Plan to visit our interesting museums and historic sites. Mount Oval (built in 1832), located south of Circleville, is recognized for its unique architecture among early Ohio homes, and is now open for tours. It will remain a working farm and be used for agricultural education.

AshvilleLocated nine miles north of Circleville, this quaint village is located on land once occupied by the Mound Builders and later by Shawnee Indians. In the 1830s, Richard Stage started a distillery. The first railroad was completed in 1875. The Village of Ashville was incorporated in 1882 and currently has a population of approximately 3,174.

CirclevilleCircleville was unique among early American towns, built to conform to circular prehistoric earthworks. When Pickaway County was formed in 1810, the new town was laid out within the ancient Circle on the high bank east of the Scioto River. Its streets radiated from an octagonal courthouse in the center of the Circle. In 1838, a group of businessmen began to “square the Circle,” and over the next 20 years all traces of the ancient earthworks disappeared.

Commercial PointThis village was settled in 1841 as Genoa. In 1843, the nearby town of Rome united with Genoa and in 1872 became known as Commercial Point.

DarbyvilleAt one time, the Shawnee Indians had several villages and a large burial ground in the vicinity. Darby Creek, which flows along the village, is now designated as a National and State Scenic River.

HarrisburgLocated on the edge of northern Pickaway County and southern Franklin County, this small village was founded in 1836 by Joseph Chenowith. Prior to the laying out of the village, the area was known as Darby Cross Roads.

New HollandLocated on the Pickaway-Fayette County line, the town was settled in 1818 as Flemingsburg. The name was changed to New Holland and incorporated in 1835.

OrientEstablished as a station on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, this Village is located in the northwestern part of Pickaway County. It is home to the Pickaway Correctional Institution and the Correctional Reception Center.

South BloomfieldOriginally a stagecoach stop on the Columbus-Chillicothe line, the town was laid out in 1804 with the hope that it might become the county seat; however the founders’ dreams were never realized.

TarltonProbably the first settlement in Pickaway County, Tarlton was settled in 1801 as Newellstown. It is thought that the community was later named for British Cavalry Commander Sir Banastre Tarleton.

WilliamsportLocated nine miles west of Circleville on US-22, the village was settled in 1818. It was noted for many years as a health spa because of the mineral spring, which was thought to have medicinal value.

The Communities of Pickaway CountyRich in history, Pickaway County was the home of the prehistoric Mound Builders

several thousand years before the later arrival of the Indian tribes and European settlers. Pickaway County was created by an Act of the General Assembly of Ohio on March 1, 1810.

Ohio’s Small Town Museum

This one-of-a-kind museum, nationally-recognized on Oprah and in the New York Times, was expanded and remodeled in

2008. Experience unique displays from the world’s smallest rooster to the Ohio-born munchkin. Its most notable feature is the

Pickaway County Courthouse

Building of the courthouse, located at the corner of Court and Franklin streets, was

begun in the fall of 1845. It was enlarged by the addition of two wings in 1888 and was

Provenance: Wittch’s Candy Shop dates back to the 1830’s, when Gottlieb Frederick “G.F.” Wittich emigrated from his native Germany to Circleville. As a bookbinder, he had difficulty finding work in the Picakway County seat and decided to learn a new trade. After a few years apprenticing with a confectioner in Cincinnati, Wittich returned to Circleville, where he opened a candy shop on Main Street in 1840 and became known for making pure sugar stick candy in a variety of flavors. After G.F. Wittich passed away in 1907, his son, Edward, owned the candy shop until 1930, when he turned it over to his son, Frederick, who with his wife, Frances, introduced chocolates to Wittich’s product line. Following Frederick’s untimely death in 1947, his widow ran the business until 1979, when their son, Fred, became the Wittich family’s fourth-generation. With Fred’s passing in 2015, his wife Janet is overseeing the candy business.

Significance: After 175 years, Wittich’s Candy Shop is believed to be the nation’s oldest confectionery continuously owned and operated by one family. “I make and sell candy,” says Fred Wittich, “but I’m more of a caretaker for an inherited business.”

Currently: With help from a few employees, Fred’s wife Janet produces all of the fudge and chocolates sold at Wittich’s Candy Shop. The shop is highlighted with an authentic 1940s soda fountain where customers enjoy old time treats like brown cows and phosphates. The family still uses Fred’s great-grandfather’s recipe to create the incredibly rich chocolate sauce in the hot fudge sundaes. Although Buckeyes and vanilla peanut clusters are Wittich’s best-selling chocolates, the gift box of assorted dark and milk chocolates is also popular. For Valentine’s Day, the shop offers 25 different styles of heart-shaped boxes that hold anything from a half pound to seven pounds of chocolates. Wittich’s will fill them with whatever chocolates your sweetheart’s sweet tooth desires.

It’s a little-known fact that: Wittich’s trademark sketch of Circleville, which shows its original octagonal courthouse and ring-shaped layout, was drawn by company founder G.F. Wittich and depicts the town as it looked when he first arrived there in 1836.

One of Ashville’s treasures and sometimes its best-kept secret is the Small Town Museum located at 34 Long Street in the village.

Established in 1975 by the Ashville Area Heritage Society, the museum is packed with artifacts, documents, photos and history of Ashville and the surrounding area.

The museum is home to the first traffic light, invented by Ashville native Teddy Boor, along with many more items of broad interest with a local connection.

The Small Town Museum is hard to miss with the bright mural adorning its outer wall. The mural celebrates Ashville history

through images of its annual 4th of July parade.

The museum is free to the public and open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Tuesday through Friday year-round with volunteers at the ready to assist in your journey through time and local history. Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to noon also are available from April 1 through Oct. 31 each year.

“Is Everybody Happy?” Discover the life and legacy of entertainer Ted Lewis at the newly renovated Ted Lewis Museum. With his trademark battered top hat and clarinet, Circleville’s own Ted Lewis drew standing-room-only houses, sold millions of records, starred in every entertainment medium from Vaudeville to Television and captured the hearts of audiences for five decades. Listen to Ted’s recordings and watch historic film and television performances on brand new interactive displays.

The museum celebrates its 40th Anniversary June 9-11, 2017 with a three-day festival in “The Capital of the World,” Circleville, Ohio. Featured will be a performance by the Ted Lewis Orchestra with special guest star Cathy Basic Van (singer with Ted Lewis 1955-60), a 1900’s Band Concert in Ted Lewis Park, historical lectures, film screenings and much more!

Live Performance Posters (1936-51)Very few posters for Ted’s live appearances exist because of their fragile composition. These three examples are the only posters the museum has located after years of research. The 1951 poster was discovered in an attic wall being used as insulation.

The Slate Run Metro Park features open areas of grasslands, meadows, wetlands and forests. The 156 acre wetland wildlife refuge is easily accessible via a boardwalk and an observation deck with a spotting crane. Since opening in 2000, it has developed into one of the premiere butterfly and birding sites in Central Ohio. The Buzzard’s Roost Picnic Area has shelter seating for 200, and the Shady Grove Picnic Area has shelter seating for 80. Enjoy a picnic, walking trails, horseback riding, fishing, and a covered bridge in the park.

A.W. Marion State Park A.W. Marion State Park offers 309 acres of woodlands and water with a variety of recreational activities available year-round.

The main feature of the park is the 145-acre Hargus Lake, which allows the use of boats with electric motors as well as row boats and paddle boats available for rent.

Hunting and fishing are permitted with a valid Ohio license, and while the lake offers no swimming beach, boaters may swim off their boats in designated areas.

Hargus Lake Trail offers five miles of access to the entire shoreline of the lake, and Squawroot Trail, beginning at the campground, offers one mile of scenic terrain. Both trails are open for year-round use.

In the winter, under proper conditions, the park offers sledding, ice skating and ice fishing.

Playground equipment is available at A.W. Marion State Park and in the campground, as well as volleyball, basketball courts and horseshoe pits for campers. Games and sporting equipment is available at the camp office for use by registered campers, and lake access for dogs offers a place for pets to enjoy.

What began in 1903 as a venue for local farmers to showcase their produce has since become a world-renowned annual festival on the streets of downtown Circleville.

The Circleville Pumpkin Show, touted as “The Greatest Free Show on Earth,” kicks off the third Wednesday of October each year with the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-In, where area pumpkin growers vie for the prize of Biggest Pumpkin. Opening day also features juniors and seniors from area high schools competing for the title of Miss Pumpkin Show, an event that draws thousands to the Main Street Stage to support their favorite candidate.

Free admission, displays, events and live entertainment that Wednesday through Saturday each year blends with hundreds of vendors offering rides, food and merchandise that makes the Circleville Pumpkin Show an event like no other.

Afternoon and evening parades fill the streets each day based on different themes, from the Queens Parade to the Parade of Bands, the Baby Parade and the Pet Parade.

The Circleville-Pickaway Visitors Pavilion, hosted by the Pickaway County Visitor’s Bureau, offers a variety of information and entertainment during the Pumpkin Show. Pickaway County Fair3rd Full Week in June

The Pickaway County Fair, held annually in June, is one of the first county fairs in Ohio each season. In addition to rides, food and attractions, the week-long event focuses strongly on the junior fair members and the work they do year-round.

Members from dozens of 4-H clubs and FFA programs throughout Pickaway County converge on the fairgrounds each year with their projects for judging. Children and teens show off their special interest projects, bicycle skills and handiwork in baking and crafts, while others display their showmanship with animals they have raised and trained. Junior Fair animal projects include beef, dairy, dogs, goats, horses, llamas, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine through

contests that culminate in the Showman of Showmen competition and the livestock sale that closes down the fair.

Adults also compete at the Pickaway County Fair each year in categories ranging from flowers and grains to homemaking, crafts and fine arts.

The blend of competition, mixed with an antique tractor show, combine derby, tractor pull, truck pull and other agricultural events, make the Pickaway County Fair an experience not to be missed.

For more than a decade, Ashville Community Park has been invaded by Vikings and other historical figures for one weekend in April. Sponsored by Ashville’s own Lost Vikings Hoard, the Ashville Viking Festival has grown each year and now boasts crowds of more than 6,000 for the two-day event.

The Viking Festival offers free live entertainment and historical reenactments from the Viking area, as well as Romans, 15th century knights, 14th century German mercenaries and more. In recent years,

entertainment has included live jousting in the park.

In addition to food and merchandise vendors, artisans demonstrate authentic crafts like stone carving, blacksmithing, weaving and more.

Ashville Village Park

Though the Ashville 4th of July Celebration celebrates its 85th year in 2014, the festival has roots nearly as old as the Circleville Pumpkin Show.

A tattered brochure from the first festival found in the Ashville Small Town Museum is dated 1905, just two years after the Pumpkin Show’s first appearance in 1903. It touts activities like bicycle and foot races, tug of war and a pyrotechnic display.

The 4th of July Celebration was on hiatus for a number of years, including a period of time during World War II, but it came back strong and has been a popular annual event for decades.

The annual event, sponsored by the Ashville Community Men’s Club, begins in the days leading up to Independence Day at Ashville

Community Park and culminates in the grand parade held every year on the 4th of July.

Activities include rides and games for all ages, pageants for the Miss 4th of July Queen, Little Miss and Mister and the annual baby contest. Live music is offered throughout the festival, including the annual Ashville Idol singing contest with a $200 prize for the winner.

In addition to the patriotic pride, the celebration also is largely about fish. Men’s Club members spend days over vats of boiling oil frying up fish sandwiches “as big as your hand” available daily throughout the festival. The year 1982 still holds the record at 6,150 pounds for the most fish sold during the annual festival.

Pickaway County is home to a diverse and abundant wildlife. Hargus Lake, located at A.W. Marion State Park, covers 143 acres of water and 4.3 miles of shoreline. The Ohio & Erie Canal Access is the home to bullheads, channel catfish, bluegill, carp and bass. Deer Creek Reservoir, located in Deer Creek State Park, offers 1052 acres for fishing and 7640 acres for hunting. The sixteen hunting and fishing areas in the county

cover 10,723 acres, where hunters will find deer, turkey, squirrel and rabbits. Hunting and fishing license are available locally as well as in bait shops. Pickaway County has a chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), and useful information can be found on their web-site at www.ohionwtf.org. Another great resource is the Ohio Depart-ment of Natural Resources, and their website is www.ohiodnr.gov.

A.W. Marion State Park TrailsThe 5 mile loop Perimeter Trail at this small 309 acre scenic state park is the oldest trail in the county and has been enjoyed for a number of years. The rolling woodlands and quiet waters of Hargus Lake offer visitors a welcome escape from the rigors of everyday life.

Pickaway TrailThis trail is a “Rails to Trails” endeavor that begins at Canal Road in Circleville near the Ohio & Erie Canal. As of late 2014, the trail has been cleared to Sisk Road west of SR-104. The Pickaway Trail intersects with the Towpath Trail along the Canal.

Towpath TrailThis trail along the Ohio & Erie Canal is owned and maintained by the Pickaway County Historical Society and was used by the horses and mules towing canal boats back in the 1800’s. Along this beautiful trail is a shelter house at the Ohio & Erie Canal Park, and it connects with the recently developed Pickaway Trail.

Roundtown TrailThis new one mile paved bike and recreational trail connects the campus of Ohio Christian University with the Pickaway County YMCA and the new Circleville City Schools campus.

Mary Virginia Crites Hannan Park TrailsThis beautiful park located on the north east side of Circleville features wooded hiking trails and a paved bike trail, along with shelter houses, a high quality playground area, splash pads, bird watching stations and much more.

Deer Creek State Park TrailsLocated near Mt Sterling in the western part of Pickaway County, this outstanding 2,337 acre state park features scenic hiking trails, a mountain bike trail and a bridle trail. A collage of meadows and woodlands surround the scenic reservoir, and the resort park features a modern lodge, cottages, campground, golf course, swimming beach and boating for outdoor enthusiasts.

Stage’s Pond TrailsLocated between Circleville and Ashville just off US Rt-23, this 178 acre nature preserve has scenic trails and features a glacial kettle lake. The land is comprised of field and woodland areas with walking paths to explore the habitat.

Slate Run Metro Park TrailsLocated in northern Pickaway County on SR-674, this park offers walking and horseback riding trails, along with open areas of grasslands, meadows, wetlands and forests. The park also includes a working farm where visitors can have a hands on experience of life in the 1880s.

Calamus Swamp TrailThis beautiful and diverse 19 acre wetland area located off SR-104 offers a unique glance into the glacial past that shaped Ohio’s landscape. The trail exposes walkers to several distinct plant communities and is an ap-pealing resting spot for birds migrating through the Scioto River Corridor. The trail also connects with the Pickaway Trail near the Ohio & Eric Canal.

Martha Hitler Park TrailLocated on the site of a prehistoric Indian village, the trail on this 22 acre park borders Hominy Creek, and is located just off SR-56 east of Circleville.

Ohio & Erie Canal ParkThis 2.3 mile long section of the Ohio & Erie Canal has been restored by the Historical Society as a historical, educational and recreational park, which features a shelter house, towpath trail, and a new trail that was opened in 2009.

Clarke-May Museum The Clarke-May Museum is located in the house built by Dr. and Mrs. Edward C. Clarke during the 1840s through the early 1850s. The exhibit room contains Native American items, military uniforms, and historical women’s dresses, along with hand-tinted lithographs detailing Ohio birds. Recently the museum received items from the Rex Haecker and the Mary Virginia Hannan estates.

Pickaway County Historical and Genealogical LibraryThis library features genealogy and historical records, photos, ledgers, diaries, newspapers, and probate archives, and is one of the nicest facilities of its kind in Ohio.

Marfield BankBuildingThis historical structure is the last remaining build-ing which stood on the original circle. The bank was built in 1848 by Samuel Marfield, and was first called “The People’s Bank,” it was later called “Marfield’s Bank.” Built before the southwest quarter of the Circle was squared, the rear addi-tion still conforms to the tapering lot.

Mount OvalMount Oval is listed in the U. S. National Regis-ter of Historic Places and recognized for its unique architecture among early Ohio homes. Built in 1832 by William and Jane Boggs Renick, the name of the home stems from its construction on an oval-shaped knoll on the Pickaway Plains. The house’s floor plan bears a resemblance to Thomas Jefferson’s garden house at Monticello with a large central ballroom and three corner bedrooms. As part of the Pickaway County Historical Society, it will remain a working farm and will be used for agricultural education.
