62 6202 131 1991 Abstract: The subject of durable development is at the centre of world and regional economic preoccupations. The 1992 Brazil Earth Summit was devoted to the problems related to the environment. It emphasised the tremendous importance of durable development as vital to the increase of the average individual income and the fight against poverty and, consequently, as key to the effort to achieve economic welfare. Durable development, however, goes hand in hand with human development. Although the reforms introduced in recent years have enabled the Algerian economy to achieve balance, serious difficulties are still facing the national economic development strategy independent of oil, in addition to the need to improve the individual standard of living and to protect the environment.
