January 19 - Iordan ~ Йордан - 19 січняApprox. 400 students, teachers, parents and members of the general public attended Iordan celebrations. Liturgies were held in all 3 churches, followed by processions to the Ice Cross, for the Great Blessing of Waters. After the bleesing, everyone had a chance to drink some of the holy water and take some home to keep for the year. Following the Water Blessing, horse drawn sleigh rides were available.

Traditional kutia, pampusky, borshch

and pyrohy were available for lunch.

donating the wheat for the kutia!

At the end of this day, the didukh that was brought into the home on Sviat Vechir by the head of the household, was brought out to be burned.

The UCHV Research Program is seeking information and artifacts related to the Hewko residence and farm (located SE ¼ 16-53-17-W4).

The Hewko house constructed in 1919 has been donated to the UCHV. It represents the transition from traditional Ukrainian to more modern Canadian styles of architecture and living. The museum is especially interested in artifacts dating from the 1920s.

The Village has identified and located actual buildings vital to the portayal of life in the 1900s, most of them have been moved to the Village site, awaiting restoration.

Researchers have been working consistantly in research-ing the building, land structure and interviewing one of the most important resources - people who can still recall and describe life in those buildings in the 1920s.

Restorations have the daunting task of using the researched information, and restore the buildings back to the 1920s, and move them onto the historic side.

Artifacts need to be collected and catalogued, and in some case reproduced, so that they can be displayed and used by the interpreters for the benefit of explaining our history and culture.

From building identification to the move to research to restorations to furnishings to interpretation is many steps, many months (sometimes years), many people and dis-iplines, not to mention (of course - all this also involves) alot of dollars.

While progress has been slow, we are making progress. In November 2009, the restored Grekul granary was moved onto its new location onto the Bukovynian farmstead, the Grekul barn is now in the process of being restored this year.

We look forward to more buildings being restored, moved and furnished . .

The Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project (AUGP) is expand-ing opportunities for Albertans interested in exploring their past. It has just established cooperative working relationships with the:• Restoring Family Links Program of the Canadian Red Cross Society (Province of Alberta), and the• Heritage Cemeteries Ad Hoc Committee of the United Church of Canada (Alberta and Northwest Conference).

The Red Cross Restoring Family Links (RFL) Programs helps Canadians to re-establish contact with immediate fam-ily members after separation due to war, internal conflict, or other humanitarian crisis. Individuals in other coun-tries can also place inqui-ries through their local Red Cross agency to find rela-tives in Canada. This new association between the RFL Program and the AUGP will provide Albertans and other stakeholders of the AUPG an additional avenue for re-establishing contact with family in Ukraine. It can also assist people in Ukraine in learning about relatives who immigrated to Canada at the beginning of the twentieth century.

As part of a new affiliation with the United Church of Canada, the AUGP will commence documenting United Church of Canada properties located in Smoky Lake County this summer. “We all share a common concern that the earliest pioneer churches properties scattered across the prairies are increasingly becoming threatened landmarks,” says Radomir Bilash, AUGP Project Manager, “and we feel our systematic ap-proach to record and photograph church properties can be employed by any church denomination wishing to document and preserve its community, family history.”

On Sunday, March 21, 2010, the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society held its AGM at the Chateau Louis Conference Centre. In attendance were the Minister of Infrastructure, the Honourable Ray Danyluk (MLA, Lac LaBiche-St. Paul), the Minister of Employment & Immigration, the Honourable Thomas Lukaszuk (MLA, Edmonton-Castle Downs), MLA Doug Elniski (Edmonton - Calder) and MLA Genia Leskiw (Bonnyville - Cold Lake). Also in attendance were 120 Friends members, who reviewed the business of the Society of the past year, and the financial statements for 2009. They were also had an overview of the Village’s activities, the Society’s 25 years of achieve-ments and a Question and Answer session with the present MLAs. It was a most informative afternoon.

Working at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village last summer, I got questioned a lot –“why did you come out from Ontario?”.

No one really seemed to believe that a summer job working in a muse-um was sufficient reason, but for me it is. I love history, I always have, which is why I studied it at school. The Village presented me with a unique opportunity to view people quite literally interacting with the past and it was not a chance I could pass up.

It has been a great experience for me - a chance to aid others in un-derstanding the past. When I have traveled to historic sites in other

parts of the globe, the thing that always impressed me was the sense of learning history as a living thing. It is this feeling that the Village relays, perhaps better than anywhere else I’ve ever been!

I travelled to Lviv, Ukraine, in late September of 2009, which turned out to be a picturesque time of year. Not only were the leaves beginning to fall, shiny brown chestnuts were plummet-ing to the cobble stone streets where they burst from green spiky hulls upon impact. One such street leads past Lychakiv Cemetery, where Ivan Franko is buried, and continues on a rising slope to Lviv’s Museum of Folk Architecture and Customs. This skansen is also known as Shevchenkivskyi Hai, and is nes-tled in the Shevchenko Forest in northeast Lviv.

The opportunity to explore this largest open-air skansen in western Ukraine allowed for the admiration of rolling land-scapes, historic buildings and cultural artifacts. It was also a chance to compare the UCHV to a site of a similar nature in the ancestral country of Canada’s Ukrainians.

From a Canadian perspective, the admission fee was minimal – at the time, less than $5 CAN. Upon entry through the front gate, an initial impression of splendor was created by the tower-ing trees that surround the historic buildings. The museum was busy with visitors of all ages on a sunshiny Sunday afternoon.

The roadways that lead past the yards are comprised of gravel or dirt, which contributes to the atmosphere of the grounds by main-taining an authentic appearance. However, the paths that are worn into yards are those of visitors and not in-terpreters, whereas the UCHV staff tries to recreate signs of functioning environ-ments. Some yards at Shevchenkivskyi Hai are enhanced with vegetable gardens, tasteful decorative flowers and kalyna bushes.

The historic buildings on display are generally older than those at the UCHV (the oldest dates to 1749); however, there are simi-lar patterns between the construction styles and building mate-rials of structures at both sites. Most of the houses resemble the pioneer homes from East central Alberta that are interpreted at the Ukrainian Village, having thatched roofs, hewn log walls and clay plaster finishes. Я подорожув до Львова в кінці вересня 2009 року, що виявилося дуже мальовничою порою року. Не лише почало осипатись листя, але й блискучі смагляві каштани, опадаючи, вдарялись об бруківку вулиць, вилущуючись зі своїх зелених шкаралуп. Одна з таких вулиць проходить повз Личаківський цвинтар, де похований Іван Франко, і простягається до Львівського Музею народної архітектури та побуту. Цей скансен також знаний під назвою “Шевченківський гай”. Він розташований в парку “Знесіння” в північно-східній частині Львова.

Знайомство з найбільшим скансеном у західній Україні дало змогу насолодитися мальовничими ландшафтами, історичними будівлями, культурно-мистецькими експонатами, а також порівняти Українське Село з цим подібним за характером музеєм на історичній батьківщині канадських українців.

З канадської точки зору, ціна за вхідний квиток була мінімальною – менш, ніж 5 канадських доларів. Після входу

через ворота музею, перше враження величі творять високі дерева, які оточують історичні будівлі. Сонячної недільної обідньої пори музей був наповнений в і д в і д у в а ч а м и різного віку.

Доріжки, які простеляються повз двори, прокладені з гравію та грунту, що додає враження а в т е н т и ч н о с т і до загальної атмосфери. Проте, стежки у самих дворах втоптані відвідувачами, а не е к с к у р с о в о д а м и ,

на відміну від Українського Села, працівники якого намагаються надати йому ознак функціонуючого середовища. Живого звучання додають деяким обійстям Шевченківського гаю городи, зі смаком вирощені квіти і кущі калини.

Експоновані в Шевченківському гаї історичні будівлі зазвичай є старшими від споруд Українського Села (найдавніша споруда датується 1749 роком). Проте, можна простежити подібності в стилях будівництва і в будівельних


economy, materials and manpower at a site of this size must be difficult to afford.

There is a sign at the entrance of each main historic building that indicates its type, year of construction and place of origin. While useful as a quick reference, these were sometimes a little distracting. Viewing these buildings without such intrusions might provide a more authentic atmosphere to the site.

Unfortunately, unlike the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village with its unhindered displays, many interior rooms at Shevchen-kivskyi Hai can only be viewed from a building’s roped-off main doorway. Details were sometimes obscured in the typical tra-ditional darkness. On the other hand, fresh flowers, gourds and kalyna were incorporated into the décor of the houses, adher-ing to seasonal routines while providing a colorful, fragrant at-mosphere.

A museum staff-person sits near the entrance of each building, providing basic information about the structure and its history when asked. Some of them sometimes allow photographs; one such employee even offered to photograph visitors pre-tending to do chores in the building.

Barns and granaries at the museum are closed for viewing. In fact, few animals or grain fields were noticeable at this site. If farm implements were present, they may have been stored inside outbuildings; yards were generally barren of such large artifacts.

Shevchenkivskyi Hai made the effort to design its modern facilities with a folk architecture appearance. Other modern-

Солом’яними дахами та деревяними стінами, поштукатуреними глиною, більшість хатів львівського скансену нагадують піонерські доми центрально-східної Альберти, представлені в Українському Селі. Містові, яке перебуває в умовах економічної кризи, мабуть, нелегко спромогтися на матеріали і робочу силу для такого великого музею.

При вході до кожної історичної будівлі розміщена таблиця, де вказано тип, рік будівництва і місце походження споруди. В той час, як такі таблиці є зручними носіями базової інформації, вони можуть дещо відволікати увагу. Споглядання будівель без подібних “втручань” могло б надати музею більш автентичної атмосфери.

На жаль, на відміну від Українського Села з постійно відкритими експозиціями, багато інтер’єрів хатів Шевченківського гаю можна було побачити лише через перегороджені двері. Деталі ледь проглядались в типовій традиційній темноті. З іншого боку, свіжі квіти, гарбузи і калина були використані в декорування інтер’єрів, відображаючи сезонну рутину і творячи колоритну живу атмосферу.

Біля входу до кожного будинку сидить працівник чи працівниця музею, подаючи, коли їх запитують, базову інформацію про структуру й історію споруди. Деякі з працівників інколи дозволялють фотографувати; один навіть запропонував відвідувачам сфотографуватися, імітуючи хатню роботу.

Стайні і стодоли переважно зачинені для огляду. Власне, в цьому музеї можна помітити мало і зернових полів. Сільськогосподарська техніка, якщо є в наявності, ймовірно, зберігається всередині сільськогосподарських будівель. В дворах таких великих експонатів не спостерігалося.

Шевченківський гай доклав зусиль, щоб поєднати модерні об’єкти з народною архітектурою. Сучасні програми музею також залучають музикантів. Під час мого перебування музиканти виконували живу музику на великих просторих галявинах на території музею, приймаючи пожертви і продаючи свої записи. На одній з таких галявин, публіку розважав юнацький танцювальний ансамбль в українських

костюмах. Це було високого рівня видовище, яке дарувало справжню насолоду.

Після проведення і с т о р и ч н о г о дослідження шкіл тя вчительських помешкань першопоселенців для Українського Села, для мене особливо яскравим моментом були відвідини Бусовиської школи, збудованої в 1880 році. Особливо корисним було зблизька оглянути цю школу і порівняти її з вчительськм житлом школи в Саус Рівер, яка очікує своєї реставрації в Українському Селі. Мені навіть пощастило

порозглядати декілька її кімнат і зафотографувати їх (як зазначено вище, відвідувачів часто допускають лише до дверей, які були перегороджені латaми).

Мій час перебування в школі був обмежений, оскільки працівник музею зачинив її о 17:00 годині. Цікаво було спостерігати за реакцією відвідувачів, які проявляли великий інтерес до цієї школи, будучи особливо подивованими тим фактом, що вчитель проживав у цьому ж приміщенні. Ентузіазм відвідувачів підняв мені настрій і додав надії на те, що Українське Село невдовзі збагатиться новими архітектурно-історичними надбаннями.

Подорож загалом вдалася, і ознайомлення з красивими історичними хатами, школою і церквами з різних регіонів України було справді вартісним. Система громадського транспорту Львова сприяє легкому доступу до Шевченківського гаю, і робить музей провідним туристичним пунктом. Гмм, цікаво, чи Українське Село також вже набуло статусу провідного туристичного пункту для відвідувачів Едмонтону?

day enhancements to the site included musicians who played live music along the roadways or in large open grounds, accepting dona-tions and selling CDs of their music. In one of the large open spaces, a youth dance club dressed in Ukrainian costume performed for the masses. The entertainment was of a high quality, well presented and brought much joy to the crowd.

Having undertaken histori-cal research on schools and teachers’ shacks for the Vil-lage, a particular highlight for me was seeing the school from the village of Busovys-ko, constructed in 1880. It was especially rewarding to exam-ine the building first-hand and compare it to the South River School teacher’s residence that is awaiting restoration at the UCHV, instead of only seeing drawings of Busovysko School and reading descriptions of it in books. I was even lucky enough to be able to explore its several rooms and photograph their con-tents (remember, normally visitors are allowed no further than the doorway - which is blocked of with lath boards).

My time in the school was cut short because the staff person responsible for the school closed it at 5 PM. It was interesting to observe how interested visitors were in the school and es-pecially their reactions to the fact that that the teacher lived in the school building. The visitors’ enthusiasm made me excited about the future sites that Enrichment Program will provide to patrons of the Ukrainian Village.

The visit was indeed enjoyable, and it was worthwhile to ob-serve the beautiful folk homes, school and churches from dif-ferent regions of western Ukraine. Lviv’s public transit to and from the facility makes Shevchenkivskyi Hai easily accessible and a must see if one travels to the city. Hmm, I wonder if the Ukrainian Village has also become “a place that one must see” if one travels to Edmonton?

IS YOUR FAMILY CELEBRATING 100 YEARS IN EAST CENTRAL ALBERTA IN 2010?

The Centenary Pioneer Recognition Program honours all pioneer families, Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian alike, who immigrated to east central Alberta between the years 1891 and 1914. Those families who are eligible under this program are recognized with a Centenary Pioneer Recognition Certificate, presented on Ukrainian Day in August. This year we are accepting applica-tions for immigrants who settled in east central Alberta in 1910 or earlier.

Recipients of the Centenary Pioneer Recognition Certificate must submit a completed application form to the Centenary Program office by June 30th, 2010. Early submissions are encouraged to allow for adequate review of an anticipated higher number of applications for this summer’s celebrations.

Explore Ukrainian wedding traditions in four different settings and time frames – from traditional village set-tings in Ukraine to the way these traditions have been continued in Canada. Highlights include video clips from several weddings in both Canada and Ukraine, bringing together a variety of sights, sounds and movements in this unique display.

The Ukrainian Weddings exhibit is presented in cooperation with the Kule Folklore Centre.

Throughout the months of July and August, the Friends of the Ukrainian Village offer week-long day camps for children and youth.

The Historic Children’s Program is for children aged 6 to 12 years of age, and the Junior Interpretive Program is geared for the 12+ age group. These interactive programs allow young people the unique opportunity to ex-perience what pioneer life in the Ukrainian bloc settlement of east central Alberta was like during the 1920s.

Over the course of a week, the child will get to wear an au-thentic costume and experience a child’s life in the 1920s – without radio, TV, videos, electronic games, etc… They will have the possibility to use their imaginations and creativity while taking part in a variety of historic activities on the farmsteads, in the townsite, in the one-room schoolhouse, in the kitchens and surrounding fields.

Proudly offered by the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society, these unique and interactive week-long day camps are offered weekly in July and August. This year’s dates are as follows (including statutory holidays): Week 1: July 5 - 9 Week 5: August 2 - 6 Week 2: July 12 - 16 Week 6: August 9 - 13 Week 3: July 19 - 23 Week 7: August 16 - 20 Week 4: July 26 - 30 **Week 8: August 23 - 27

Transportation from Edmonton for weeks 1 to 7 is provided from these four locations: - Old St. Stephen’s College, 8820-112 Street - North Town Mall - Flying J Sherwood Park on Hwy 16 East - Clark’s Esso on Hwy 16 and RR 223

** Transportation for week 8 is provided from: Homesteader Hotel Vegreville, Lamont Elementary School and Mundare Arena.

Register today! The registration fee is only $180 per week. A special rate of $170 if offered for multi-child household or for current members of the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society. A confirmation package will be mailed upon receipt of registration.

Впродовж липня і серпня, Приятелі Українського Села пропонують тижневі табори для дітей та юнацтва.

Дитяча історична програма розрахована на дітей віком від 6 до 12 років, а юнацька екскурсоводна програма спрямовама на вікову категорію від 12 років. Ці інтерактивні програми дають молодим людям унікальну нагоду відчути, яким було життя в українському поселенні в східно-центральній Альберті впродовж 1920-их років.

Впродовж тижня дитина носитиме автентичний одяг і ознайомиться з дитячим життям 1920-их років – без радіо, телебачення, відео, електронних ігор, тощо...Вони матимуть можливість використовувати свою уяву і творчий потенціал підчас занурення в історичне життя на фермах, в містечках, в однокімнатній школі, в кухні і на оточуючих полях.

Молодь в ролі екскурсоводів (теж в автентичних костюмах) матиме можливість відтворити життя піонерської молоді, приймаючи участь в захоплюючиx та інтерактивних заходах, результатом чого стане набуття унікального навчального досвіду.

Donation Grant Program• The Community Spirit Program Donation Grant provides an opportunity for non-profit and charitable organizations such as ours to receive a grant based on the total eligible cash donations we receive from individual Albertans over a 12-month period.

• We can apply to the program once we demonstrate we have received the minimum total of $1,000 in eligible cash donations from individual Albertans. The maximum grant available is $25,000 per year, or $50,000 over three years.

• Based on what we have received and the available program funding, the provincial government will issue a grant that we can use to help support our operations, programs or capital projects.

As a registerd charity, the Friends are involved in a number of activities solely for the enhancement of the Village.

The Friends Society directly administers a great number of services that visitors experience, in-cluding gift shop, food services, Historic Children’s Program, Junior Interpretive Program, interpretive staff, admission gate staff, costuming staff, and construction/restoration staff.

The Friends are also working actively on the completion of the Village site.

While we recieve some government funding and grants, this year, these have been reduced.

This year, more than ever, we need your help in ful-filling our mandates and projects.
