On the way, visit the Kawisari coffee plantation. Jeeps are required to access the plantation. It is one of the largest and oldest coffee plantations on the island. The Dutch colonial Government built it in 1870 on the slopes of Mount Kelud. It stretches over rolling green hills and valleys, waterfalls and rivers. The sites have been converted into a heritage museum, and are well visited by Indonesians from all over the country, especially high school students. Items commemorating Soekarno’s place in Indonesian history are displayed.

In the later afternoon check-in at the small boutique hotel Tugu Blitar. Tonight, dinner will be served at Penataran Temple on the lower slopes of Mount Kelud. The 12th century Hindu temple was built during the era of the Majapahit Kingdom and serves as a beautiful backdrop for a dinner.

After breakfast at the hotel, get ready for a visit to the Sultan’s Palace, also known as Kraton, for an introduction to Java’s remarkable heritage. Explore the building, which is still used as the residence of the Sultan, and learn how its architectural style reflects the traditions of Javanese cosmology. Then step inside to see the incredible collection of cultural relics such as puppets and other handicrafts. Continue on foot to Taman Sari, a royal complex dating back more than 200 years. Learn about the Sultan who built this leafy compound and hear how it was used by his harem.

The next visit on this cultural discovery tour of Jogjakarta is Batik workshop, experience the making batik prints, an Indonesia’s most famous traditional craft. Learn the ancient techniques used by the craftsmen then work alongside of them to create a personalized design from scratch. This handmade creation is the perfect souvenir and a long-lasting memory of this insightful Java day tour.

Lunch is served in combination with a short inspection at one of Jogjakarta’s most convenient hotels.

In the afternoon, continue to UNESCO-Heritage Prambanan temples. Explore the Prambanan’s collection of 9th-century temples. The guide will explain the symbolism and history of the jagged temples and their inner shrines.

Return to the city and get fresh, before heading to a street food adventure utilizing different means of transportation. At night time, many of Jogjakarta’s local people go for a glass of kopi joss on the street. A piece of blazing charcoal is dropped into the coffee producing a sizzling sound which leads to the name “joss.” More than just a great drink, joss is an experience. Enjoy this unique beverage as locals do while bumping shoulders with them. A short stroll away is bustling Malioboro Street. Visit a street vendor selling delicious Pempek fish cakes there since 1984. Served with spicy and sour tamarind sauce, it makes a great appetiser and is best enjoyed with Indonesia’s unofficial national drink, Teh Botol. The next stop, the popular Bakmi “Kadin”, a noodle shop named after the Indonesian Chamber or Industry of Commerce simply because it is located by the office building. Move through the South-Square of the Sultan’s Palace to Alun-alun Kidul Field with its sacred twin Banyan. Locals gather here to ride on carts decorated with colourful lamps. Try to walk in a straight line between the two Banyan trees with blindfolded eyes: local legend says a wish will come true! The journey continues to a so-called Pendopo, a semi-open royal house that turns into a food venue at night. Both sweet and savoury coconut and palm sugar treats are here in abundance.

Although known as the Chicken Church, it is actually neither a chicken nor a church. Bukit Rhema is in fact the form of dove-shaped. It is also not a church but a house of prayer, where peoples of different nationalities and faiths could pray together in one place and flocking to feather the nest of world peace. Afterwards, continue to the small town of Magelang in order to visit the small OHD Museum for contemporary art, one of the best collections in the country which was put together by Magelang resident Dr. Oei.

(1,435 mm) gauge locomotives from Kedungjati to the northeast and the 3-feet 6-in (1,067 mm) gauge line onward towards Jogjakarta via Magelang to the south, it is still visible that the two sides of the station were built to accommodate different size trains. The museum features 21 steam locomotives, of which four are operational. Other collections include old telephones, Morse telegraphs, bells and signals equipment, and some antique furniture. There will be an opportunity to experience a ride one of the historic steam trains.

Following the train ride, continue to the MesaStila plantation and wellness resort in Losari. It is truly another gem in the Jungles of Java.
