“The Bionic Woman”

By George DickieBrittany Forgler is the type of young

woman who’s everybody’s friend —funny, outgoing and with a love of a goodtime. Then wake-up call comes.

As played by Jillian Bell (“Worka-holics,” “22 Jump Street”) in the Amazonoriginal comedy movie “Brittany Runs aMarathon,” premiering Friday, Aug. 23,she’s a 27-year-old New Yorker whosehard-partying ways, chronic underem-ployment and toxic relationships are be-ginning to catch up with her. When shevisits the doctor to get a prescription forAdderall, the orders come back veryclear: You need to shape up.

Too broke to join a gym, she doesn’tknow what to do next. But when herseemingly together neighbor Catherine(Michaela Watkins, “Casual”) encouragesher to try running, she finds she likes it.As her endurance and performance im-proves, she sets herself a lofty goal: tocompete in the New York City Marathon.

“I think we’ve all gone through stageslike Brittany goes through at the begin-ning of the film,” Bell explains, “wherewe all feel sort of stuck or repeating badpatterns and she decides that she wants to

‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ and discoversherself in Amazon comedy movie

Jillian Bell stars in “Brittany Runs aMarathon,” premiering Friday onAmazon.

do something for herself to change herlife and then that’s why she sets the goalof running the New York City Marathon. And it’s based on a real person. When Iread it, I was sort of blown away ... .There were a lot of lines in the scriptwhen I said, ‘Oh, I’ve said that before’ outloud to myself or one of my best friends. So I just really related to the character.”

To get into the character’s head space,Bell underwent something of a transfor-mation herself. Not only did she have todon multiple prosthetics to depict Brit-tany’s various stages of weight loss, butthe 35-year-old actress also took up run-ning and shed significant weight.

“I thought I would either spiral out or itwould be therapeutic,” Bell says, “and Ithink it did a little bit of both but in a goodway. I got to know myself a little bit bet-ter after doing this film. I definitelyworked the hardest I ever have, at leastphysically, on any project. They didn’task me to lose weight but I lost 40 poundsfor the role just because it was part of herreal journey and I wanted to see if itwould help connect me to the script moreemotionally because honestly there aresome parts of the script where I said, ‘Oh,why is she struggling right here?’ And itwas because at this point, you’veplateaued and it was something Iwouldn’t have known if I hadn’t experi-enced it.”

A GREAT VETERANRecently, Bayonne lost Louis Giovanni, Sr., one of our great

community activists, who passed away at age 88. I grew upwith his children, so I have known the family for a long time.Countless Bayonne residents will remember seeing Lou at 22ndStreet and Broadway, where he stood at every Christmas seasonfor years to collect contributions for the Toys for Tots campaign.I can still picture him there by a truck in front of Irwin’s store.Representing the Marine Corps League, Lou worked hard toensure that underprivileged children would have presents atChristmas. He had a great generosity of spirit and a strong lovefor America and our community. That is why it was a pleasureto honor him as Bayonne’s Senior Citizen of the Year in 2016.Lou was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania in 1931. His family

moved to Bayonne in 1941. He joined Company B (also calledBaker Company) of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in 1949.His unit met at Bayonne’s U.S. Naval Supply Depot, which be-came the Military Ocean Terminal. When the Korean War brokeout in 1950, Lou’s unit was activated. He was sent into combatwith almost no training. Lou fought in the Battle of the ChosinReservoir, where U.S. Marines Communist Chinese troops intemperatures that reached 40 degrees below zero. After he ex-

perienced those temperatures, it must havebeen easy for Lou to stand outside in Bayonnewinters for the Toys for Tots campaigns. Forhis efforts in Korea, Lou received the PurpleHeart, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Ko-rean President Unit Citation, the Combat Ac-tion Ribbon, the Korean Service Medal, theNational Defense Medal, and the United Na-tions Medal. In the decades that followed the Korean War,

Lou was an active volunteer and member of several veterans’groups and civic organizations. He was an officer of the MarineCorps League, the Disabled American Veterans, the Veteransof Foreign Wars, the Korean War Veterans Association of Hud-son County, and the Catholic War Veterans. He was a LifeMember of the American Legion. Lou remembered his fellowveterans at many grave decorating ceremonies for the BayonneMemorial Day Parade Committee. I will remember Lou for his great humor and his ability to

make people laugh and smile. Bayonne will miss his generos-ity, enthusiasm, and civic activism. I would like to extend mycondolences to the Giovanni family.

Disney Plus streaming service) — thespirited “Terms of Endearment” Oscarwinner, stage veteran and best-selling au-thor gets a 24-hour salute Saturday, Aug.24, as part of TCM’s traditional monththat puts a spotlight on one performer’swork each day.

“I love working,” MacLaine maintains.“I love the crew, I love the environment, Ilove pretending to be these other people.”With that said, though, the actress doesn‘trefute the notion that she can have highexpectations of co-workers: “Being fromthe dance world, you have to, or you’ll gethurt,” she reasons. “I think I’m irascibleabout efficiency with others.”

Professing that she doesn’t know “whatacting is all about,” MacLaine reflects, “Iam not one of these deep Robert De Nirokinds of actors, or that great actor who justretired ... Daniel Day-Lewis. I don’t getinto it like he does, nowhere near that. That’s why it was fascinating for me towork with Meryl (Streep, whose motherMacLaine played in ‘Postcards From theEdge’), because she does that. She adoresthat kind of replacement of her conscious-ness.”

Though the MacLaine tribute has a verynoticeable omission — the Oscar-winning1960 comedy-drama “The Apartment,”which TCM shows fairly frequently —the day’s lineup still offers plenty of prime

for MacLaine and Michael Caine caststhem as a showgirl and a cat burglar whocombine their respective talents to com-mit an art heist.

“Steel Magnolias” (1989): Hardly get-ting lost amid a strong ensemble of ac-tresses, MacLaine teams with Sally Field,Dolly Parton and then-novice JuliaRoberts (among others) in the film ofRobert Harling’s play.

“Sweet Charity” (1969): MacLaine as-sumed Gwen Verdon’s Broadway role asa taxi dancer in director and choreogra-pher Bob Fosse’s screen version, of hisstage hit, notable for its extensive loca-tion filming around New York.

“Terms of Endearment” (1983): Mem-orably declaring that “I deserve this!”upon receiving an Academy Award for it,MacLaine found one of her signatureroles in Aurora Greenway, whose love forher daughter (Debra Winger) was just aspowerful as the dysfunction in their rela-tionship.

“Two for the Seesaw” (1962): An attor-ney with marital problems (RobertMitchum) relocates to New York andstarts a relationship with a dancer(MacLaine) in this bleak but effectiveadaptation of a play by William Gibson.
