[No. 16. mum~~~~~~~ ~~ mn um m . . _i ! . .. . . _mn OPELOUSAS: SATURDAY, : : SEPTEMBER 17, 1864. •~ The Chicago Convention has nominated Gen. Geo. B. McClellan for President, and Geo. H. Pendleton for Vice-President. The Platform of the edpvention consists in 6 resolutions. The first declares that "in the future as in the past," the Democratic party will adhere with un- swerving fidelity to the Union and the Constitution as the only solid foundation of our strength, se- enrity and happiness as a people, and will, as frame-work of the Government, conduct to the welfare and prosperity of all States, both North and South. The second resolution declares that after four years' failure to restore the Union by the experi- ment of war, humanity, liberty and the public welfare demand that immediate efforts be made for the cessation of hostilities with a view to cul- minate in aConveution of the States to the end that at the earliest practicable moment peace ma be restored on the basis of the Federal union of States. The third resolution protests against the inter- ferenceof military authority in the recent elec- tions in Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri and Dela- ware, and threatens resistance in like case at the approaching election. The fourth resolution declares in favor of State rights, and the Union;-declares the administra- tion guilty of unwarrantable assumption of ex- traordinary and dangerous power not gned by the Constitution, &c,, &c. The fifth resolution is another declam'on against the administration. The sixth is a flattering tribute paid to the soldiery of the North, &c, &e. A gentleman from Lyons ' Ferry, on the Atcha- falaya, writes here under the date of the 13th inst., that Wheeler, Forrest and Rody are at or near Murfreesboro with 12,000 cavalry, destroy- ing all the railroads in the rear of Sherman Pine Bluff has been taken by the Confrd- erates, with 2 gunboats and 7 transports. The Democrat of Alexandria has issued an extra from which we extract the following: MOBILE, Sept. 5.-A special to the Register dated Senatobia. Sept. 5th, says, Scouts report the capture of Duvall's Bluff, Ark., with two gunboats and seven transports. Grierson, with cavalry and artillery has gone across the river from Memphis. Twelve transports loaded with troops,passed down the river froaMemphis on Friday night, their supposed destination White river. The Mbetrapolitan Record, Freeman's Journal and Chicago Times are reported in Mem- phis to be suppressed. There is great rejoicing among Northern democrats at the result of the Chicago Convention. a All quiet at Mobile. -- East Pascagoula, Sept. 5.-The New Orleans Picayune of the first is received. - It says the steamer Gertrude was fired into day before yes- terday by the rebel batteries, i of a mile above Bayou Sara, twenty shots were fired, 12 took ef- fect. The ganboat Lafayette opened on the assailants and drove them off. The White Cloud, was also fired into at same time at Bayou Sara Island; one shot cut the steam pipe. Macon, La., Sept. 5.-Atlanta was evacuated by Hood at 2 o'clock on Friday evening, and occupied by the enemy at 11 o'clock. Gen. Hood blew up his extra ammunition and burned his surplus commissary's stores and drew off on the McDonough road. At one o'clock in the morning, Hood formed a junction with Hardee at Lovejoy's station, on the Macon and Western Railroad, and whole army is now concentrated at that point. Gen. Gowan and the 6th and 7th Arkansas Regiments of his Brigade weregptured. At the battle of Jonesboro on Thursday we lost six pieces of artillery and many killed and wounded. Wounded all brought to this point. While the fall of Atlanta is regretted, the peo. ple are not discouraged. Bristole. Sept. 5.-Brig. Gen. Jno. H. Morgan was killed at Greeneville yesterday; his body will reach here this evening. Petersburg, Sept 5.-Last night about eleven o'clock, the enemy opened the most furious can- nonading on the city, to which it has been ex- posed since their presence. It lasted two hours. Our batteries replied effectually. There was no loss of life or limb. and but little property. It is reported the enema are massing heavily their infantry and cavalry on our extreme right, near the Weldon road, for the purpose of breaking our lines and occupying the South side of R. R. or for another grand raid. All quiet to-day in front. The weather is tn- tensely hot. . Those who are loitering about here when tlhy owe military service are hereby forewarned to look out for squalls. The whole number of prisoners taken from McCook and Stoneman's raiders, and received at Macon, is reported by the papers of that city to be 3609.--Western paper. Died--On theB9th July last, at the residence of her husband, (Mr. John Bihm) on Bayou Walia, Mrs. MATILDA DEAN, aged 43 years. "Blessed are the dead, who die, in the Lord." -Near Opelousas, La., on the 29th of Au. gust, MOLLIE, youngest child of J. W. and C. C. McKinney, aged 18 months and 4 days. One week ago to-day we beheld, with grief and agony. the dear form of'little Mollie laid in "the church yard low." 'Twas hard to give up our darling and pet, butGod-in his wisdom, has taken the dear one from the sorrows to come. We miss her innocent, prattling tongue; we hear not the patter of her little feet at. close of even, when tired of'play, she was wont to come and put up her dear arms, begging, so innocently to be rocked to sleep. Her bnright and sparkling eyes we may never see more, yet we would not eall the blest one liab . Ere her pure,young h•rt had been stained by-the sins of earth, she was gathered safe into the Shepherd's fold. Her sweet spirit now basks in the sunlight of a Ba- tieur's love. [Hodge, late Re.presentative from the Fifth Cn-. gressional District of the State of Louisiana: And whereas, it is provided by an Act of the State Legislature entitled "An Act to provide for holding elections for Representatives in the Congress of the Confederate States in the State of Louisiana," approved June 12th, 1863. a All quiet at Mobile. --East Pascagoula, Sept. 5.-The New Orleans

Picayune of the first is received. - It says thesteamer Gertrude was fired into day before yes-terday by the rebel batteries, i of a mile aboveBayou Sara, twenty shots were fired, 12 took ef-fect. The ganboat Lafayette opened on theassailants and drove them off. The White Cloud,was also fired into at same time at Bayou SaraIsland; one shot cut the steam pipe.

Macon, La., Sept. 5.-Atlanta was evacuatedby Hood at 2 o'clock on Friday evening, andoccupied by the enemy at 11 o'clock. Gen.Hood blew up his extra ammunition and burnedhis surplus commissary's stores and drew off onthe McDonough road. At one o'clock in themorning, Hood formed a junction with Hardeeat Lovejoy's station, on the Macon and WesternRailroad, and whole army is now concentratedat that point.

Gen. Gowan and the 6th and 7th ArkansasRegiments of his Brigade weregptured.

At the battle of Jonesboro on Thursday we lostsix pieces of artillery and many killed andwounded. Wounded all brought to this point.

While the fall of Atlanta is regretted, the peo.ple are not discouraged.

Bristole. Sept. 5.-Brig. Gen. Jno. H. Morganwas killed at Greeneville yesterday; his bodywill reach here this evening.

Petersburg, Sept 5.-Last night about eleveno'clock, the enemy opened the most furious can-nonading on the city, to which it has been ex-posed since their presence. It lasted two hours.Our batteries replied effectually. There was noloss of life or limb. and but little property. Itis reported the enema are massing heavily theirinfantry and cavalry on our extreme right, nearthe Weldon road, for the purpose of breakingour lines and occupying the South side of R. R.or for another grand raid.

All quiet to-day in front. The weather is tn-tensely hot. .

Those who are loitering about here when tlhyowe military service are hereby forewarned tolook out for squalls.

The whole number of prisoners taken fromMcCook and Stoneman's raiders, and receivedat Macon, is reported by the papers of that cityto be 3609.--Western paper.
