Rabbi Tracy Nathan was a Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Intern 2001-02 with Rabbi Ayelet S. Cohen. Rabbi Nathan is the Senior Educator and Director of Melton at the Center for Jewish Learning (CJL) of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis. She develops and consults on adult learning courses, workshops, and programs and teaches throughout the greater St. Louis Jewish community. She served as a pulpit rabbi at Temple Beth Israel in Waltham, MA and at Congregation Beth Sholom in San Francisco, CA. She also held the position of community chaplain with Jewish Family & Children's Service; and taught at the Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School. She was the editor of Keshet's Marriage Project, an online resource guide for Jewish weddings for LGBTQ couples, and facilitated interfaith programming and dialogue through Tufts
University and the National Conference of Community and Justice. She was ordained through the Jewish Theological Seminary and studied Folklore and Folklife and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a Master of Arts degree. She lives with her spouse, Rabbi Scott Slarskey; their 8th grader, Hanan; and their puppy, Arlo, in St. Louis, MO.
COMPOSER FEATURE
Born in Detroit in 1945, Dennis Arlan Hirschbein (pseud: Dennis Arlan) was an accomplished singer, pianist, composer, and choirmaster. He completed his Master of Music Degree in Composition at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1967, including his dissertation: “Beowolf: an epic cantata.” For the next 10 years, he performed as pianist for several prestigious companies. During this period, he continued to write music, including several children’s operas. Arlan served as Cantor for the High Holy Days at Hebrew Tabernacle Congregation and was a cantorial student at HUC-JIR when he passed away in 1979 at the age of 33.

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors,
bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings
of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us to channel our anger, So that it motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear,
knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them.
Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty, To not take for granted the freedoms won
in generations past or in recent days. To heal and nourish our democracy,
that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream; it need not fear drought when it comes, its leaves are always green (Jeremiah 17:8).
Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts,
but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to
speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country
share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws.
May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.
May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism,

German-Austrian Synagogue Music Shabbat -- Commemorating 80th Anniversary of Kristallnacht Friday, November 9, at 6:30pm, Wine Family Sanctuary, 130 West 30th Street Kristallnacht (Night of the Broken Glass) was a horrific pogrom against Jews that took place throughout Germany and Austria on November 9 through 10, 1938. The name refers to the shards of broken glass that blanketed the streets after Jewish-owned stores, buildings, and synagogues had their windows smashed, and were set on fire. These dark and frightening days marked the transformation of Nazi Germany from words of hatred to acts of murder and destruction. We at CBST mark these days of unfathomable destruction by celebrating the glorious musical heritage of the German synagogue. Our Shabbat service will incorporate musical settings written by Germany and Austria's greatest synagogue composers such as Lewandowski, Sulzer, Schalit, Kirschner, and Weill. The CBST Chorus under the direction of Joyce Rosenzweig, Cantor Steve Zeidenberg and Guest Pianist Beth Robin will bring to life many examples of this rich tradition, which continues to this day to be some of the most gorgeous and profound synagogue music ever written.

Psalms/Tehillim Project Has Begun—You Can Still Participate In Judaism, it is traditional to recite Psalms/Tehillim in times of fear, in times of mourning, calamity, and in joy and celebration. This project responds to the moment in history in which we find ourselves. As a congregation, we will recite the entire book of 150 Psalms each day with each person taking on the responsibility of one Psalm. We began our community-wide recitation on Rosh Hodesh Elul. The Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Internship Program
The Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Internship Program was established in 1994 by a gift by William Fern (renewed in 2000) in honor of fellow long-time CBST members and gay activists Irving Cooperberg, z”l and Louis Rittmaster. By the 1990s, gay synagogues and havurot were an established—if sometimes controversial—feature of the American Jewish landscape. Out gay Jews were officially welcomed—albeit still with some reservations—by the Reform, Reconstructionist, and Conservative movements. But there was there was still no gay-oriented rabbinical training, and out rabbis were still relatively rare—gay synagogues were hiring heterosexual as well as gay and lesbian rabbis. The result was a daunting “on the job training” that was often difficult for the rabbis as well as their gay congregants, all the more so in the face of the acute and unique demands for pastoral care resulting from the AIDS epidemic in the gay community. In 1994, a gift by William Fern (renewed in 2000) in honor of fellow long-time CBST members and gay activists Irving Cooperberg, z’’l, and Louis Rittmaster enabled CBST to establish the first rabbinical internships at a gay synagogue. Now in its twenty-fourth year, the CBST Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Internship program brings two students to CBST each academic year. They work directly under the supervision of Rabbi Kleinbaum and Rabbi Rapport, supporting CBST’s diverse minyanim, leading services, preparing drashot (sermons), teaching in CBST’s Lehrhaus Judaica adult education program and Limmud B’Shabbat children’s education program, providing pastoral counseling to CBST’s members, and generally assisting with the operation of the synagogue. Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Interns are selected without regard to gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, or movement affiliation (CBST itself is unaffiliated), and have included gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and heterosexual men and women rabbinical students, ranging in age from mid-twenties to mid-forties, from all varieties of Jewish background—a diversity comparable to the diversity of CBST itself. Upon ordination, they carry their unique—and intense!—CBST experience to their work as congregational rabbis, chaplains, counselors, and community and social activists throughout the United States. The Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Internships have also been highly successful in terms of the contributions made by the interns to the life of the synagogue, the impact of the experience on the interns’ careers, and the number—thirty-five to date—of rabbis which the program has delivered to the Jewish community who are able to deal positively with the needs of gay congregants and who have experienced the potential of the liberal synagogue to be a dynamic center of an intensely Jewish way of life.

Following the concert, we will hear from guest speaker Tanya L. Domi, a 15-year US Army veteran and nationally recognized LGBT civil rights activist who worked for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force during the campaign to lift the military ban in the early 1990s. “As an LGBT person we are confronted with lots of identities. For me, I am gay, I am Albanian-American, a veteran, all these different things. It depends how you’re talking about it but with public policy or even if there’s an action, it depends who is at the table, who is making decisions, how are you making decisions, what does the process look like, how do you come to a conclusion.
