Manitoba and the University of Western Ontario, and was recently appointed to the Order of Ontario, the province’s highest honour.

Currently, Dr. Abuelaish is an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto, Canada. He is teaching three courses in public health: Women’s Health in Countries of Conflict, Health as an Engine for the Journey to Peace, and International Perspectives on Health Services Management. These courses center on understanding the underpinnings of social and political conflict, and providing tangible and pragmatic ways to promote health as a strategy to building peace.

Dr. Abuelaish is the Founder and President of the Daughters for Life Foundation, a Canadian charity that provides awards and scholarships to young women in the Middle East in memory of his slain daughters. His aim in establishing the Foundation was to give other young women the opportunity to fulfill his daughters’ dreams for an educated future as agents of change in the journey towards peace.

OUR YOUNGEST SPONSORS

The colourful self-portraits on sale tonight come all the way from Lebanon. They are creations of Palestinian children enrolled at kindergartens run by the non-profit Ghassan Kanafani

Cultural Foundation in refugee camps that have existed in Lebanon since 1948.

The portraits reveal feelings and expressions not normally seen in pre-school art. The children live within stressed communities where dreams are in limbo and the future is questionable. The generous contribution of their precious, original self-portraits make our little artists among our biggest sponsors this evening. Thank you, children!
