This was a prestigious event attended by Scaw’s senior management team. A total of 104 frame and bol- ster packages were ordered from Scaw for this project. They will be completed by December 2009. (The frame and bolster are the main structural elements support- ing the locomotive.) NEW CLASS 39-200 SERIES Originally it was intended to rebuild one hundred Class 34-600 and 34-800 locos as a Class 39. Although the project was a success technically for Transnet, apparently the costs incurred were somewhat higher than anticipated. Accordingly, after completing only five of these units, it was decided to end the series. A second series of locomotives was introduced to supersede the original Class 39. Scaw South Africa closed its Wheel plant at its Union Junction operation in February 2009 due to the economic downturn. At that stage, a total of 189 employees were redeployed to other sections of the Cast Products division. After lengthy and fruitful negotiations between the executive management teams at Scaw and Transnet Rail Engineering, it was decided to reopen the Wheel plant. The Wheel plant started production at the end of June at a rate of 2 000 wheels per month with a reduced employee complement. At full capacity it is possible for the Wheel plant to produce 55 000 wheels per annum. In its twelfth year, the Africa Rail and Harbour Expo focused on Investment and development opportunities for operators, developers, government and investors.

Page 5: ScawJunction...Moly-Cop Canada provided the forum for Dr. Jaime Sepulveda to present a short course on Moly-Cop Tools at the Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops on May 6, 7 and

8.

Saved from the fire

Arequipa and Lima strengthening bonds Above left and left: Employees and theirfamilies gathered for training programmes.Above: Mr and MrsLa Serna from theLima operationenjoying a joint training session.

Moly-Cop Adesur (in Arequipa and Lima, Perú) has introduced a training programme for the families of employees aimed at bringing about positive changes within the family and the community. The main objectives of the programme are to:

Strengthen values, principles and ethics. Promote a vision of improved parenting and an understanding of the benefits of positive family-worker-company interrelations, and how these influence decision-making processes. Motivate individuals toparticipate in their communities and deal with current and potential community problems, in particular, those generated by poverty and poor education.

n and George submit-a copy of the Christmas65 Scaw Review (the wquivalent of ScawJunction) and said: n“Do you recognise the picture on the front cover?” It is of the ad-ministration officesat Union Junction, before the second storey was added.

otograph was taken shortly after the Plane tree inen was planted. Now, 44 years later, that small sap-ng branches that fill the horseshoe space between

the wings of the building (centre photograph). In the same way that the tree has undergone tremendous growth, so too has the Scaw Metals Group.

The name Scaw comes from the acronym of the original name of the business: Steel Ceilings andAluminium Works Limited. Original, pressed, steelceiling moulds are still on view at Union Junction (see photograph below). Manoel Santiago was the original founder member. He was joined by Maurice Smollen and together they formed a limit-ed liability company in downtown Johannesburg in 1922. Smollen was MD and Santiago was director of Technical departments. The business moved to the Union Junction site in Germiston in 1939.

Scaw no longer makes steel ceilings and its business dealings extend far beyond the SouthAfrican borders. Today Scaw is an internationalgroup manufacturing a wide range of value added steel products for industries that are key to the global economy.

Animals were amongst the victims of the fires that sweptthrough Victoria, Australia, inFebruary. Lily, a baby Western Red Kangaroo, was orphaned bythe fires. She was rescued andplaced in one of eight humidicribs bought for infant marsupials with a small portion of the fundsdonated by Scaw to its Australian operations to help rebuild commu-nities devastated by the natural disaster

It takes place between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in South Africa every year. Of theScaw runners, six were ladies – a first for Scaw. “Our ath-letes made us proud by bringing home 49 medals: Seven silvers, 33 bronzes and nine Bill Rowans. Congratulations to Moses Mahlangu and Joseph Mokoena who have now completed more than 20 Comrades Marathons”, saysNelson Buthelezi, chairperson of the Scaw Running Cluband former winner of the Two Oceans Marathon.

Welcome to your new feature,Blast from the Past, which will

lish historical artifacts and nts as and when you, the employee, submit them to Scaw Junction. In other words, the existence of this feature will be dependent on factual andshed employee contributions, which we look forward to receiving at [email protected]. The idea for Blast from the Past came from Johan Burger, rations manager, Union Junction. He and his colleague, George Carter (who has been with the company for 39 years), have made this, the first, contri-on to the new feature.

Here’s something new: Blast from the Past

Centre: Dave Whittle (right) has been the chairman of the JupiterSquash Club since 1981 when the courts were built. With him is Mike Haylett, a non-Scaw visitor who has been playing squash at Scaw since the early eighties.Left: Comrades runners. From left, standing: Solly Marule, Simon Malindi, Jason Oliver and Abraham Dlamini.Front: Moses Mahlangu and Nelson Buthelezi.
