Volume 18, Number 2

From the Manager Are you perplexed by a fog of alternate facts and fake news? I feel your pain! The good news is that your local library can help. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (aka IFLA), recently posted a timely infographic called How To Spot Fake News. This clever chart provides eight simple steps to encourage critical thinking about news such as: consider the source, check the author, read beyond the headlines and – ask a librarian. It’s available on the IFLA website at www.ifla.org/publications/node/11174. While we’re on this topic, Winnipeg Public Library recently launched PressReader, an online service with access to 6,000+ local, national, and international e-magazines and e-newspapers. Use PressReader to track breaking stories across dozens of newspapers like the Winnipeg Free Press, The Globe and Mail, the Washington Post, The Guardian, Le Monde and so on. Just drop by your local branch and ask our friendly staff to show you how or go to guides.wpl.winnipeg.ca/e/newspapers. • Ed Cuddy, Manager of Library Services

Runaway Slave Advertisements in the Maritimes Examining runaway slave advertisements in the Maritimes after the Loyalist influx gives us a window into the lives of individual slaves: who they were, where they lived, what work they did, personality traits and whether they secured freedom.
