Sub Theme/8: Benefits Of A Life That Pleases God.Topic: Delivered, Celebrated And Promoted.Text: Daniel 3:16-30.Aims: i) To realise that God rewards absolute faith in,

and loyalty to, Him;ii) To strive to please God so as to be rewarded

thus.

Introduction: The dangerous decision of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (The Three Hebrews) to defy the king’s command to bow down to his brazen idol was not out of a carnal desire to become famous. It was based on their conviction that only Jehovah deserves their worship, and; they were ready to die for it. That pleased God and evoked His intervention. God’s intervention overawed Nebuchadnezzar and caused him to acknowledge the God of Israel. The Three Hebrews became heroes and were exalted above their peers as we find similarly in I Sam.2:30; Psa.91:14.

Study Guide1. What do you think was the strong motivation for the

extremely dangerous choice of the Three Hebrews? Dan. 3: 16-18; Cf. Heb.11:24-27.

2. The Three Hebrews believed in the power of God to deliver as well as His sovereign will to let them die in that fire. What lesson is there for us in our walk with God?

3. What can we learn from the effect of their deliverance on King Nebuchadnezzar? Dan. 3: 24-30.

4. Read Dan. 3:30 again.a. Does enduring persecution necessarily lead to divine

blessing? Matt. 19:29; 2 Tim. 2:12; 1 Pet. 5: 10; Rev.2: 10.

b. If they had died in the fire, do you think it would have affected the Almightiness of God adversely? Cf. Acts 7:58 and 8:1-3 with 22:20; Mark 15:39.

Conclusion: The true Christian spirit recognizes the sovereignty of God and would not readily sell out even at the greatest threat to one’s life, welfare or wellbeing. Those who choose to suffer with Him, He honours. The three Hebrew youths understood this, decided to go with God, and have thus left us a very significant example as follows.

Food For Thought: The greater the risk, the greater the glory.

Memory Verse: Dan. 3: 17, 18.

CHRISTMAS CAROL 23RD DECEMBER

Oh, that the Lord would guide my ways

1. Oh, that the Lord would guide my ways,To keep His statutes still!Oh, that my God would grant me peaceTo know and do His will!

2. Order my footsteps by Thy word,And make my heart sincere;Let sin have no dominion, Lord,But keep my conscience clear.

3. Assist my soul, too apt to stray,A stricter watch to keep; And, should I e’er forget Thy way,Restore Thy wandering sheep.

4. Make me to walk in Thy commands;‘Tis a delightful road;Nor let my lips, or heart, or handsOffend against my God.

MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Text: Matt. 1:21 – She will give birth to a Son, and you shall give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.

CHRISTMAS is a major Christian festival; Christmas is the most recent in origin. The name, contraction of the term “Christ’s Mass,” – (Celebration) did not come into use until the Middle Ages. In the early centuries Christians were much more likely to celebrate the day of a person’s death than the person’s birthday. Very early in its history the church had an annual observance of the death of Christ and also honoured many of the early martyrs on the day of their death. Before the fourth century, churches in the East – Egypt, Asia Minor, and Antioch – observed Epiphany, the manifestation of God to the world, celebrating Christ’s baptism, His birth, and the visit of the magi.

In the early part of the fourth century, Christians in Rome began to celebrate the birth of Christ. The practice spread widely and rapidly, so the most parts of Christian world observed the new festival by the end of the century. In the fourth century the controversy over the nature of Christ, whether He was truly God or a created being, led to an increased emphasis on the doctrine of the incarnation, the affirmation that

“the Word became flesh” (John 1:14 HCSB). It is likely that the urgency to proclaim the incarnation was an important factor in the spread of the celebration of Christmas.

No evidence remains about the exact date of the birth of Christ. The December 25 date was chosen as much for practical reasons as for theological ones. Throughout the Roman Empire, various festivals were held in conjunction with the winter solstice. In Rome,

the Feast of the Unconquerable Sun celebration the beginning of the return of the sun. When Christianity became the religion of the Empire, the church either had to suppress the festivals or transform them. The winter solstice seemed an appropriate time to celebrate Christ’s birth. Thus, the festival of the sun became a festival of the Son, the Light of the world. Jn. 12:14 – “I have come into the world as a light”, Jn. 8:12 – I am the light of the world.

Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew word yeshua – “Meaning the Lord saves” (Jos. 1:1) this text describes the futuristic task of Mary’s son and further highlight SIN as the greatest enemy of mankind, Howbeit Through the Atoning death of Jesus Christ and the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, those who …… to Jesus will be set free from the guilt and slavery of sin. Jn 8:31, Acts 26:18.

Have you accept this Jesus as Lord and Saviour? Decide today. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

C.E.O. Your Friend & Vicar.
